12 hours of crazy

August 20, 2009 · 0 comments

Propofol, propofol, so much propofol.  And yet, no amount seemed too much.  I’m not exaggerating when I say this: I gave BEYOND lethal doses of sedatives today, and my patient was still so resistant he spent 12 straight hours trying to extubate himself.  Boy was my patience on trial with this guy.  Fentanyl, Propofol, Methadone, the list goes on and on…and these weren’t ordinary does either…these were kill-Michael-Jackson-and-his-entire-kid-entourage-doses.

OK, sorry for the work rant.  I sometimes use this blog to vent, so I ‘pologize for the medical chatter.  Back to what I really love to discuss – grubbin’!!!

IMG_3885

Since I was in the ICU today, I had nada snackage time.  My Starbucks java was IT until lunch time…which meant I downed errrrthang you see above in 3.7 seconds FLAT.  No bueno for the tum.

Want the deets?  Surely you do.

IMG_3877IMG_3884

Kale-face salad with my newest topping.  It’s hard to see, but in addition to the sesame seeds, there are CHIA seeds.  Much thanks to Greens+ for the yummy seeds.  Similar to flax seeds, these babies are good for you for a million different reasons, and yet unlike flax seeds, the benefits are available to the body without being ground or soaked.  This was the first of many ways I’m going to incorporate them into my eats.

Side note: is it just me, or is there something almost sexy about the curvy leaves of kale?  Love it.

IMG_3886IMG_3889

On top of the kale, chia & sesame seeds, I added broccoli slaw and raw corn.  And the best topping of all: SABRA’s classic hummus mini-tub.  Just wait, it gets better!  POP CHIPS!!  Second to hummus, these light, fluffy, HEALTHY carbs are the best addition to salads.  Hummus and pop chips and kale-face salad = HEAVEN :)

IMG_3888

New bar gracias a fiancé mio.  Not a huge fan of the Luna’s, but he tried, and it was a cute sentiment.  This was the best of the Luna bars that I’ve tried, but I still prefer Clif bars.  Luna’s are for girls pansies.

Long day with crazy patient = One Lucky Duck treat.  $15 is a far cheaper price to pay than a therapist, and that’s what we decided these indulgences are.

IMG_3890

These rosemary crackers are TOO good!  I took a pic before dumping it in a bowl and digging it…

IMG_3892

A bite of perfection.  Mmmm.

And then there was this…

IMG_3897

Times seven(ty five). I ate approx a pound of nuts (don’t laugh, I know the amount because I bought it from the bulk bins – aka purchases based on WEIGHT – aka I’m a fatty).  Sh!!T homes.  That’s not cool.  Don’t mistake my frustration with myself for self-loathing.  Trust, I’m not hatin’ – but it IS annoying that no matter how balanced I eat throughout the day, it always seems like the night-time brings out a ravenous beast in me.  Grrrr.

IMG_3580

Woops!  VeganRella cheddar slices may have made there way into my boca. ;)

Back to the grind tomorrow, but first, I’d like to say THANK YOU to everyone who commented on my blogiversary yesterday.  It was so nice to come home to a email box full of the sweetest comments.  You all really know how to make a girl feel the love.  :D

God bless you for the work you do. I’m sure you get thanks from family members and friends, but they are nowhere near enough. I hope that someday I have someone like you to care for me and my loved ones. Thank you. If I could send you a crapload of hummus I would.

I just bought my first tub ‘o chia seeds today from WF and made chia pudding. It’s chillin in the fridge right now but the flavor is excellent. Blogging bout it tomorrow. I did not knowy you could eat them raw, straight up on salads. Good tip that the health bennies are available immediately without having to be ground like flax, didnt know that.

I do not know how you do the work you do. God bless you. Seriously. Bless you, nurses are saints :)

Dont apologize about the work rant. Im a nursing major so the venting is very interesting to me.

Oh and I just bought the exact same jar of Chia seeds a few days ago…so far i has proven to be a wonderful oatmeal addition. I never thought about adding it to kale. I might just have to try that.

Hang in there with work, dear Elise!! I know how hard you DO work, and I’m praying that you can properly rest soon.

Hell yes for the S&M salad :-D

Mmm, that kale salad sounds yummy! And the One Lucky Duck salad is the bomb! I want one right now!!!

I just ate about 1/2 cup of pecans because I was hungry. Don’t worry about it, it’s all good!

I feel you on the work rant… it took exactly one point six seconds for me to get all riled up this morning. Rawwr!!

It never occurred to me to put PoPchips in a salad. Huh.

Umm…if I could make food as gorgeous as you do, then I think I’d eat everything you had today times twenty. The salads, the snackies (well, except the Luna bar ~ give me Laras any day!), the hummus…right, I’m starving now so thanks a lot ; )

You have every right to rant ~ your job sounds amazingly stressful and I think 90% of people wouldn’t even be able to hold it together in the situation you described.

Give yourself the credit you deserve beautiful!

You work in the cardiac ICU, right? What is up with the patients?! *I* have been a patient in the cardiac ICU before, and the LAST thing on my mind was trying to extubate myself, lol!

I have the same problem with nighttime snacking…it is like I cannot get enough! Grrr. It is quite annoying. I am sorry it is hard for you too, but glad to know I am not alone ;)

Rant away, lady, it’s your blog! I hope your next workday is better than this one was though. And don’t stress about the nut-feast (hehehehe). Better to take it easy on your bod for the next few days and take advantage of the FAB salads you know how to make! :)

I think after a day like that, I would be the one who needs the propofol.

I LOVE the PopChips in the sexy kale salad. That’s smrt! You get more satisfaction out of your WFs/One Lucky Duck purchases than therapists – that’s just my opinion. I’d rather eat my money than talk it away ;)

I hope work isn’t as crazy!! LOVES YOU! :D

Hey, at least you’re not using your food therapy to kill helpless animals. Vegan food fests are actually good for the environment – am I right?

And I echo Sarah Lovin, you’re amazing. Thanks for your hard work!

*hug*

Um am also an evening ravenous beast when it comes to eating. Picture perfect right up thru Din, and then the beast comes out, lol.

And girl, people need to lock up nuts and cheese around me. The amount I can consume is ugly.

are you sure you weren’t working at the zoo trying to sedate an elephant?! I am seriously impressed by how hard nurses work…kudos to you!

Now that you mention it, am looking at the kale and it kind of looks like frilly curtains to me!

Agree 100% on the Luna/Clif thing. One exception being the white chocolate macademia Luna- like an upscale rice crispy treat :D

now that you rant about work, i have no idea what you do! do tell? are you a nurse? your food therapy looks fabulous! especially that avocado. dude, cashews are addicting. we keep those costco sized jars here at work and the only thing that keeps me from eating the whole container is imagining the germs in there from whoever grabbed a handful last.. and even if their hands were clean, i imagine that they didn’t wash their hands after using the bathroom and that is enough to keep me away from the cashews. :)

I like to hear the work rants! I love listening to medical terminology – it usually puts me in a state of awe – like – “I could never do that!” :)

happy belated blogiversary! I’ve been a terrible commenter this week – but I promise I’ve been reading :)

Ugh, sorry for your bad day.

It’s so funny that you go to OLD for “therapy”… I’ve been doing that, too! I’ve only gotten their desserts, but I do it on the way to work to gear up for what will most likely be a crappy shift. Totally worth it.
