Day to night

I had an awkward transition mid-week from a normal routine to a night shift routine.  The first day is always awkward.  I woke up at 7:30 and tried to go back to sleep but wasn’t successful in the least.  At 8 I gave up and showered.

And breakfasted.  With toast and eggs x2.  And iced tea with almond milk.  It seems to be my summer breakfast of choice.

Before yoga I had a banana.  And then I got zen.  Ommmmm.

As per usual, I went to the WF across the street afterwards.

Juice!  I can’t stop.  I need to bulk buy for our own juicer so this doesn’t continue.  This was another kale, carrots, apple & ginger combo.

By the time I walked home it was 2:30 and I needed food.

Snack plate.  Steamed sweet potato, fried eggs, carrots, Sabra Southwest garden hummus and BBQ sauce.

Honestly, the first time I tried this flavor I wasn’t a big fan.  I actually let Kyle dominate it.  All to himself.  What was I thinking???  In the words of Julia Roberts “big mistake, big, HUGE.”

I tried it again this week and cursed my stupidity.  It has a strong black bean flavor that’s phenomenal.  Plus it goes perfectly with my all time favorite duo (hummus & sweet potato, obviously).

Kyle’s not touching this tub, even if I have to hide it in the fridge to make sure of it.

At this point I had to make Kyle dinner and get my shiz squared away before heading to work.

I tried really hard to nap, but ended up just lying in bed from 3 to 4.  Since I haven’t been riding my bike to night shift lately, I have to leave far earlier than I used to in order to avoid traffic.

My new plan (with Kyle’s permission) is to treat myself to dinner at Whole Foods while I pass the hour(s) before I start my shift.

Just me, my Kindle, and my delicious already prepared veggie eats.  Bliss.

IMG_4113

Lemon Herb Tofu.  More greasy than I was expecting, but good nonetheless.  I added soy sauce because the flavoring didn’t really penetrate the tofu (it was really dense!).

Vegetarian Chow Mein.  Just as greasy as I was expecting (read: hoping).

I didn’t finish either of these, so I had seconds and thirds over the course of the night.  I brought snacks too though.

This is actually the exact same ensemble I packed for the next night too.

Anyway, I managed to hold my eyes open really well.  Usually after my “lunch” break (during which I sleep on and off) I am kinda groggy and it takes me a while to wake back up.  But I came back to a mess so I was immediately wide awake, getting blood cultures, doing EKGs, etc.

Around 5 am things slowed back down and my yawning rate increased like whoa.  Would you like me to create a chart with the inversely proportional rates of work vs. yawning?

I got home by 8 am, ate a few cookies (that’s how non-Olympians do breakfast), showered, and passed out.

Fortunately, I slept in until 1:30 pm the next day.

And then the routine continued.

These tortillas, by the way?  Awesome.  The best gluten free option I’ve tried ever.

IMG_3967

I got a bunch of Rudi’s products in the mail a while ago and immediately threw the tortillas in the freezer.  They have been chilling there (pun intended) for a long time, but I’m happy to say they didn’t lose anything texture wise in the freezing/thawing/heating process.  I’ll be buying these forever now.

IMG_4066

I had another one for dinner (or whatever meal you eat at 5 pm before work).

IMG_4067

So light and pliable!!  Like real (wheat) tortillas!!

And this soup is the same Amy’s one I had last weekend.

Golden Lentil obsession.

And with that I’m out.  Heading north for the weekend…couples baby shower getaway!

I have a really difficult time going from nights back to days… I am a natural night owl, so day shifts are a challenge. I wonder how I am going to manage when I finish shift work and do regular 8-hour days Monday to Friday!

I actually work a day shift today and couldn’t fall asleep until 0130 *sad face*. I’ll be yawning this afternoon.

  3. Alaine @ My GF & DF Living

I have been on a the search for a good gluten-free wrap! I need to try the Rudi’s! They look like you won’t fall apart on me like the others.

Oh, I’m intrigued by those tortillas, since the brown rice foods for life brands ones don’t really hold up very well! I’ll have to keep a look out for them.
Wow, I can’t imagine how hard that new routine would be, it must get your body all sorts of confused.

I love those tortillas too–SO much more flexible and tasty than any other gluten-free wraps I’ve tried.

lol to your yawning chart. I’m definitely gonna have to look for that hummus and soup for that matter! I may or may not be skilled at hoarding/hiding my favorite foods (ie: raspberries because my dad is a berry whore! haha sorry if that was too much. Those are actually my mom’s words if you believe me)

  17. Tt in nyc

Ahk! I just had to comment back to you- i’m in nyc too and organic ave is draining my bank account!! Their kale salad must have crack in there… And the “latte” with nut milk, and that gazpacho….
