sorry if this is annoying (i can email you too)
he is all over the map in terms of feeding. he gets hungry without any real organized frequency (between 1 1/2 hours to 3 1/2). i dont know if its ok to let him go that long without food but i dont want to force him to breastfeed.
he is latched ans sucking between 10-20 minutes per feed. sometimes its alternating between breasts and sometimes its all from one. i just kinda let him go til he stops.
sometimes he waits 30ish minutes between breasts. i have started trying to do a diaper change between them because it wakes him up a bit and gets him ready to try the next breast, but again, i dont want to force feed him.
he had a projectile spit up yesterday with quite a bit of milk so im nervous that im pushing him too hard (we had a rocky start to breastfeeding since he as in the NICU and i couldnt hold him or feed him until day 2 – so we are still working things out, as are my boobs).
hes also not great at burping (aka im not great at burping him) so i have a hard time knowing how long to keep him upright and burping before either putting him down or switching breasts or whatever.
any help is appreciated!!
I’m happy to help! My quick reply is that it sounds like you’re doing great! It’s hard when you’ve been separated from your baby. No mommy wants that. Anyway, there is no “schedule” in the early days, and you can’t nurse too much. The “goal” is 8-12 feeds in 24 hours, but some babies will do more than that. I wouldn’t let more than 3 hours go during the day (you can let more go at night). Every 1-2 hours at this age is very typical. My babies did it every 45 minutes during the day, with some longer stretches when they slept. Breastmilk digests really quickly (that’s part of what makes it so healthy). I encourage you to nurse “on demand.” Keep the baby skin-to skin with you as much as possible, and as soon as he roots or looks for the breast, offer it. You can let him determine the length of a nursing session, and let him finish one breast before offering the other. You know things are going well when he’s got 3-4 good poops, and when he begins to start gaining weight. The spit-up is a good sign that your milk is in! No need to burp unless he’s uncomfortable. Most of all, trust him and trust yourself. Babies and moms are hardwired to breastfeed. It’s in your biology. I hope that helps. Feel free to email or call me! You’ve helped me so much with fodmap stuff and recipe – I’m happy to return the favor.
Wendy, I know I’m not qualified whatsoever to jump on your message here, but I had much success in my own breastfeeding experience because I had a lactation nurse who was as encouraging as you! She gave me the exact same advice – nurse on demand and don’t worry! The baby knows when he’s hungry. The idea of waiting until they cry is an old fashioned hands-off style that our moms were taught so they would ignore their instincts.
Elise, the only thing I would add is that you shouldn’t listen to anyone who tells you anything different than what Wendy said. Enjoy these first few months of nursing when there are no words needed, nothing but bonding – it goes by fast… way way way way too fast…..

Sounds like you’re doing great! Speaking from my own experience, of course, I think these little guys find a lot of comfort in latching on most of their waking hours. One of my favourite memories is dancing around the room in the wee hours of the night, to soft music with my little guy in my arms and yes, it goes by so very quickly.
