All over So Cal

This weekend Kyle and I visited my G-ma in Newport Beach, went to a friend’s baby shower in Fullerton, attended a wedding in Temecula, and stayed with Kyle’s parents in San Clemente.  If you do the math, that’s over 300 miles of driving (6+ hours!!!).

Check out how fun this looks.

Just our luck – gas prices reached $5.50 per gallon this weekend!  Isn’t that fabulous?  Of course record breaking fuel prices would coincide with such a jam packed weekend on the road.

Anyway.  Sarcasm aside, it was pretty awesome to see so many family members and friends.

After working Wednesday and Thursday last week, I had big time errands to accomplish on Friday since we were leaving after Kyle got home from work.  But then I woke up feeling like hell (this is probably [definitely] TMI, but I’ve been dealing with mega constipation as this baby gets bigger and bigger).

My former (first trimester) trick of eating melon and drinking lots of water has been failing me now that I’m in the later stages of the second trimester.  I ate half this cantaloupe and then threw up.  Lovely.

I waited a while before attempting some toast with Earth Balance.  Since I managed to keep it down I then decided to go for a walk (to get Kyle’s dry cleaning and do a few other random tasks in Santa Monica).

IMG_5572

My view from above.

I got hungry and faint on the walk and swooped into WF for a veggie juice.

IMG_5577

Life saver.

The rest of the day included more boring stuff, like packing, wrapping presents, cleaning, etc.

IMG_5578

This monster salad was both lunch and dinner.  It had two kinds of tofu and a bunch of other veggies and quinoa and stuff.

IMG_5553

I had a kur organic brownie in between meals.  More on these superfoods later.

The rest of the weekend was a blur of fun.  I have random pics that are mostly non-food…

IMG_5587

Rise and shine – breakfast of eggs, Ezekiel english muffin and lots of daiya on top.  I woke up (without an alarm) at 6:45 am.  Not exactly the relaxing weekend game plan I was hoping for but oh well.  I made sure to get out of bed noisily so Kyle wouldn’t be too far behind me.  I’m really sweet like that.

After food we were off to Newport to show off my bump and see my g-ma, cousins, aunts, uncles, mom & dad, sister and the kiddos.

IMG_5596

Look at this face!!!  Does it get any cuter?

IMG_1404 IMG_0863 IMG_0926 IMG_1032 IMG_0901

Since we had a shower to get to in Fullerton, we had to peace out early.  Off to Native Foods for lunch!

IMG_5582 IMG_5584

Scorpion burger for Kyle, sesame kale & tempeh macro bowl for me.

By the time we got to Fullerton, I was ready for a nap, but I rallied because I’m a champ (who doesn’t like missing parties).  Plus, the baby shower wasn’t exclusively women, so I got to see lots of our friends.

The boys chugged beer from baby bottles and tried rocking their own balloon “bumps”.

IMG_1409

And before I knew it, we had to ditch the party early (again) to drive to the wedding.

Kyle changed into his suit before we left, but I was indecisive in choosing my outfit, so I wound up doing a car change on the freeway (not easy or fun).  Then I fell asleep on the commute to Temecula.  Stellar co-pilot, huh.

IMG_5586

The wedding was at a winery.  All those grapes and not a drop of wine for me. 🙁

IMG_0968

The couple is basically your modern day Barbie & Ken – not kidding.  Almost as gorgeous was the orange-pink sunset.

IMG_0976

Photo op.

My mom and sister got to feel some kicking.

IMG_0982

Dinner was okay.  The vegetarian option was a stack of grilled veggies – kinda boring, but at least it was vegan.  Kyle wasn’t into it, so he had another dinner when we got back to San Clemente at 11:30 pm.

IMG_5588

Sunday’s breakfast was the same as Saturday’s.

IMG_5590

I made a Mexican salad for lunch with greens, tomato, salsa, avocado, daiya “cheese”, beans, and hummus.

IMG_5591

And later in the afternoon, we had some home-made vegan ice cream.

IMG_5593 IMG_5592

Just two ingredients – canned coconut and sugar.  Easy peasy!  Topped with shredded coconut.

We lounged around watching football until reality set in, and we reluctantly said goodbye to my in-laws.  Back to Santa Monica to get ready for the work week – grocery shopping, laundry, and lunch prep, oh my!

    1) Your bump is adorable. Seriously. You are too freaking cute, and I don’t throw that word around.
    2) While I try and avoid processed foods, I do enjoy Daiya. I just wish it had more protein, but whatever.

  2. Lee

Gas was $5.50?! It’s like $3.50, maybe $3.75 here! I have similar stomach issues as you do (though not as severe) and am trying to eliminate lactose. It’s hard though. Do you grow to like the Daiya? I think it takes funky.

I know how you feel 🙂 As a vegan I wasn’t expecting to battle with constipation, but guess what 🙂 How sad for you that the wedding was at a winery. That must have sucked just a tiny little bit. Very jealous that your Mom and Sis could feel the little one kicking. I’ve got an anterior placenta, so even though I can feel him, it is nowhere near what I would call a kick and nobody else is able to feel it. Enjoy it Elise!

omg you were really all over socal! Haha love the map, NOT the gas prices! Glad you got to see lots of friends and family though!

  5. Anne-A.

Wow ! Your nails are wonderful ! I wish I could do the same by myself. =)

  6. Chelsie @ Balance, Not Scale

I can’t believe you summarized such a full and busy weekend so succinctly! I love seeing such big smiles so early in the morning — it totally set my day off right — so thank you!!
I’m definitely going to be attempting your breakfast plate — right along my skill level and totally yummy-looking!!

  7. Alexis @ Hummusapien

That looks like the most beautiful place to have a wedding! I can’t get over that sunset–I thought it was fake at first! I love Kyle’s balloon bump. Oh and your rainbow nails are pretty awesome, too 🙂

  8. Sarah

Until I read the last comment, I was going to say- how can nobody have mentioned your nails yet!!? You can’t show us them in a photo and not give us details. I do glitter nails a lot, and have done one color of the rainbow on each finger, but how did you do that on the same finger? Looking good, Elise! (Your nails and the rest of you!)

I love your nails!!! Did you do it yourself or get it done??

  10. Jenn (eating bender)

What an adventure! Sounds like a fun weekend minus the, uh, constipation. 😉 Hope it gets better soon but in the meantime, focus on the fact that you are just too cute with your bump and your nails look awesome! Oh, and I totally would have been lamenting the winery, too.

  11. Lou

The constipation sucks. I feel your pain. I was on iron supplements while pregnant as WELL so yesh, I was waaaay backed up (TMI!!) I find psyllium husks really really helpful (and super gentle on the tummy) – good to add a few teaspoons to smoothies or sprinkle on morning oats.

i know what you mean. the rest of the fam put faux meat and made burritos (kyles parents have been doing vegan for a month), but i figured id go a more whole foods route. daiya doesnt count 😉

oh and thanks for the bump love.

  13. Elise (Post author)

yeah, its seriously insane. record breaking is not working for my wallet right now. its supposed to go down later in the week. fingers crossed.

as for the daiya, its hard to say because id been dairy free for so long when i first tried daiya, i couldnt even remember what real cheese tasted like. id only had various soy cheeses, which have nothing on daiya. in my opinion. so maybe if you dont like it, its just not your thing?

  14. Elise (Post author)

at least you get the pleasure of those nice little kicks. i think theyre awesome.

  15. Elise (Post author)

ok so a coworker did them. it took her 5 minutes. seriously. so impressive. she cut out part of a spongey material and painted it with three colors and just punched it across my nails. boom boom boom boom…
i put tape on either side so it wouldnt get all over my fingers, and just q-tipped the errors away with remover later.
it looks like way more than three colors because of how she stamped it a few times on each nail.
    try it!

  16. Elise (Post author)

my coworker did it. read my response to the comment above.

Not sure how oats fit into your fodmap eating but when I was pregnant I would make overnight oats with prunes and it really helped!

  19. Mae

yes you do have a very cute baby bump. how far are you along again?
I’ve been looking at Paleo/Primal and Low Fodmap Diets because of my poor guts. not sure what’s wrong yet cause i have no insurance so the docs called it IBS and i think it’s something more. I even lost a job because of my guts issues. no idea why i’m sharing this. i’m sorry
By the way..how did you get your nails like that!? they are georgous!!!

  20. Jessie

Are are gorgeous hunnie! Loving your little bump. Sorry you had to say goodbye to all your family memebers, but I’m so glad you were able to visit & see so many of them 🙂

  21. Sara @ sarasmiles

Aw Elise you look beautiful! I can imagine it might get frustrating not knowing what will make you feel better, but props for you for grabbing the good stuff!
