Matcha Ice Cream

This flavor is the best one yet!

I got this matcha green tea powder as a free sample from the company, Kiss Me Organics.  Truthfully, I’m not one to take up freebie offers very often (they’re not usually things I’d eat – free or not), but I was really excited about this one.  The health benefits of green tea are numerous, and matcha powder is (dare I say?) even more exceptional.  Plenty of studies have shown a link between consumption of these powerful antioxidants (EGCG) and cancer prevention.

Anyway.  Kyle’s favorite Jamba Juice smoothie (which is probably no longer on the menu since we haven’t been in years) is the Matcha Green Tea Blast.  I’m pretty sure it’s just vanilla ice cream and green tea – so calling it a smoothie is truly putting a healthy spin on what’s basically just a glorified milkshake.  The point being, I knew the second I got the matcha powder I was going to make ice cream with it.  But dairy free.

It’s the perfect sumer treat!  Great plain, or even blended into a smoothie.  And since it’s made with real whole foods ingredients, it’s actually easy to indulge without doing damage to your health.

Coconut Matcha Green Tea Ice Cream [dairy free, soy free, nut free, gluten free, egg free]
Ingredients:
  • 2 cans coconut milk
  • 1/2 cup honey (or another liquid sweetener – i.e. agave, brown rice syrup, maple syrup)
  • 1 tbsp matcha green tea powder
Directions:
Add everything to a blender and pulse until mixed then pour into your ice cream maker (following it’s instructions).
Mine churned for ~25 minutes and them I scooped it into a tupperware to store in the freezer.

I used Suzanne’s Specialties “honey” which is actually a vegan blend of liquid sweeteners that tastes just like honey.  It’s kinda crazy how well it replicates both the flavor and texture.  Anyway, it’s a good option for vegans because I really think the flavors of honey and green tea work well together.  And coconut?  That’s just the cherry on the sundae.
The only thing you have to worry about is the burst of energy you may get.  Matcha powder is a fabulous source for focus – which is great for those days when you hit 3 pm and feel like it’s been a month since you woke up that morning.  But maybe not something you want before hitting the sack at night.

I do have to watch myself with the late night dessert-ing.  “Focus” at 11 pm is the opposite of helpful for my already over-analytical brain.
Obviously, you don’t have to pair it with pie, I just haven’t taken the time to properly photograph it solo.  But trust me, it’s plenty good on it’s own.  I highly recommend you buy matcha powder to make this ice cream soon.

I actually just made matcha green tea ice cream for the first time last week! (Although, mine wasn’t of the vegan variety – I used my basic normal organic ice cream base).
I love how thick and creamy it is! And my favorite part about matcha is that it has a sort of natural sweetness- you really don’t need to add much honey/sweetener at all!

OOhhh.. that’s very similar to my Matcha Green Tea Ice Cream recipe – I LOVE it! I do find that it seems to crystallize slightly when it freezes so I have to let it thaw out slightly to get the proper texture. But it’s still better IMO to the dairy-laden, fatty regular ice creams!

I love matcha! I had some amazing vegan matcha tapioca and have been wanting to try to make it myself. It is tough to find a good matcha powder that blends well and has a nice flavor.
