oh well i think all the other good things knock out number 7, yes? let’s focus on that! happy bday gorgeous!

  13. Red Deception

The glucose tolerance test will hopefully turn out well. Most of my prenatal patients are VERY unhappy with the fasting… letting a pregnant woman go without food or water!

And the happiest of birthdays! It sounds like it was a day well spent. Where does your man fit into your plans?

  14. Carrie

Feliz Cumple, I adore your blog!!!!

  16. Sarah C

    Happy birthday!

I want to tell you that the stupid gestational diabetes thing sucks (if you have it, which I did) but really really A) it’s not your fault (you’re a nurse, you know this, as did I – but I couldn’t help feeling like it was related to something I did or ate) and B) a diet like yours will honestly help you control the blood sugar readings without any other interventions. My only high readings were after eating Indian food (all that naan!) and chili with cornbread (all those carbs!). When I ate normally (mostly vegan, but I ate dairy) my readings were fine. I hope you don’t actually have what I called the g-d GD but if you do you’ll survive it so much better than someone on a SAD. (And my baby was at normal weight and is currently a tiny little 27-lb almost-3 yo, so it didn’t do anything to spike her weight at all).

My friend’s initial glucose test came back high and the second one came back just fine. She was also told that they lowered the number that indicates a “high” reading meaning that more people fail the first test. Money maker?

hes at a business thing for the week but he stopped by brunch w my mom to say hi. we celebrated last weekend though 🙂

  45. Elise (Post author)

thank you so so much sarah. its so niec to hear this from someone else. i hope i dont have the gd GD, but your reassuring comment was exactly what i needed to hear. i was obsessing about it all yesterday (of course) and just so confused as to why i am dealing with this since i try to eat well and im still very active – jogging and walking on every day off – but like you said, its just freakin hormones. so ill keep my head up and look to your experience as proof that its manageable and not the end of the world.

  46. Elise (Post author)

thanks shana. my reading was 147 and the cut off for “high” (that needs retesting) is 140. while i was fairly close, its still worrying to me because im so good w my diet and exercise. blah. i know its not my fault, but im still having a hard time not overanalyzing my every decision. hormones!!! anyway, thanks for the reassuring comment. hopefully my second test will be normal.

  47. Elise (Post author)

im really thinking my 30s are gonna be awesome. 🙂

  48. Elise (Post author)

    ???

i saw shiny toy guns with my girlfriend – is that what you are referring to?

my mom and i brunched at the shutters on the beach. i cant think of anything we saw…aside from lots of cute clothes i want, but cant fit into. 😉

  49. Elise (Post author)

    best comment ever. 🙂

    9. My mom and I watched last night with take-out from Poquito Mas.

    ????

  52. Sarah C

I know what you mean about feeling like it’s your fault. When I got the call about the first test (and honestly, I knew something was wrong when after the fasting test I almost passed out) I cried in my office. But it really is just the hormones and while our diet and exercise couldn’t stop it, I trust that it can control it. Good luck with the second test!

  53. Elise (Post author)

Oh! I was referencing the giants game. Guess that wasn’t very clear.

  54. Lou

Yay, Happy Birthday – sounds like you had the perfect day 🙂

Also, wasn’t your original glucose test fasting? That seems weird, as how can they test your glucose accurately WITHOUT you having fasted before hand?

Anyway, I reckon that was the worst of the pregnancy tests – I felt ILL for DAYS after having to scull that evil orange liquid – seriously I had a 3 day sugar hangover. I’m sure the fasting results will be better 🙂

  55. Caity @ Moi Contre La Vie

Happy (belated – sorry) birthday! This is quite a list – Sounds like congratulations & commiserating are both in order. Good luck w/ the fasting and GO GIANTS!

P.S. I live in SF and it has never been so loud. Ever.

  56. BroccoliHut

Happy belated birthday! Sounds like you had plenty of fun celebration activities planned. Sorry to hear about the GTT results, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it was just a fluke.

  57. Ashley Pomes

Happy belated birthday! Hope you had a fun time T the concert. They are a great band. I’m happy Farrah is back.

  58. Sarah

Happy belated birthday!!!! Welcome to the 30s! (Mine only began in June). I’m thinking the 30s are going to be great.

Bummer about your GD test. I’m sure the next one will be fine, will be thinking of you. I’m not sure when mine is but I’m really nervous that mine’s going to come back high. I’ve been eating way more sugar than is healthy during this pregnancy. Must. cut. back.

Anyway, hope you have a great birthday week! xxxx

  59. Brigid

Happy birthday! I love Poquito Mas so much.

  60. lynn @ the actor's diet

I failed my first GTG test in my first pregnancy. I actually had a long talk with the CNM because I have to take it for my current pregnancy next week. Not taking it isn’t an option because I am at a birth center. Anyway, I found it interesting that she said people who eat healthier diets tend to fail the test more often! (Makes you wonder how great of a test it is). To increase my simple carbohydrate intake two says before the test. Since I mostly eat plants, slow carbs and beans/protein. That 50g of pure glucose is shocking to you system if you don’t eat a lot of sugar. Also, water and exercise lower blood glucose. So if you drink an adequate amount of water up to the test, it helps!

  64. Elise (Post author)

i agree. i think that people who rarely ingest such high concentrations of sugar probably shock their system with this test. im still surprised my body couldnt tolerate it though. i only understand the endocrine system in a limited way (nursing school was a while ago!!) but im still surprised that i had such a high reading. especially since my second tests results were incredibly normal (and wayyyy lower than the first test). bizarre. and in regard to your exercise comment, the oddest part of all was that i was running around (literally high-tailing it on foot) doing a ton of errands for the hour between drinking the glucola and returning for the reading. and thats the one i failed. whereas, the follow up that i passed, i was basically sedentary for the 3 hours. weird. they should probably just skip the first test and only do the fasting 3 hour one since it seems to unreliable (although i cant believe i just said that since i wanted to keel over after not eating for so long)!!!
