Kids podcasts

Occasionally I post on Instagram stories about the podcasts we (me + the kids) listen to and I always get so many questions about it, so I figured I’d write out a quick list of some of their favorites.

I’m pretty picky about what I let my kids have access to, so these are all pretty well vetted in terms of content, language, etc.

Science

WOW in the World
-This was our first kids podcast we ever listened to and so it is near and dear to our hearts. P likes it more than V, but he’s generally more into podcasts so I don’t think it has as much to do with the subject. Guy Raz and Mindy are hilarious and they have the kids laughing all the time. Some of the stuff goes over their heads (it’s probably best geared to 5+ aged kids) but I’m a firm believer in not dumbing things down for kids. Even if they understand a fraction of it, that’s better than nothing, right? It’s plenty entertaining even if you don’t get that they are sneaking in a discussion of a research study in every episode.

But Why

Brains On
-In both of these, kids submit questions and scientists answer them. Some are better than others (some are for slightly older kids).

Animals

Cool Facts About Animals
-Sometimes this one drives me bonkers, but the kids love it. A mom and her kids pick an animal each week and (as the name of the podcast suggests) discuss various facts about said animal. If you have a kid who is obsessed with animals and loves memorizing facts about them, this is the podcast for you. As an adult listening, sometimes the kids are annoying to me, but my kids think they are the funniest, so there’s that.

Species
-Each week, this podcast teaches you about a new animal. These are a bit longer (20-30 minutes) so I pick them when we have longer stretches of time.

Story Spectacular

Little Stories for Tiny People
-Full disclosure: I can’t tell these three story telling podcasts apart. That said, both kids LOVE them. Unlike the rest of the podcasts, I can’t stand these ones (mainly because they are TOO sweet, it’s like syrup on syrup), so I put them on when I won’t be listening (ie in the double stroller when I’m on a run). They are shorter (on average 8-12 minutes), so great for quick trips around town.

Storynory

the Alien Adventures of Finn Caspian
-This podcast is basically a book on tape. It has multiple seasons and is an ongoing story about Finn Caspian, an 8 year old boy who lives on an international space station. He explores galaxies to solve mysteries and it’s captivating. P loves it and would listen for hours on end during his quiet time. The episodes are longer and unlike other podcasts you need to pay attention, so you need a decent chunk of time and (if you have a kid who is really intently focused) a setting that isn’t full of other family members talking.

Circle Round
-Classic tales and fables from other cultures. A big time favorite in our house.

Stories Podcast

Other

Noodle Loaf
-This is BY FAR the best podcast for both kids (aged 4 and 6) right now. It has interactive content – rhyming games, repeat after me songs, free style music options, clapping challenges, etc. They are actually learning through play and – an added bonus – it’s fun for me to play along too. Each podcast is different and the theme song is super catchy, we find ourselves singing it all day long. And then we make up our own versions of the games throughout the day too. Highly recommend!

Kids Bible Stories
-Both kids LOVE this podcast, especially V. The host has such a warm nice voice, I also love to listen. And I’ve picked up some awesome (therapy like) lessons too! The multi-part series (ie Ruth) are their favorites and they always ask if the next installment has come out yet throughout the week.
