Adios Madrid

Our final day together in Spain was only partially spent in Madrid. To anyone considering a day trip to El Escorial – go!  It’s an easy excursion that’s interesting even if you’re not a history geek. We started at a non-Starbucks cafe (called Faborit) that actually had soy milk.  It was maybe 25 steps from the hotel lobby so we kinda felt like idiots for dismissing it the entire time.  Oops! Croissants. Cafe con soja. I was psyched to see a new city since I’d already been everywhere else we’d travelled thus far.  Plus, I… Read more >

A parrilla in espana

After covering Madrid on foot, you’d think I’d just want to pass out rest before dinner.  You’d be correct.  Then my dad got inspired and somehow dragged me into checking out the hotel gym with him.  “Just to see it.”  One thing led to another and suddenly I was roped into a 5:30 pm workout date with my pops.  Damn.  I had totally come to peace with my exercise free vacay.  Sure I was slightly annoyed that I had wasted precious cargo space on my running shoes and other cardio gear, but I like being… Read more >

Mercado in May

On May 18th, our daily Starbucks morning meet-up was a bit delayed because Alene’s a bit slow.  She couldn’t figure out her iPad alarm.  Fail.     Eventually we all got coffee, food, and set off to Madrid’s Palacio Real.   I could seriously live the royal life. It was impressive and decadent and over the top (and the whole time I was thinking of how Kate Middleton really hit the jackpot).    We spent 30 minutes longer than I would’ve on my own, but that’s the cross you bear when traveling with this fam. … Read more >

Yerbabuena in Madrid

Last I left off, we were enjoying some down time back at the hotel. Madrid isn’t that big – we ran into Ethel and Alene as they returned from Toledo.  This gave us some time to plan out our evening. We decided to meet for drinks at an Irish pub my dad had been eyeing the entire vacation called Ulysses. Standard. After a round of beer (and some salty nuts) we said goodbye to Ethel (who left us for a hot date) and we walked around the corner to a vegan friendly restaurant called Yerbabuena…. Read more >

Day trip to Toledo

May 17th After a hideous night’s sleep I was extremely grumpy in the AM.  I hid it pretty well although I don’t think I strung more than ten words together until noon. We cafe-d and got desayuno para llevar and then set off to Atocha for the second day in a row.  [This time we actually had the intention of going somewhere] Having already purchased tix the day before, we had time to sit and enjoy breakfast before boarding the renfe train to Toledo. My seat mate was tuning me out. Clearly, I wasn’t enjoying… Read more >
