Oh Joe

In New York, there are things that are expensive for no reason, and then there are things that are expensive because they are the best. Joe is expensive because it is the best.  It’s called “the art of coffee” for a reason.  It’s worth the extra cash flow.  And since New Yorkers are accustomed to paying more for quality, it’s why the coffee shop thrives. They have several locations in Manhattan (and even one in Brooklyn), and will soon be opening another on the UES.  Gossip Girl, did that get your attention?  Good morning Upper… Read more >

Spring Street Natural

On Friday night, Kyle and I met up with Marisa for dinner in SOHO.    I have a long list of to-try restaurants in NYC, so being back for the weekend is a nice chance to cross some more off.  Spring Street Natural has been around for over four decades, serving natural cuisine with an emphasis on fresh and healthy fare.  The menu is really diverse, with choices in each course ranging from completely vegan and macrobiotic plates to innovative to seafood and poultry entrees.  This makes it a perfect place to take your non-vegan… Read more >

17th St. Cafe & Bakery

(Based on the name of this post) you can probably guess where I went to dinner over the weekend… 17th Street Cafe & Bakery!  It’s on Montana Ave (and 17th Street – duh) and has been on my to-try list ever since we moved to Santa Monica.  I live a few blocks away, so there’s really no reason why I haven’t yet been. Last week Alene emailed saying she had a groupon for the restaurant that was about to expire.  There’s nothing like a coupon for food to get a group of friends together (add… Read more >

Plan B

This overnight concoction tasted just like a peanut butter and jelly Larabar.  While I never really cared much for the whole oats-in-a-jar phenom that rocked the blog world circa 2010, I also can’t stand waste.  Fact: the best way to get every last lick of peanut butter is use the nearly empty jar as a vessel for overnight oats.   I added in oats, maple syrup, apricots, and almond milk, then topped it off with almonds, cashews & dried cranberries.   The next morning is was super gooey.    After breakfast I caught up on… Read more >

Counting at The Counter

Monday night was my last night to squeeze in dinner with my girlfriend (in town from NYC).  So many visitors this past weekend!  Regular readers may recall our monthly girlfriend dinner dates in NYC.  Yeah, we enjoy trying new places together.    The Counter has several locations (tons in both Nor Cal and So Cal, as well as Chicago, NYC, Seattle, etc.).  There are even two locations in Ireland! Likes: Build-Your-Own form with boxes to check (a list person’s dream) House-made veggie burger option (no thawed Boca patties) Topping extravaganza (the burgers additions offered… Read more >
