My highlights: week 30

A quickie since I’m busy packing…

I requested a flag to be flown over the Capitol in DC in honor of us buying our home, and on July 9th, it was!  Now we have the exact flag to hang proudly here in Davis.  Pretty cool in my opinion.

This week was a teething doozy.  Fortunately P figured out straws well enough for smoothies to fill in the nutritional void because he was NOT having it with solids.  At all.

My first pickling experience went so well I decided to do another batch.  This time I pickled green beans.  I’m giving a few jars to friends since they tried and loved the cucumbers and radishes I made previously.  Hopefully they’re just as good!  I still have a ton more green beans to use up so I think I’ll just keep going.  I used old applesauce jars so they hold a lot.  I would have pickled all night, but I ran out of vinegar.  😛

This guy is becoming our bestie even more so now that we are daily visitors (we see him every morning on our neighborhood walk).  P fed him hay twice this week and was OVER THE MOON excited about it.  Such glee and delight each time the horse took the hay from him (I basically hold it once we get close to the horse because I don’t want him to accidentally chomp off patty-cakes’ hand, but he still thinks he’s feeding him).  Previously the horse hasn’t wanted to eat the hay, but this week he was all about it.  And so were we!  I left a note asking the owners if we could bring carrots or apples to feed him but haven’t heard back.  Until then, we just feed him the hay that’s fallen beyond the gate out of his reach.

Our power was out for a few hours one morning so I lit the stove with a match and made breakfast that way.  Clearly making freezer waffles on the stove ends up in a little more char than the waffle iron…oops.

To satisfy my craving for something sweet but hold me over like something protein-full, I mixed brown rice protein powder into my goat yogurt.  Then I topped it with a super seedy, super clustery (home-made) granola.  Delicious.

And since I’m on the subject of yogurt, I may as well tell you I’m in a big time yogurt phase.  I don’t usually eat it plain (preferring to add it to smoothies or baked goods) but it’s been the perfect snack lately.  This honey flavor is my new number one.  It’s simple but so so good.

Just curious, are you totally off the low fodmap diet? ? You seem to be listing lots of fodmaps on your blog lately. If so, freeing, isn’t it!

Yum! I love pickled green beans! Pickled asparagus is super yummy too. In my opinion, pickles are over rated compared to these fun alternatives !

O my gosh p is getting sooo big! I was just looking at some pictures you have posted of brown rice protein, i have been reading a lot and seeing a few alarming articles about toxic metals being present in that particular protein and was wondering if you have ever contacted the company? Just trying to look out for your beautiful family.

I looooove pickled green beans!! (Ok, fine, pickled anything) I actually just had some by ricks picks that were made with soy sauce and ginger in the pickle marinade that were mind blowing…
Glad P likes the smoothies, i’m sure yours are amazing. And feeding the horse is so fun! We lived nearby pastures of cows and would stop to wave and moo at them- not feed them- as well as sheep in the springtime and the neighbor’s chicken coop
