About Elise

I’m a nurse. An exercise lover. A whole foods connoisseur. A health enthusiast. And I have IBS. No need to cue the sappy violin music yet... I’ve found that eating a mostly plant-based diet has allowed me to continue to live and love life to the fullest. Although moderation isn’t something I do well, I’m 100% devoted to giving my body pure, wholesome, quality food. Nutritious and delicious, all the time. Hungry Hungry Hippie is a way for me to share my daily dealings with food, fitness, and everything in between.

Breakfast struggles

I don’t know what happened but sometime mid-week I lost my breakfast appetite.  It is the weirdest thing.  I wake up hungry, but then I work out so my stomach falls asleep or something.  And then I make tea and feed P and wait for my body to feel like food…and it takes a LONG TIME!  So bizarre.  Usually my breakfast cravings are my strongest.  It’s my favorite meal after all. I only ate eggs two days this week!  It’s like I’m teething too.  [P has had a mediocre appetite as well thanks to what is… Read more >

The weekly menu

I haven’t posted anything substantial in a while because I keep forgetting to take photos of my meals.  Isn’t it weird that NOT capturing my food on camera is my abnormal?  It used to be second nature.  Oh to be a food blogger… I assure you I am still eating.  In case you had your doubts. This week started off with lots of seafood dinners.  P loves fish and shrimp so they are always winners to make. Backing up to last weekend, my mom made salmon with a mustard sauce, which we served over quinoa, sautéed chopped spinach,… Read more >

Ketchup post

This post will have zero to do with ketchup, I’m just in a weird mood. Let’s CATCH UP. Desserts are all I want to make this time of year.  I need a good [but EASY] fudge recipe that doesn’t involve condensed milk.  Anyone?  Also, why does every brittle recipe require a candy thermometer.  I am not going to do that, but I want brittle.  Dilemmas. Ok, so real food. Ha.  Still not quite the “real” food I was hoping to get to.  But Costco just started carrying these for about half the price they usually are, so… Read more >

Lemon Poppyseed Bundt Cake

When we moved to this house, one of the (many) selling points was the backyard with so much gardening and planting potential.  There were fairly new citrus trees which my mom helped me prune and care for (because there were several diseased parts on them) and now that it’s winter they are bearing so much fruit!  We have lemons galore! [Side note: we were told there were two lemon trees and one lime tree, but I texted a photo to my mom last month to ask what was wrong with the lime tree (they were turning… Read more >

Random food things

Kyle was out of town the week before I went to NYC so I ate the same thing for lunch and dinner for four days in a row.  I am a creature of habit and thanks to the leftovers from Thanksgiving at my parents’ house, I had turkey for days. P was over the turkey by day two though. I took a few pics, but I can assure you there were plentyyyyyy more I didn’t photograph. I made a mayo/cranberry sauce chutney of sorts to eat with the turkey since I didn’t have gravy.  That and avocado… Read more >
