Be-UDI-ful Bagels

In case you were unaware, I don’t post all my eats.  There are several reasons for this, but that’s neither here nor there.

My point is, had I posted photos of every bite, you would have seen the slow and steady demise of my multi-nut butter.  I’m making it again asap because I have been a nutbutter-a-holic lately.

Another confession, I threw away half a tub of spinach today.  It was all watery and gross.  I can’t recall the last time I had plain veggies, let alone a salad.  And that’s just plain bizarre (and sad).

Don’t start crying for me yet, though, I have been on the receiving end of some pretty fabulous products.

Udi’s gluten free foods sent me a bunch of their goods to review, and I was happy to step up to the plate.  Taste tester extraordinaire reporting for duty!

I first heard about Udi’s gluten free foods when I did a google search of West Coast based health food companies (don’t even bother asking why I was looking that up…).

Bagels are the newest addition to their product line, so I was excited to get my hands on some.  They are gluten free as well as dairy free, and the ingredient list is both short and full of recognizable items.  No mysterious “natural flavors” or the likes.  That’s a good solid start.

Since I had put the whole bag in the freezer upon arrival, I had to thaw the bagel before toasting it.  It was pre-cut, and split apart with ease after a quick 30 seconds in the micro.

First thing I noticed was how good they smelled.  Yum.  They reminded me of an an eggy kind of bread.  Like the thick bread you use to make French toast.

I decided to go basic with my first bagel…PB&J…with a brand new jar of organic smooth peanut butter.  I told you I’ve been in a crazy nut butter mood.

Strawberry preserves and silky peanut butter, straight up.

Be-Udi-ful.

It was pretty different than what I was expecting.  Not in a good or bad way, just different.  Udi’s plain gluten free bagel had a more bread-like consistency.  On the inside, they reminded me of a sourdough roll, while the outside had a pizza crust kind of texture.

Flavor-wise they were great – surprisingly hearty, despite not being too dense.  They weren’t all fluff, though, because the outer crusty portion satisfied my desire for thick carby oomph.

Previously, I dabbled in the gluten free world (back when I was trying to sort out my GI issues).  I never noticed a change in my digestion one way or the other, but for those who do have gluten intolerances, I definitely think these plain bagels are a tasty alternative.

I can’t wait to try these again…I’m already brainstorming more ways to enjoy them.  Whether or not you’re intolerant or allergic to gluten, these are worth trying out.

Ever heard of Udi’s gluten free foods?   What’s your favorite bagel topping or ingredient?

*Udi’s sent me these products to review free of charge.  My review is my 100% honest opinion.  I don’t receive any compensation for my review, just the free product.

I love pb & j on my bagels, or at least some kind of nut butter and jelly! i am also a big fan of tofutti cream cheese with jam.

Yeah, those bagels definitely look more bread-y than bagel-y. Which is fine and all, but I guess if your were craving the thick dough of a bagel it wouldn’t do the trick!

I’ve never had those bagels, but I love the carby donuts in general. My parents always say they’re too dense, but I mean…how can you ever have too many carbs?!

Sourdough + pizza crust? Sounds like my idea of bread heaven.

I was excited to try Udi’s prodcuts, but every one I found contains eggs. Boo. I could only find one gluten-free bread company that was vegan, actually, and it was only ok.

I love a toasted bagel, melted butter, sliced tomato… oh YUM…

I have heard of UDI’s – I have not tried them yet, but after this review I want to!! It LOOKS like normal bread! 😀

i haven’t looked at the ingredients on the bagels but the list of ingredients on their bread was pretty long. i brought udi’s bread home and fed it to my husband. we then went back to buying millet bread by food for life.

for the gluten-free folks, amy’s has created a tasty pizza–rice crust, soy cheese 🙂 it was darn good (and i am not gluten-free)

I have been searching out gluten-free breads to suggest to a friend who has GI issues and is not supposed to eat gluten, I think I am going to pick up a bag of these for her since they look so fluffy!

    Thanks for the review!
