Maiden loaf

There’s nothing like a new food appliance to get you excited and inspired in the kitchen.

After years of ooing and aahing over home-made breads, I finally made the plunge and got what I was lusting after.

I did a fair amount of research prior to buying one.  I wanted a reliable machine, but I didn’t wanna blow my bank account on some fancy schmancy professional breadmaker.  I’m not going on Top Chef any time soon after all.

And so I settled on the Sunbeam 2 lb. Breadmaker – model 5981.

My maiden loaf was baking within hours of opening the box.  And it was the simplest thing EVER.

I didn’t even need to go to the store for ingredients, I had all (6) ingredients on hand.  Not too surprising considering it only required water, butter (Earth Balance), sugar (coconut sugar), salt, whole wheat flour, and yeast.

Voila!

Vegan whole wheat bread.

Toasted with peanut butter.  Mmmmmelty.

My first bread making experience couldn’t have been more simple.  Or more delicious.  I’m not kidding.  Any idiot could make perfect loaves of bread with this machine.  I’m in love.

Hooray!! I have the same breadmaker , but a way older model. My favorite thing about making my own bread is that glorious smell that fills the house. It’s everything I can do to resist opening the lid before it’s ready and chowing down. Glad your first loaf was a success!

One of my fav memories is my mom making cinn-raisin bread in her bread maker on the weekend! Oh those sweet smells in the house made chores that much easier!

I have ALWAYS wanted a bread maker. I remember back in 5th grade my teacher brought hers to class and made bread for everyone – the smell was amazingggg!

The smell of bread baking is seriously one of the most heavenly smells on Earth! lol. Your comment about not going on Top Chef anytime soon cracked me up. I love that show! 🙂

Yay for you! Your bread looks super yummy.

Getting new appliances is always so much fun! I just posted about mine…

Hooray! I live for baking bread in my oven during the colder months, but as soon as it warms up I break out the bread machine. Glad your first loaf was a success!

I’ve debated purchasing a bread maker, especially when I made bread a lot last winter. However, I didn’t make it at all this year and I feel like it would take up a lot of space.

Hooray! They kinda make the perfect size loaves too. We were making gluten-free bread for a long time, but now Chris is back to store bought (and then we need to freeze half the loaf or it will mold).

That looks SO good, fresh bread is amazing!

  17. Heather

I love homemade bread. Nothing better. I worry that if I get a bread maker I will only eat bread, maybe that’s not such a bad thing;)

  18. cbrady3

That sounds way more simple than all the other bread making I’ve seen on blogs. We have a maker in the back of the cabinet somewhere. Want to get it out now!

i’ve always wanted one! is it really THAT easy? can you do a step by step tutorial?

  20. Elaine

So glad you are back and in the swing of things.

I bought a bread maker years ago and I only used it once be’c the thing that kneads it left a huge whole on the bottom and in the middle. But it doesn’t look like your machine left any traces of parts!!
I’m going to have to check that out.

Oh and I never heard of coconut sugar – I’m going to have to look for that.

Glad you’re back and happy baking.

  24. elise

I just made my first loaf in my bread machine too! But mine looked like Quasimodo or something…weird looking, but still completely edible, and delish!

Just catching up on yer blog. This is great. I was just researching bread makers for hours and hours last week, and almost bought this little model but I keep overthinking it and putting off committing to a model. I needed something like this post to decide for me. I think I’ll get it now!(@&!(*&!!! I think.
