Vital Vittles

This post is LONG overdue.  I’m coming clean.  As much as I adore Alvarado Street bread, I’ve been having a love affair with a local brand in Northern California, and every time I return home I’m reminded of my infidelity.

The farmer’s market near my dad’s work sells Vital Vittles and I can still recall the first day he brought them home way back when…

From my first soft doughy bite, I knew it was love.

Now my parents regularly stock them in the fridge (even though I like to think they are on extra supply when I’m visiting, I know that’s probably just my ego talking).

For the bread lovers in the Bay Area, do yourself a favor and find Vital Vittles asap.  They are 100% carbo-licious.

Here are the photos of them that have accumulated on my camera over time.

The outside is soft and yeasty and sweet and…indescribable.

They are good alone, or with hummus, or with melty Daiya.

When they are warm, they taste like they just came from the oven.

Recently I learned they have a raisin variety!

I wish photography conveyed flavor because the pics can only show so much.

Gooey raisins.

Do you have a favorite company near your hometown?  Any local brands you love?

My absolute fave sprouted grain bread is from Silverhills bakery out in Abbotsford, BC. I grab the squirrelly kind every time. Back home in Vancouver I could easily find them more affordable than out here in Toronto, although they do come in the frozen section. I miss them so much! I can’t wait to go back next summer.

That Vital Vittles rolls look sooooo good! Soft and chewy!

Those rolls look delicious…….I’ve found another brand of raisin rolls that are delicious..with cream cheese or peanut butter. Mmmm. Your melted Daiya looks delectable though!

Since I’m in NYC, practically every food brand started out here. 😉 I guess you could say H&H bagels before they closed, since they were practically my neighbor!

  9. Mary @ Bites and Bliss

Those rolls look so good! 🙂 My favorite bread company is definitely Food for Life or Alvarado St. There aren’t really any good local breads in my area that I have heard of. Gotta love Nebraska *sarcasm*. lol.
