The latest lunch boxes

Sometimes Kyle has lunch meetings and sometimes he’s home for breakfast so what I pack for him varies.  I just ask him about his schedule the night before and what meals he wants.   Last week I made a bunch of breakfast burritos for Kyle.  I assembled them and rolled them up in foil all at once so I could just throw them in his lunch box the night before.  So easy. I am seriously sorry about the photos, but there’s only so much you can do with an iphone at 9 pm.  For the… Read more >

My highlights: week 7

Mama’s little helper.   The addition of shoes to the wardrobe has transformed him into a little boy.  He’s non-stop exploring.  Still not walking, but he’s perfected his cruising skills, so it’s only a matter if time (days). Green toys.  And now the word tractor is a part of his vocab.  Davis appropriate. Inspired by Vintage Mixer’s kale coconut & chicken salad I made this guy for lunch.  I have been struuuuuggling with lunches lately.  I don’t know what to eat without soy or nuts or hummus.  I’ve been trying to limit meat to… Read more >

Omni meal plans

I’ve been keeping up with weekly meal planning for almost a year now – with random weeks off due to travel/holidays/etc..  But for the most part, it’s been a very successful technique in keeping our food budget in check.  I thought it would be way more expensive once we started including meat, but it hasn’t been too significant of a difference because the marginal increase in animal protein is balanced by the fact that we all eat the same thing (thus, a decrease in overall ingredients).  One meal as opposed to three.  At least for… Read more >

Lunches in bowls

My lunches fall into 2 categories: repetitive/boring or the previous night’s dinner (occasionally re-vamped).  Here are some of my latest.  Plus a few other quickie recipe reviews that I figured I may as well pass on since they were successful and yummy.  Moroccan salad with cilantro orange dressing by pinch of yum.  I subbed quinoa for the farro, but otherwise made the recipe exactly as written.  It was a big time winner.  I loved the bright tangy orange notes and the sweet dates combined with the pistachios.  Glad our neighbors have an orange tree because… Read more >

Lemon!

You have to say that like Jack Donaghy.  Oh 30 Rock, I miss you. I really don’t crave lemon too often.  Especially in winter.  Citrus seems summery to me, despite the fact that all the orange and lemon trees in our neighborhood are just now bursting with fruit.  Anyway, I picked a few lemons from our neighbor’s tree because I was in the mood for lemony things.  I swear my brain thinks up all the best recipe ideas in the late night hours as I lie in bed trying to fall asleep.  [Which is actually… Read more >
