Hands down

My favorite season of all, is FALL.  I just love it.  I get so excited when I feel the weather changing.  Is there anything better?

1. The sports: Fantasy football and actual football (sadly I still get my hopes up for the Bruins and the 49ers year after yearโ€ฆ)

2. The weather: crisp without the MAJOR brrr of winter (perfect running conditions)

3. The holidays: Halloween AND my birthday ๐Ÿ˜€

4. The veggies: time to clean the cobwebs pots and pans out of the oven (woohoo for seasonal squash)

Speaking of seasonal cookingโ€ฆI ADORE my new cookbook, Clean Food by Terry Walters because of the way itโ€™s divided.  So clever.  All through summer I was eyeing the โ€œautumnโ€ section, just waiting for the stores to start stocking all the delish ingredients.

YEAAAAAH!

IMG_4446

(L to R) Parsnips, crimini mushrooms, rutabaga, purple turnip, brussel sprouts, yams, carrots.  AMOR.

And just to prove itโ€™s not $$$ when you shop in season, hereโ€™s part of my bill.

IMG_4447

(family size) spinach $2.99

(horse) carrots $0.86

(the biggest ever) yams $4.82

(baby) carrots $1.49

turnip & rutabaga $2.06  *the checker didnโ€™t know the difference so theyโ€™re represented together on the bill

brussels $1.44

parsnips $1.75

mushrooms $1.24

Considering I bought the HUGEST tubers I could find, this wasnโ€™t too shabby, huh?  Whatโ€™s more, I used less than half of these purchases for dinner, and even after Kyle and I each had seconds, there were still leftovers.  Talk about stretching your dollar.

Food prep.  So pretty I had to take a picture.

IMG_4451

I wanted nothing more than a heaping plate of veggies for dinner.

IMG_4452

Even though I have NO QUALMS with having a truck-load of veggies as my entire course, I did have a hankering for some nooch, too.  So I recreated my cheese sauce from a few days ago, and drizzled it all over.

Per-fec-tion.

Fall! Pumpkin season ๐Ÿ˜€ When’s your birthday? That cookbook sounds great- I wonder if there is a UK equivalent. ‘In season’ stuff is different here. Ie, potatoes all year round ๐Ÿ˜›

(why is my name coming up different?!)

  2. Courtney

I LOVE fall! But I am totally bummed right now…it is in the 80s and humid out! What?! It is September in MN, people! WHAT is going on?! I want my crisp cool fall temps and weather! I want to go to an apple orchard and pick apples and NOT be a gross sweaty mess (umm…too late! I did that this morning and it just felt WRONG to be apple picking in 85 degree heat). I love fall for the changing colors, the cooler temps, the produce…everything! My birthday is in the fall too ๐Ÿ™‚ When is yours?

    Courtney

re your name – i thought YOU changed how it appeared in wordpress or something?!? i dont know.

potatoes might get old, sweet potatoes, not so much.

  4. elise

  5. Graze With Me

Fall is ok, it’s just so darn short and before you know it it’s winter which I despise. Summer is my favorite, my husband and my own birthdays are June 21 and 22 and I think I just like being about to go out at night without a coat!

I do love fall fruits/veggies though. Apples have never tasted so good…

  6. The Foodie Diaries

ALL FO’ FALL. I can’t wait to OD on bnut squash, pumpkin and sweet potato–and potentially turn a lovely hue of orange. At least it won’t be from fake tanning ๐Ÿ˜‰

  7. Maggie

Absolutely fall ๐Ÿ™‚ I love fall food. Apples, squash, pumpkin, Thanksgiving food… it’s wonderful.

  8. kayteesays

Fall! I love fall. It seems like summer lasts forever in Texas, but the fall feeling can last well into December here. I love the produce, and I love the sports (Go UT!), but what I love most is the weather.

  9. VeggieGirl

AUTUMN IS MY FAVORITE TOOOOOO ๐Ÿ™‚

Whens yo birthday?!?! Wait don’t tell me, I’ll just FB stalk you. I LOOOOVE FALL too it is my absolute FAV time of year! The scarfs, the plethora of Starbucks, leafs changing color, eating butternut squash like it’s my job, etc.

    XoOoOOXOOO

Fave WC season is summa for sure!! Although Christmas by the beach is not too shabby at all ๐Ÿ˜€ I love Fall over here so far, but I know I’m gonna freeze my blond booty off in like, 2 months, ahh!!

  12. julie

I’m ALL about fall in a nutshell. I do love summer but there’s just such gorgeousness that happens in the fall. not to mention gorgeousness that happens under certain helmets.

I do love spring but it doesnt come with as many quarterbacks as fall.

I detest Halloween but your birthday does make the holiday an exception

  13. Katie

Summer – I like it hot. But Fall is a VERY close second. Actually, they might be tied. A big bowl of baked veggies is my fave meal, always. It just so happens that fall is the best time to have them. ๐Ÿ™‚

  14. devan

summer. i miss my sweet fruits! watermelon. and yummies! haha and hot weather.

  15. ksgoodeats

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, FALL! I think there should just be one big fall fiesta where we all dress up in Halloween costumes, watch football, drink pumpkin beer, and eat roasted veggies with baked horse apples for dessert ๐Ÿ™‚

  16. elise

you just painted QUITE the Harry Potter picture!

  17. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga)

OMG That’s how most of my dinners start off with B.S. (not that kinda B.S., but Brussel’s Sprouts), carrots but then just greens and peppers and whatever else floats my veggie boat. Roasted fall root veggies are singlehandely The Bomb when cooked right.

We just moved from San Diego but for the last 5 yrs were part of a CSA and so whatever was growing locally and in season, made it’s way to the dinner table and I have to say that this time of year was bountiful and awesome. And yeah, you’re right when you $shop in $season you save so much $$.

I love summer though b/c of all the melons, berries, and fruit mania. But fall veggies are a close second.

    Hope you’re feelin’ bettah!!

  18. Ada

I love fall ( I’m a fall baby too, Nov.3rd!) There’s nothing like fresh picked apples and pumpkin pie:)

P.S I went to the UWS Whole Foods this morning and their nutritional yeast is restocked!

  19. Steph

Fall is my favorite too! I love the weather, the food, the color of the leaves, and the holidays!

I love coming home, throwing on sweats and a sweatshirt, cooking something warm to eat, and snuggling with my love. How can I not love fall?!?

    Your dinner looks good!!!

  20. SweetKaroline

    FALL fo sho

i’ve been driving with my window down to smell the crisp air and get a better view of the changing leaves.

    whoooohooo

  21. lilveggiepatch

I love fall, too! Mostly because my birthday is in October and Halloween lies between that and Thanksgiving. So basically I can eat whatever I want all through the season. And it’s cozy.

  22. elise

i know!! haha, i went back the next day and they were already restocked! now THATS service. (they really can do no wrong in my eyes) ๐Ÿ™‚

  23. elise

i know. i swear, if i got a snuggy, id never leave the apt between sept and jan!! (well except to restock on groceries, i guess)

  24. Gena (Choosing Raw)

What a perfect dinner!! Fall’s my fave season, too.

And good luck in the race today!!! I am cheering you on from my sickbed ๐Ÿ™

  25. Lara (Thinspired)

Those brussel sprouts look perfect! I had a bad batch recently ๐Ÿ™ Your dinner looks simply delicious ๐Ÿ™‚

My favorite season is Fall ๐Ÿ™‚ GO NINERS!

  26. elise

now, THAT is the true bummer. ugh. winter sucks. i need to move back west…

apples = best fruit. i seriously never go a day without an apple. it got so annoying taking pictures of the same dang thing each day, though, so i rarely take those pics anymore, but its my fave fruit, and im jealous of all those people who go on apple picking trips. maybe i should look into that?

i do think people have an attachment to the season their bdays are in too though…

  27. elise

easiest (and healthiest) way to get that orange glow ๐Ÿ˜‰

  28. elise

haha, i second everything EXCEPT the “go UT” ๐Ÿ™‚

my heart lies with the PAC-10

  29. elise

yeaaaaaa – get it giiiirl…those scarves will never come in handy more now that youre a legit east coaster. when exactly are you coming in november? i wanna try and stick around for atleast part of your vacay. im pretty sure hummus goes with squash like u+me (i totes know my calculus)…haha. OH, and i cant WAIT to tell you who our wedding DJ is. such a gangsta with tha beats. loves.

  30. elise

you have a serious surprise headed your way ๐Ÿ™‚ im sure youll cope far better than i did though. i STILL havent stopped whining about it!!

  31. elise

why no halloween love? i bet i could get you to like it – say if i dressed up as a certain QB?!? (and i definitely dont mean favre, haha). i dont do wranglers.

  32. elise

    twss ๐Ÿ™‚

i cant WAIT to slather roasted veggies in hummus and nooch.

  33. elise

roasted fall veggies are the things dreams are made of. im not even joking.

i just googled csas in the NYC area and there are a few good ones…mostly from upstate new york. im a big fan of buying local, and our WFs tells how far away the farms are with the produce you buy. i love it. there are tons of farmers markets in the summer time, but once the colder weather hits, it can sometimes be harder (living in such a concrete jungle). good thing we now have a brand new WFs so close by. i know they have a bad rap for being pricey, but in reality, thats just the prepared foods. the groceries are SUPER cheap if you get the 365 brand and the sale items (that or im just immune to the crazy new york inflation that exists in every other store)

  34. elise

i couldnt agree more, lord help me, if i ever got a snuggy, id hardly leave the apartment. good thing WFs delivers… ๐Ÿ˜‰

  35. elise

wow. i never really missed driving until you wrote that. it sounds beautiful.

  36. elise

i heard you were sick, too! sorry boo. i think there is a virtual cold going around…

  37. Emily

I love late summer and early fall. I would say fall is my favorite hands down, but I love oppressively hot weather too much. The transition from summer to fall is such a powerful time, I think!

Those brussels look so gorg! Veggies + noochy sauce = what else do you need?

  38. elise

ick. once last year i left the apt to go to the gym and left brussels roasting in the oven. OMG, i was mortified when i remembered and have never sprinted home so fast. i think i had a photo of them on the blog back when it happened. ever since that, im scared of roasting brussels!!

do you get american football over there??

  39. elise

ick. im not a fan of the nastay summah heat. but that between time after summer, before the rainy part of fall, thats nice and cool and crisp is divine ๐Ÿ™‚
