The sky is falling, the sky is falling

I was sloshing the morning away with all this liquid love.

I’m a certified Amazing-Grass-a-holic.  Chocolate luuurrve.  By the way, this smoothie was made with frozen bananas and plain greek yog, and was the BEST version yet.  I wish my blender actually crushed ice the way blenders are supposed to…for some reason I keep getting to the bottom of my “blended” drinks to discover 4 ice cubes balls with the corners knicked off…I guess I’ll just have to make do with this one until next summer because we have no room in our kitchen (or budget) for a new appliance.  I can just picture the wedding registry now: blentec, spiralizer, food processor, juicer, dehydrator.

I basically just snacked away the afternoon, since I was catching up on errands around the apt.  The weather outside was crap, so I had no interest in braving the downpour to go to the gym, which is why my food has no rhyme or reason.  I’m seriously confused by this east coast weather.  Rain?  It was sunny the entire weekend, and I finally get a day off, and next thing I know, the sky is falling.

SAD as I was about the weather, I had a million other things to get out of the way.  So, without exercise on the horizon, my eating plan changed into a mini snack-a-thon because I knew I didn’t need to pre-fuel myself to keep my energy up and belly quiet…which sounds like a no brainer, but it’s usually a lot of planning ahead.  Anyways, I was craving sweetness, and had lots of fruit (fresh and dried) on hand to satisfy myself and then some.

Get your mind out of the gutter, Jess, the proportions are all wrong!

IMG_3446

I decided to take a chance on the OG flavor…scary!  I made sure not to shake it, since I knew this was one of the explosive flavors, but evidently that didn’t matter.  Effervescent much?

It took about 2 minutes to finally calm down…and by then, half the drink ($2 worth) was gone.  It was ok, but I think I’ll stick to the flavored Kombucha from now on.  Warning: do NOT open this drink around anything important (ie: computer, work papers, etc.).

I knew I was heading out for dinner and I didn’t want to ruin my appetite, so I decided to just have a smallish meal in the late afternoon.  Seaweed/sesame salad + chickpeas = happy hippie 😀

IMG_3289 IMG_3289

I had to zoom in on the yumminess that the chickpeas added to this seaweed salad.  That said, I tiny drizzle of olive oil goes a long way, and it could have used a lot less.  Oh well.

Once I was showered, I hit the streets to walk over to Gena’s apt for a fun little get together.  As you may have read by now, it was quite the eventful night!

In addition to amazing raw eats and fabulous company, we also witnessed something that only happens in movies – the collapse of a ceiling.

But let me back up.

Even though I arrived at her apartment looking more like a drenched alley cat than a human, she still greeted me with open arms.  As others arrived, I met some more NY bloggers and we all marveled over the cute apartment she managed to snag.  The kitchen alone made me jealous enough to consider abandoning my current pint sized pad.  And then I saw what could only be described as raw heaven

You can read about all these delish dishes and how to make them on Gena’s blog, but let me say, if this is raw, I don’t want to be right I am on board.

As an avocado enthusiast, my taste buds were overjoyed with all the dressings and dips.  The (unpictured) guacamole was probably one of my favorites, although the mini pizza bites (zucch, sundried toms, pizza “cheese”) were definitely a close runner-up.  Thanks again Gena for such a gourmet meet up!

Suddenly our eating and chatting came to an abrupt halt when we heard an insanely loud crashing noise.  I think we all looked at each other with the same WTF was that?! expression.   Oddly enough, the kitchen was devoid of any wreckage, despite the avalanche like disturbance.  Hmmm…then we opened the bathroom door.

Holy sh!t indeed.

Thank god nobody was on the toilet because that would have been a pretty rough way to be interrupted while taking a dump relieving oneself.

no ceiling

The sky is falling, the sky is falling!

While the landlord was assessing the damage, we continued on with the evening…it’s gonna take more than shattered porcelain to shake up this group!

Heather and Ashley both brought delish cookies which I was more than willing to sample.  No photos here, but Heather wrote a post on hers, and we were lucky just to get any at all after half of them went AWOL on her trek to NYC.  Ashley made super-charge-me cookies, about which I’ve heard nothing but rave reviews, and wow, were they good.  I’m glad I wasn’t sitting where Diana was, or the entire tin would have been empty by the end of the night!

All in all, it was a great night, and so fun to welcome Lindsay back to the big apple.  I was thrilled to meet so many lovely ladies, including Heather, Diana, Lindsay, Ashley, Katherine, and of course the hostess herself, Gena.

I got home and cuddled up with my new book and an apple.

Just to prove I reciprocate in the domesticity department, here’s a beautiful lasag I made him.

I know they’re no surprise lettuce cups, but Kyle’s a big fan of the queso, so he was happy.

Crazy about the ceiling! At least it was not all over all the beautiful food! Looks like a great night!

    So nice to meet you!

I read that book with my book club. Super depressing, but not as depressing as Shopaholic books.

  3. VeggieGirl

You met a great group of gals!! And thank goodness no one was hurt in the ceiling collapse.

What a fun evening! I told Heather that that scenario (almost identical) happened to my friend’s studio on the UES. Nuts!

Also, did you learn nothing from my explosion story last week?

Loved having you over — sorry that my apartment did not remain intact for the occasion!

And that seaweed + chickpea mix looks amaaaaaazing.

Tree Grows in Brooklyn is one of my favorites. 🙂

I’m so bad at keeping track of recipes! With lasagna, I usually just layer until I run out of ingreds, but I usually use 2 jars of sauce (I like the organic Newman’s), half skim ricotta, and shredded mozzarella. Sometimes I crumble bread crumbs into the various layers. For the pasta part, I use Buitoni. I had so much fun last night, we should definitely try to meet up more often. I’m so jealous youve been to Pure. I really need to go to there.

  14. emily

Oh my gosh! I can’t belive what happened to your bathroom!

Lovin’ all of the eats and the little explosion! haha

  15. Diana (Soap & Chocolate)

Haha, you chose an excellent title for this post. Very appropriate. 🙂 Have you tried the Trilogy flavor Kombucha? That’s my favorite! Gingerberry’s a close second, but it’s true that the explosion is hard to avoid sometimes. 🙁

So glad we got to hang last night! Must happen again.

  16. insideiamdancing

I read Heather’s post eralier- glad nobody got hurt! So cool that you got to meet everyone. Gena’s food looks incredible (as does yours…but that’s a given. Though hummus lacking- you okay?)

  17. Abby

What a fun shindig, minus construction collapses and all. I, too, want to go to there.

Have you thought about ordering Kombucha from your store by the case? I do that with tea and soy milk over here, and you get around 10 percent off…

  18. Courtney

Was that by any chance *homemade* seaweed salad mixed in with your chickpeas?!

I love A Tree Grows in Brooklyn…I haven’t read it in years–thanks for the reminder! I hope you like it!

Oh, and yesterday I had my first experience with chocolate grass and i’m IN LOVE!!!!!! Soooo good, gotta try adding greek yog to the mix next time!! Thanks for the idea, my HHH!

  22. sweetandnatural

So great to have met you! Last night was fun – minus the scary ceiling incident.

A Tree Grows In Brooklyn was my FAVORITE book in high school. Now I want to re-read it!
