A little background…

Last month I was talking with a patient’s friend and she mentioned that she drinks aloe.  As a beverage, not a topical application.  Having seen these drinks pop up more and more at Whole Foods, I’ve been wondering about the health benefits (and more importantly the flavor).

It makes sense I guess.  Your GI tract is just a continuation of your derm…it just happens to be on the inside.  So if aloe is so good for your skin, why wouldn’t it be good for your gut?  Ok, that’s not necessarily a great motto, I doubt ingesting lotion or petroleum jelly would lead to a great outcome.  But aloe is in everything from eye drops to mouthwash, functioning as a natural anti-inflammatory agent.

And now it’s in drinks!

So when I was contacted by Sokenbicha, I was obviously intrigued.  My interest had been piqued and this was the tipping point.

I like natural remedies.  I like tea.  And I like caffeine just as much as way more than the next person, so green tea and aloe has my name all over it.  I received a case of the Replenish flavor – a tea blend of organic green tea and jasmine flower, rose hips, ginseng and ginger, flavored with mint and pear and tried it right away.  Guess what?  It’s really good!

I don’t like sugary drinks, so I’m glad it is unsweetened.  But at the same time, I don’t like strong teas without any kind of sweetness.  Sokenbicha doesn’t knock you out with caffeine and the green tea has a nice mild flavor.  And it’s zero calories.  Perfect!

They are also an eco-friendly company, which gives them the hippie stamp of approval.

Wanna try some?

Hello, I love the teas that are actually called tisanes..the ones derived from flowers. I also love anything with Bergamot in it, like Earl Gray. And finally, I love green tea and have played with it as a ingredient in a homemade facial! My favorite time for tea is the afternoon…morning is coffee time and always will be! Oh, I have never tried an aloe infusion but after reading this I am going to do some research!

  2. Lizzie

I drink tea when the 3 pm slump hits, and my favorite is Honest Green Tea with honey. I tried an aloe beverage years ago, but it had gelatinous chunks of aloe in it. The sliminess was hard to take. Sokenbicha sounds a lot more appetizing!

  3. Shelby (everydayvegangirl)

I love yerba mate, green tea and chamomile. My favorite time of the day to drink tea is after dinner. It helps curb any sugary dessert cravings I may be having too!

  4. Danielle J

I love pretty much every flavor of Honest Tea.. Especially the Vanilla Mint White Tea, yum 😀

  5. Emma

I drink jasmine blossom green tea almost every morning at work. It smells just as good as it tastes and it helps warm me up in the rainy pacific northwest weather. Iced green tea is also a favorite when the sun it out 🙂

  6. Nicole G

I typically drink tea to warm me up or give me some caffeine without ingesting the chemicals of diet soda since I don’t like coffee (I know, the HORROR!). I love peppermint flavored teas the most =)

  7. Missy

I think the most refreshing types of tea are green, ginger, or lemon!

  8. Rebecca

My favorite type of tea right now is Yunnan (black), but if I want something less caffeinated I go for green tea or some sort of Yogi tea.

  9. Deanna

I tried an aloe beverage that had chunks of aloe in it 🙂 It was good but didn’t quench my thirst!

  10. Hannah

I really love brewing a strong cup of tea and then putting it over ice—my favorite flavor is Yogi vanilla perfect energy! I have this first thing in the morning instead of coffee, and it really does the trick. I’ve had an aloe/coconut hydration drink before and really loved it. I’ve heard it has great benefits and is good for soothing the GI tract, so I should get into drinking it more

  11. Lauren

I love tea at the end of the day. Perfect drink to have before bed!

  12. Jennifer

    :d

  14. lindsey

i shouldn’t admit this but i am obsessed with this artificially-sweetened, fake-peach-ring-tasting “peach green tea beverage.” luckily for my health, it’s only available at certain gas stations (classy, i know) so i don’t drink it more than once a month. suffice it to say, my body would be appreciative of the sokenbicha goodness! 🙂

  15. Susan

I have never tried aloe drinks, but I’m intrigued! Lately I have gotten into Mint Green Tea. I am trying to decrease my coffee intake but find by late afternoon I still need some sort of pick-me-up, so trying to make the switch to tea!

  23. Laura

I love hot tea in the morning and iced tea the ENTIRE day. I’m seriously addicted. I’ve never drank aloe but in true hippie style, my mom would keep an aloe plant in case of sunburns. We lived in the Upper Peninsula of MI, not exactly the most notorious burn-zone! 🙂 I like unsweetened tea too, especially green tea with lemongrass. Mmmm. The lemongrass smooths out the acidity of the green tea perfectly. Now I’m going to have to brew a cup!

  31. Alyssa

I don’t generally drink tea just cause I don’t like to have caffeine. That being said, I do find it particularly soothing right before bed sometimes or even right after a hard run. Yesterday, I came back from a particularly hard run and grabbed a cold green tea. So refreshing! I’ve never had an aloe beverage but it sounds really awesome and I’d love to try it!

I just tried an aloe drink for the first time, and it was delicious! Got it at TJ’s and it was grape flavored, which was odd, but yummy. Very hydrating, I loved it.

  85. Li

I adore tea first thing in the morning! I was ADDICTED to ‘builders tea’ as we call it here – really strong tea with milk and 2 sugars for years, but I went cold turkey gave them up (not easy!). Now my favourite is a lovely hot peppermint tea, especially when my IBS is playing up as it really settles my tummy. I’m also loving a nice refreshing Lady Grey with a slice of lemon mid-afternoon. 95. Sue

Hi Elise! I just have to say that you are my new hero! You and I are much the same, just living on different oceans I guess. Like you I am also a whole food/health food fanatic, I love exercising (5K’s woot!), and I was diagnosed with IBS about 8 years ago. Also, I am currently pursuing my RN! 18 more months, baby 🙂 I have modified my diet and lifestyle activities to work through my IBS and I kid you not, 14 months ago my gastroenterologist concluded no more “IBS” for me 🙂 Since then I have gone completely plant-based and MAN, do I feel awesome! Simple modifications like TEAS instead of coffees (though I still indulge) have really made a huge impact for me. SO, I’d like to answer your three questions regarding the So-Ken-Bi-Cha:
    1) I find iced teas to be most refreshing in the summer time. At the beach, in the woods, on a picnic, on my back deck – yes, please! And I find hot teas to be most refreshing in the evenings. Green teas with dinner (Mmm), Chamomile’s with dessert, or cozying up on the couch. Even a great black tea in the AM on a snowy New England morning.
    2) Peach flavored iced teas are my FAV.
    3) I have never tried an aloe beverage! Sounds nifty.
    Thanks Elise! Rock on.

  100. denise

I love mint tea! Unsweetened is preferred! Also, I’ve seen those aloe drinks and they kind of freak me out. It looks like green goo but in a tea…I think I could get on board with that!

  104. Samantha

  120. Katherine Hills

Iced lemon tea with LOTS of ice and big slices of fresh lemon thrown in – this was most refreshing every single day I spent when travelling, especially in Hong Kong- waking up early, exploring all day in the humidity, eating way too much tasty food and then partying every evening in the city that never sleeps!!!
I have never tried aloe vera drink before- I am a student and it always comes with a high price tag, I stick to home made iced green tea to save my pennies 🙂

My favorite tea flavor is a seasonal flavor from Trader Joe’s called: “candy cane green tea”. I stock up on it ever year at the holidays so I can drink it all year long. Yummy. 🙂

I’m usually drink a cup of green tea when the afternoon slump hits around 3:30. I never tried an aloe drink but it sounds intriguing.

I think that my favorite way to enjoy tea is to drink it iced in the heat of the summer. Peppermint is my favorit flavor.

I think I really love plain green tea the best! And I love it at night. I would LOVE to try an aloe drink–I am also a big believer in Mother Nature’s remedies!

I find tea the most refreshing in the summer when it’s cold!! Iced tea is an AMAZING thirst quencher – i need to start drinking it because my winter-mode coffee habit is not going so well anymore

I find tea most refreshing when I need a break during the work day. A cup of tea is relaxing and rejuvenating during a long work day! My tea of choice lately is bancha which is a Japanese green tea.

My current favorite flavor of tea is the Chamomille Citrus flavor of Mighty Leaf tea. Tazo green ginger is my second fave!

Is it too late to enter? Oh well…my favorite tea is celestial seasoning’s sugar cookie sleigh ride, it smells amazing and tastes as close to a sugar cookie you can get without sugar.

A Naturopath-y Dr had me take Aloe for my stomach a year or two ago. It worked wonders! I would love to try these drinks, I’ve been hearing about them but haven’t seen them in local stores. Pick me =]

I’ve actually tried straight-up aloe juice and it cured my “acid reflux”. Another friend also tried aloe juice for digestive issues and it helped him, too.

  138. Madeline

I like lemon and honey flavored tea the best.

  139. Tierney @ Get Your Veg On

I drink hot green tea just about every morning. I also make my own iced jasmine green tea to have with meals instead of soda.

Tea is most refreshing when I wake up, when I need something comforting, and when I am winding down. There is a tea for every occasion!

  141. Corey

I love green tea with citrus peels mixed in!
