Shout out to the ones I love

imageimage

If Pigpen and Courtney Love shared a teeny tiny living space, I’d imagine it would still look more organized than our apartment.  Moving isn’t fun.  There’s chaos everywhere.  Given that, I believe I deserve mayj props for busting out a semi respectable breakfast.

Berry carob pancakes

  • 1 1/2 cup brown rice flour
  • 2 tsp NuNaturals stevia
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 cup frozen (and then thawed) berries
  • 1/4 cup carob chips
  • 1 shake Marx Foods salt
  • 1 cup Silk vanilla soymilk

I gobbled them up hot off the press…much like the Cosmo, Bride, and InStyle mags right below.

Ok, so the mags weren’t exactly brand new…but that’s what time off is for, right?  To catch up on thought provoking literature the latest hair styles and sex tips.  Yeah.  Tell that to the movers who show up to an apartment that looks like it was the headquarters for the riots in Greece.

IMG_8972

I packed a pita pocket with peter piper’s pickled peppers.  Sorry, I can’t resist a good alliteration…

IMG_8974IMG_8975

What the pita really held was avocado, roasted red pepper hummus, nooch, carrots, and sprouts.

IMG_8976

A kinda amazing combo.

Normally, my workout would go here.  However, it seems as though Mr. Weatherman is off the wagon (again) and in his delirium has returned the East Coast temps to the brrrr range.  I don’t do well with outside running temps that aren’t at least above Fiddy.  I could have done Jillian’s workout, but reading eating sounded like much more fun.

Did you know (a) if you spray popcorn with cooking spray the salt sticks better and (b) if you add carob chips immediately after popping they melt perfectly.

Carob chips + salty popcorn = an afternoon snack fit for a queen sloth

IMG_8984

My raw One Lucky Duck oatmeal raisin cookies are almost gone :(  As much as I want to replenish my supply, the $$$ is a bit steep and I’m trying (not very successfully) NOT to buy more food before we move.

In an effort to begin the fridge cleaning process, I made zucchini pasta for dinner…

IMG_9002IMG_9003

First, I cooked Shirataki noodles on the stove while spiralizing the zucch.

After the noodles were “done” (note: they are already cooked so I guess this step is fairly vague), I turned off the flame and added the zucchini noodles to the hot water.  I’ve had it raw before, but if you let the zucchini soak for a bit, it softens up, which can be better when combined with another kind of noodle.

IMG_9005

Next I dumped on a small mountain of nooch and tossed in some peas and corn.

IMG_9006

…and game, set, match.  Enjoy.

IMG_8983

Is there anything more heart breaking than knowing that this was my very last cookie?  Negative ghost rider.

IMG_8392

On the late night, I made a fruit platter with apples and strawberries the size of my fist.  Organic?  I think not.  I don’t have to take a urine sample to know that these ‘beezies have steroid use written all over them.

Before I publish, I want to give a few shout outs:

Happy Mother’s Day to my Mom.

Awww, I love those photos! :p
And those pancakes look so good, yum. 🙂

Moving is not fun at all, definitely, but all the chaos is worth it in the end I think.

Hope you’re having a good day!

  2. Kate

Those photos do NOT = ew

    Love them!

  3. snackface

No. Those photos = AW!!! Oh fashion, how you change. Oh, and I guess puberty had a part, too.

How do you feel about shritake noodles? They creep me out/make me a bit gaggy, yet I still want to like them. As in, I’d give em a third chance.

  4. BroccoliHut

Yum, love the idea of nooch in a pita!

  5. Courtney

Moving sucks ass. Plain and simple. Moving. Sucks. The. Big. One. Enough said. I am so sorry–I wish I were there to help!

AND, I think you deserve major props for posting at all while moving, not to mention making and taking photos of your awesome breakfast!

hahaha the one time i made shirataks i blew dry them so they would get super dry. i like to think of that as a low in my life. i had more concern about the dryness of my noodles as opposed to my hair.

girl dont you worry about your cookies 😉 that’s why you have hookups in ny (cough me cough) to send your cookies to cali.

Dude, shiritaki noodles… I am very confused as to what they are supposed to taste like… Maybe i was freaked out by the smell and ignored the positive aspects about them? Those pics remind me of minor-league soccer and all the fun it was! I love the fact that strawberries are totally monsters right now! Organic, probably not, meh… I don’t care to much either, they are beautiful! I hope your move starts to smooth out, i know it will… I hate boxing everything up to, but it gives you a chance to throw away a bunch of useless stuff and buy all new junk when you get to Cali 🙂

  10. Lisa

Everything looks yummy! Thanks for sharing. I could really go for the pancakes (and know exactly what you mean about the oneluckyduck stuff….I’m pacing myself and holding back right now too!).

  13. Jackie (Peaces of Earth)

ohhh how I love One Lucky Duck!! Can’t wait to go back home to NY and have another mallomar. OMG to die for.

  14. Indu

    Hey Elise!!

Been a regular around here for awhile. Love your posts and I get some really good healthy eating ideas!!

    Thanks 🙂

  15. Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine

I kind of love when strawberries are jacked up on ‘roids. Probably not the best for me, but they’re so much more fun to eat…or smother in chocolate 🙂 I love how you mixed the shirtaki noodles and zucchini, I need to give that a go!

  16. samantha

i lurve shirataki noodles – with some tomato sauce and broccoli and nooch. mm mm good. they do kind of smell nastface though.

i cannot be trusted around strawberries. whether roided up or midgets, i love them all. equal opportunity eating?

  17. Angharad

Those photos made my day! Love old 90s/00s photos. Gold.
I’ve never tried carob/chocolate chip salty popcorn – I want too so badly now!

  18. runnerforever

Why haven’t I thought to mix carob chips or chocolate chips in my popcorn?! That sounds grand!

  19. Jessica (jesslikesithot)

Ok soooo I’m heading home tomorrow… meaning that I NEED to try those berry, carob-y pancakes asap! And the hummus, avo, nooch and veg pitas! NOW. Those look amazing! Nuff said.

  20. Heather Eats Almond Butter

    Elise,
Oh my gosh, did not know you were moving. Again, sorry, so behind. You’re leaving the amazing kitchen with the cool spice rack on the wall which I still covet?!? 😉

Pancakes look and sound delicious as does the popcorn. I used to love dumping peanut M&M’s into my salty popcorn, and so I know I’d love it with carob chips as well. However, I need to get a popcorn popper or something as we are microwaveless.

Best of luck with the move, and enjoy those huge ass strawberries. I just bought some from Costco that look just as big, and I have eaten the whole container (HUGE) in about 24 hours. I’m surprised my fingers aren’t stained red.

  21. Kat Kirkwood

    Glad I found your blog!

re: the noods – i have mixed emotions
they def have a stank upon opening and the consistency is questionable, but once you get over the suspect part, they are ok. i dunno. im not a huge fan, but i (too) keep trying, which is why each time i buy a pack it sits in the fridge for a few months until i randomly see them enough times to “crave” them. they are much better as leftovers since their texture/consistency seems to repel flavor/sauce/etc.

  23. elise

you are a freak. and i love it.

ps im banking on your OLD hookup 😉

  24. elise

i pretty much mirror your feelings on those noodles. they are weird. plain and simple. i keep wanting to like them though!! meh.

here the sad thing about those pics – that was high school. sadly, it took a while for that whole puberty thing to hit. i was a SHRIMP (pretty much until college).

as for packing – im in purge mode – BIG time!

  25. elise

thanks love! youre right, moving is most definitely worth it 🙂

  26. elise

you are very kind. that one of me at the end (5 feet tall, 80 lbs) is high school though…yeah…puberty didnt really hit until college, so i looked like a 10 year old pretty much until i went to UCLA. its a miracle i didnt go boy/sex crazy once i finally turned into a woman (or maybe im still waiting…). the good news is, despite my appearance, i was SO confident that i didnt even realize i was so small or physically immature. its only looking back on these pics now that im aware of how little i was!!

  27. elise

i so wish i were mega rich. id hire you to fly out to NYC, spend a week dining and eating our raw oats together, and then in exchange you’d help us move.
the good news, we are a bit spoiled and have hired movers to help us. it may preserve my sanity 5% at least (heres hoping)

  28. elise

its SO hard!! everything is way too tasty 🙂

  29. elise

awww…youre so sweet. how did the competition go? or is it this weekend? i cant remember – i just know it was/is coming up. those shoes you got were crazy!! do they take you back to your crazy vegas party nights? hahaha. kidding. love the bling 🙂

  30. elise

dude, im a strawberry fiend. i rarely show how many apples, strawberries, or other fruit I actually eat because it’s borderline crazy.

  31. elise

it’s AWESOME!!! try it, you wont be disappointed 🙂

  32. elise

the spices are coming with us – no worries 🙂
im SOOOO excited for the move (only 3 more days!!!!!!!!!!)
now if you make it to CA in the near future, we MUST meet up ok? ill be back and forth between northern and southern until the wedding, and after that we will hopefully be settling in the santa monica area.

  33. elise

    thanks kat! me too 🙂

  34. Gena

Love the photos!! And love the idea of a noochy spiralized zuke dinner! Will have to try it soon.

  35. Ethel

Thanks for the LOVE Rubia!!! This totes made me much better. I’ve been so mia on reading your post since leaving yours, well soon to be just nyc, that I’ve missed out on this goodness. But, have no fear, I have loads to catch you up on, so with 3 more nights of sleep, it’ll be doneso!

p.s. can I request you make me your “pasta” when you move back here? it looks muy bueno!

  36. Courtney

Hired movers?!? Wow–that rocks! That’ll make it tons easier–at least I hope it will. Moving still sucks, though…even, I imagine, with hired help, lol!
