Philly: Old Nelson on the go

After brunch, my parents had to head to the airport, but Kyle and I still had a few hours to kill. We filled the time with a long stroll through campus followed by a trip to the 30th street train station.  We bought SEPTA tickets to the airport and food for the flight.  I’m sorry (but not really?) to say, I didn’t make into a Wawa over the weekend.   For non-Philly readers, I’d liken the chain to 7-Eleven, but for me the nostalgia of getting both coffee and soft pretzels is what makes the… Read more >

Philly: White Dog Cafe

Last morning in Philly! Rather than trek into Center City again, we stayed in our ‘hood for breakfast. Even though they are right next to each other, I’m not very familiar with either Penn or Drexel’s campus. Because I was in the accelerated nursing program at Drexel I spent nearly all of my time in Center City.  The only occasion I had to go over to the main part of campus where the university buildings and lecture halls are was for finals (HESI exams).  Blah. But I did pass through campus on my way to… Read more >

Philly: Continental

My groothie was the perfect energy boost I needed so I could walk the long way home from center city. But it didn’t stop me from enjoying a pre-dinner dessert snack.   I managed to stop half way through this frosting filled cookie delight but da-yam it was hard.  The cookie was thin enough that it didn’t dominate the sandwich, but the frosting was still balanced.  Yeah, it was sweet, but I was expecting it to be over the top excessive (which it actually wasn’t).  It was goooood. Before I ruined my appetite completely,… Read more >

Philly: Veg Eats

Sweet Freedom Bakery is Philadelphia’s first (and only) allergen friendly bakery. It’s on South Street (between Broad and 15th). The sign says it all right – vegan, soy free, egg free, kosher, gluten free, peanut free, corn free, no refined sugar, casein free, wheat free…you get the point.  Basically, they have delicious baked treats for people with wacky GI systems (like me!). They were featured on the Cooking Channel’s Food(ography) and the Food Network’s Cupcake Wars.  Cool huh! So I went a little crazy. 🙂 Here’s a full list of what they offer (ps they… Read more >

Philly: Corner Bakery and Markets

I got over 10 hours of sleep but still slept in quite a bit on Saturday.  So did my parents and Kyle.  Eventually we made our way to center city for brunch.   You can’t go wrong with the Corner Bakery Cafe.   We got a bunch of things  – some to share, some to hoard.   Look at the spread.   Kyle and my dad both got the same thing – the Farmer’s Scrambler – with eggs scrambled with red and green bell peppers, red onions, mushrooms, potatoes, and cheddar cheese.  Normally it’s served… Read more >
