The end of the work weekend brings peace(food)

Sunday started much the same as Saturday, with the buzzzz of my alarm clock at 5 am.  Boo :(  At least I had all this deliciousness to look forward to…

Dried fruit (figs, mangoes), real fruit (apple), bars (TJ’s Trek Mix, Jocolat’s newest flavor – more below on that), pistachio/almond/goji mix, sabra mini-tub of hummus, and a huge GREEN BEAST of a salad.

IMG_3858

Cruciferous much?  Seriously, could there BE more green in this salad?  On top of the bed of spinach and the broccoli slaw was even more broccoli.  T’was perfection in the raw-est of forms.  Naturally, I smothered the damn thang in hummus and then almost made love to it (I eat my lunches in public after all).

German Chocolate Cake is the second new Larabar flavor I managed to get my hands on!  The thing is…I actually don’t like German Chocolate Cake.  So why did I think the bar would be good?  I have no clue.  Must be my latest exploration into the world of nuts.  I’m under a nutty spell!  Plus, after trying the new PB+J flavor (and falling head over heels in love with it), I would probably follow a trail of Larabars off the Brooklyn Bridge.  Vegan, raw, chocolate, what’s not to like?  Call me crazy, but this just wasn’t my favorite flavor.  I’m not quite sure what about it I didn’t like exactly.  It reminded me of the Amazing Grass SuperFood bar (which I also didn’t like).  Anyways, this was my first Jocalat bar.  Are they all chocolate flavors?  I hate to say it, but I think I prefer carob (gasp).

What’s your fave kind of bar? flavor?  Any recommendations would be much appreciated…

After I got off work, I called my bestie, Jess, and headed up town to meet her for dinner.  At least she doesn’t bail on me like some of my other friends.

Since we live in the same ‘hood and are both vegan, it’s only natural that we’ve hit up nearly every vegan spot on the UWS.  However, she’s been gone all summer long (in our native CA, lucky girl!) so she hadn’t yet been to the glorious vegan spot that is Peacefood cafe.

I knew she’d adore it just as much as I.  Because of it’s cozy, casual atmosphere and simple approach to food, it has edged out Blossom in my neighb dinner spots.

Jess got the ‘shroom Panini, pesto and soy cheese galore!

I got the other Caesar with EXTRA tempeh bacon and home-made croutons

IMG00251

Get this!  They didn’t even charge me for the extra “meat-y” topping!  Everything is so inflated in Manhattan, I feel like you have to pay for the air you breath in some New York restaurants, so this is my kind of place!

We chatted forever, catching up on the latest shenanigans in our lives, wedding planning, jobs, family, etc. then I headed home.

But not without stopping on the way home for some dessert 😉

All I wanted was my two front teeth fresh fruit.

Plums and bloobs.  Sweet and sassy – just like yours truly!

I am dying to try that flavor! I adore German Chocolate Cake! I’m surprised you don’t like it! Don’t you like coconut? Or am I totally making that up? I don’t know. Sorry, not enough coffee today.
At any rate, you can always send the leftover German Chocoalte flavors to a certain friend if you don’t want them 😉

  4. Shelby

I love all that salad action! So delicious!

  5. Courtney

That salad sounds divine! I love me some broccoli 🙂

And your dessert?! Can we just say fresh fruit = perfection in my book. It is my dessert every single night, and I will NEVER get sick of it! Ever! Last night I had cantaloupe and papaya and raspberries…yummmm…

Mmm those east from Peacefood look amaze!! 😉

  7. katherine

Yay for lots of delicious greens! I was so inspired by you last night that I skipped out on regular dressing and added a blob of spicy hummus to my salad greens. The Huz was so confused until I explained I’d learned about this in the mysterious blog world 😉

    Have a great day!

Jess has my kind of taste buds! Love the sandwich she picked!

  9. Kailey

Im so upset that my whole foods only had that german chocolate flavor – no new pb : I haven’t heard great things about the german chocolate flavor…

totally loving the huge tub of broccoli though!! cute blog 🙂

  10. Ada

I totally agree, I was NOT a fan of the new German chocolate cake Lara Bar. I really liked the tropical fruit tart and PB&J ones though!

That’s so funny, I live right by Peacefood but I have only tried a brownie from their bakery section which was really delicious! I am supposed to actually meet a friend there tomorrow night, though, so I can’t wait to try it!

  11. Missy Maintains

I’m not a fan of the Jocolate bars either. Chocolate Chip Z-Bars are still my favorite bar ever. Hmm Peacefood=another place to add on my “go to asap” list!

  12. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga)

I never tire of broccoli. Glad to hear I’m not the only brock lover! And your fruit looks awesome…that’s like a perfect peach. Or is it a nectarine? It looks juicy, sweet, and perfect.

PB and J Lara is the winner amongst Laras…catching up on old posts now and yes, the PB Pretzel Mojo rocks (PBJ Clif Dipped = magor gag factor…stay clear!) You tried the Heart Thrive bars? They seem popular (Westerley Market- we are GOING there in October!!!!!!)

  14. Diana (Soap & Chocolate)

You know, even though Jocalat bars sound like the best idea since slicedbreadImeanhummus, they keep falling short for me. I liked the German Chocolate Cake one fine, but it didn’t rock my face off. My mom had a bite and was like, yeah that’s a stretch, haha.

    Go back to PB&J. 🙂

  15. carolinebee

HA cruciferous….you are such a DWEEB and i love u 😀 That cafe sounds amazing- plus they don’t skimp on the extra’s what joy in life!

  16. Michal Mymo

I am currently trying to hunt that flavor down!
I have looked every where and I cant find it so im dissapointed, but im not giving up hope yet 🙂

I am a huge larabar fan, the cashew cookie is the best i love it!
Cliff bars are totally amazing too – not raw but the blueberry crisp is really filling and tastes like blueberry oatmeal!

  17. allijag

bloobs totally made me laugh – so something I would say 🙂

  18. lilveggiepatch

Yeah, I’m really not a fan of those Jocalat bars. I bit the GCC one, hated how bitter it was, and put it right back in the package. Whoopsies.

  19. blueeyedheart

Well… yes, all the Jocalat flavors are chocolate! I actually think I prefer them over the “regular” Larabars… but I didn’t try the German Chocolate Cake because I was a genius and read the ingredients list first… and I loathe coconut!

  20. janetha

mushrooms and pesto sandwiched between amazing bread? yes please. glad to hear you found a spot that gives you the hookup on the goods! i love fruit for dessert, usually over other stuff with added sugar (ice cream aside). i love how you are so prepared with your meals every day!

  21. elise

i cant think of anything better than a “letterbox” full of lara-love!! congrats on the find. now the real question is, are there any whole foods in the UK?

  22. elise

    type a = food prep 🙂

  23. elise

how can you not like coconut?!? i guess you havent tried the coconut cream pie flavor then? too bad, thats my FAVE. you can have my share of the jocalat bars if i can have your share of the PB+J ones?!

  24. elise

i agree, cashew cookie is SO good…as is the coconut cream pie. mmmm. i think blueberry clif is the best clif by far, it tastes like a blueberry cobbler or something. i think we have twin taste buds 🙂 good luck on the PB+J hunt. they are definitely hard to find.

  25. elise

haha, you KNOW you love it.

  26. elise

i LOVE coconut…its the walnuts or whatever nuts they use that im not a fan of…meh. i wouldnt kick it out of bed, but im sticking to the laras i know and love from now on (coconut cream pie, apple pie, cashew cookie and PB+J)

  27. elise

wow, raspberries sound frigging amazing right now. add banana soft serve into that combo and im there!

  28. elise

yes, hummus has not only taken over my salads, but it has basically infiltrated every dish i make now…lord help me once i start adding it to my fruit, though!

  29. elise

thanks kailey!! WF needs to get on top of it…PB+J laras are turning into such a cock tease!

  30. elise

i liked those z-bars but they werent big enough for me (twss)

  31. elise

hey neighbor! (i live on the UWS too) – peacefood is really great, you MUST go there. and (by NYC standards) their prices are very reasonable. cant wait to hear what you thought of it!

  32. elise

plum! and it was PERFECT! broccoli is such an underrated veggie. so good!

  33. elise

i agree with your momz, it was kinda sad, but atleast i have the PB+J to console me 🙂

  34. elise

shoot i bought a PB+J dipped last week that i have yet to try…ah well, cant all be winners i guess. havent seen the heart thrive bars yet (aside from on blogs). who makes them? we shall go on a hunt for them when you visit.

  35. blueeyedheart

No, I definitely did not try the coconut cream pie!! I was crushed to find that the key lime pie tasted like a coconut macaroon. :p And I think there are enough PB+J to go around… though I do have three languishing on my kitchen counter!! 😉
