Mediterranean is my middle name

Sadly Saturday was not a sleep in day.  We had to get things moving bright and early, so clearly a sunrise java run was in the cards.

After meeting with our (now confirmed) wedding photographer we hit up the 23rd St/7th Ave Whole Foods.  It was only 11, but Kyle signed us BOTH up for a joint training session with his trainer at 2 pm and I needed to give my tummy digesting time.

Whole Foods’ Mediterranean hot bar was calling to me in a MAYJ way!  Oh how I love falafel!  I had the entire pita with a couple of fried balls 😉

IMG_4106

Do you SEE the ridic volume of hummus in that bin?  It was the perfect consistency so I went a ‘lil overboard.  Thick like buttah!

I was feeling the Mediterranean chow, as if THAT’S new?  But ended up eating WAY more than I wanted to pre-gym.  This is one of the reasons I can’t commit to a certain time of gym action.  How do I know if my stomach will be cooperating?  How do I know if I will have energy at the scheduled training time?  I was definitely uncomfortable with the change (and probably not the most graceful in coping with it – sorry Kyle!).  But I had limited options.

Either I had to eat earlier than I wanted, despite my lack of hunger, to digest my lunch in time, or not eat at all before exercising, and risk having zero energy. Well, since improper fueling is NOT my thang, I ended up going with the first option, and was miserable the entire workout.

It was important to me to NOT look like a pansy in front of Kyle’s trainer, so I wanted to have high energy for his military-meets-Jillian routines…but UNFORTUNATELY that backfired and I felt full and slow.

Don’t worry – I still killed it, and he had NO clue how blah I felt.  I’m no punk!  Even though I was SO scared to go, it was actually REALLY fun!!  Kyle knew how bored I was with my gym routines (and lacking the inspiration to properly prep for my half marathon)…apparently I whined about it long enough to get a reaction…

So last week he told his trainer that he would be bringing me to their next session.  EEK!  Plateau NO MO’.  After 30 minutes with him focusing on abs, arms, and cardio circuit training, I ran 4 miles on the treadmill.

I hope this fire he lit in me results in a permanent change in my usual exercise seshes.

After the workout I spent 20 minutes trying to open my locker.  I was so high on endorphins, but that all came crashing down when I couldn’t for the LIFE of me remember my locker code.  After a Tyra Banks style deliberation period, I finally resigned to have them cut open my lock.  Doh!  Memory FAIL.

I finished off my falafel and hummus for dinner, and then made ANOTHER Mediterranean meal of chickpeas, quinoa, and shredded carrots

Then…my sister Laura arrived!!!!  After some time to get her settled in, and get ready, we headed to The Mercury Lounge for the The Upwelling concert.

IMG_4109

It was such a great concert.  I met Katie right before the boys went on to perform.  Nothing like screaming introductions back and forth over the opening band, right?  I can’t wait to hang out more.  Ari and the band were definitely awesome.  Laura and I loved “Losers” the best.  SO FUN!

After the concert we went to Lolita for some more drinks and met up with more friends…(yadda yadda yadda) we didn’t get home until 2:30 AM.  Well done team!

Wooo! Glad the trainer revved things up. I am always forgetting codes/passwords for stuff. Blame old age 😛

I thought that hummus was MUSTARD! Hate eating off schedule when I’m not ready, but you do what you gotta do…and who can’t make room for felafel and hummus?! Crazy talk.

Glad the gig was good! 😀

Hahaha I just chuckled out loud with a ha ha ha laugh about you having to get your locker cut. That’s so hilarious.

That trainer sesh sounds awesome and it’s definitely the WORST feeling in the world working out with food slushing around in there. Sometimes I’ll drink too much water before or during my workout and if I’m doing crunches I can actually hear the water sloshing around in there. Woo hoo haha

Sounds like a kick ass concert!

  3. blueeyedheart

…and this is why I never bother with locks on my lockers. I just keep anything valuable with me. If someone REALLY wants my clothes that badly, they can have it. 😉

I was in line at a salad bar once and I heard someone behind me saying that when falafel balls are green inside, it means they’re “good and fresh.” So even though that color freaks me out, I guess it’s a positive! 😉

    Glad you enjoyed the concert!

Oh man I have those locker scares all the time. Now I keep my code taped to my iPod since I can’t ever remember it! The training sessions sound great. Not fun being so full though!

  5. lowandbhold

I’ve never had a locker lock for that reason. But I live in Oklahoma City as opposed to New York City so….

So sweet of Kyle to think of you. Sorry your tum was ill, but awesome job rocking the workout anyway!

Glad you had fun with your sis and WooHoo for picking a wedding photographer. You’re getting closer all the time!

  6. ksgoodeats

I’m currently drooling over the falafel, pita, hummus threesome. My WFs skimps on the falafel! I haven’t seen it and I’m about ready to go crazy – don’t they know a girl needs her falafel?!

Oh no to the locker! Well, if you use Kyle’s trainer again you could just use your Jay Robb arms to bust open the lock, no need for them to cut it?!

Glad you had a great weekend 🙂

  7. Haleigh

i am glad to hear that you are out of your slump at the gym! i can never go to the gym for longer than a few months, i get way too bored, i enjoy exercising outdoors much more 🙂 enjoy your day

  8. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga)

Having your lock have to get cutoff your locker had to pretty much be a serious buzz kill. I’ve been there. Sorry you were too 🙂 Good luck finding that happy tummy medium of not eating vs. eating too much prior to a workout. Also, been there.

  9. lilveggiepatch

That hum glob is looking mighty fine, even though I just gorged on some PB choco chip pancakes. Oof! I need Kyle’s trainer! I’m sad he doesn’t use Floyd, though… because how great is the name “Floyd”?

    See you soon, lady!

1: The hummus/mediterranean feast looks DELISH!

2: Love that you had a grea workout and hope it’s a sign of great things to come 🙂

    Hey baby!

I am so, so, so bummed that I missed the show! I really wanted to check it out 🙁 But am very glad for the review.

    xo

  12. janetha

ah! crazy about the lock! that sucks, but nice job sweating through the workout even though you had recently conceived a hummus food baby. have you picked out any names? maybe something mediterranean themed? props for running 4 miles after eating.. i probably would have hurled. and really 4 miles on the treadmill is hard for me because i get so bored with it, i think 3 is my limit. how do you stay entertained? glad you had fun at the show!

  13. Angharad (Eating for England)

Oooh so exciting getting to see a personal trainer and shaking up the exercise regime – woop woop!! Sorry that you had the painful fulness going on – hate when that happens. EVIL hummus luring you in!

  14. Courtney

That is so cool that you got to workout with a personal trainer! I have always wanted to do that…go Kyle! Whatta guy 🙂 When is your 1/2 marathon?

And I totally hear ya on the eating before working out dilemma…with IBS, you never know what your tummy is going to do and how are you supposed to time your food to fuel your workouts?! Grrr. Plus, if I eat to soon before working out, I get horrible side cramps. Like, I am in so much pain I have to stop NOW side cramps. Not good. I am proud of you for powering through–just imagine Kyle’s trainer as Jillian, right?! Damn I miss her radio show!

    Courtney

  15. jenngirl

Balancing workouts and eating schedules is definitely an art form. I tend to plan mine accordingly, but of course there are those times where it just doesn’t work out. At least you were able to power through!

  16. lilveggiepatch

Thanks so much for coming out. Sorry I didn’t get to see you. Maybe we can double date 😉

  17. Diana (Soap & Chocolate)

Way to kill it at the gym! Dang, dawg, you’re gonna shred yo’self right out your wedding dress. Looks like the Upwelling show rocked! Looking forward to my own copy of the CD. 😀

And as usual, there can never be too much hummus.

  18. The Foodie Diaries

Eating med=the way to get fed. Ha, that was bad… But I have been on a serioussss chickpea kick lately, too… There are worse things to be addicted to… I’ll take my meditteranean tastebuds and run with em…

  19. broccolihut

MMm buttah-like hummus is my total fave. I can’t stand these places that try to pass of this runny crap as hummus. Whole Foods knows their stuff, apparently.

  20. elise

i know all about the sloshing inside feeling, i have def heard it too! the trainer was great, but yeah, locker cutting? how pathetic am i?

  21. elise

i concur. chickpea overdosing doesnt sound nearly as lethal as other options.

  22. elise

it was so fun. when my sis leaves, ill take a look at the calendar for potential date.

  23. elise

i think its fun that he has a trainer. he goes about 2 times a week with him bc he was getting bored with his routines, too…and the guy is so nice (albeit a bad ass). i have a half on sep 20th and another in mid october. am i the least bit prepared? not a chance.

  24. elise

its very rare that i would describe a hummus-filled meal as evil, but in this case it was DEF true. grrr.

  25. elise

i zoned out to the black eyed peas cd. the new one is SO pump-up-y you cant help but get your cardio on with it blasting. but i agree that treadmills suck. running outside is SOOO much better. reason #250494760 to move back to CA!!

  26. elise

lets hope!! any half marathons in your future?

  27. elise

can you even believe that?! who doesnt remember their locker code and has to get it CUT. the problem is i have a work locker and a few others and i just COULDNT remember!!! lame lame lame.

  28. elise

haha, you know the SECOND i decide to go without a locker id end up getting everything stolen. and knowing my luck it would be winter and 2 degrees out, so id be freezing my ass off in gym clothes without a subway card or wallet to get me home! haha.

  29. elise

dude missy you are SO smart!!!! im totally doing that now. brilliant!

  30. elise

its was such a ghetto lock that i actually DID try that for a solid 5 minutes…guess i havent been on the powder long enough yet…

  31. elise

thanks for the comment…i agree. it gets old being in the gym with limited machines and limited time. outside is SO much better. trust me, i miss CA for several reasons and the running weather is a BIG one…but dont get my going down that path….where are you from?

  32. homegirlcaneat

Holy shit… I fucking need some falafels too!!!!!
