Let’s get physical

I started the day with a raging headache.  WTF?!  No fair >:(

IMG_4354IMG_3655

Nothing a little caffeine couldn’t fix, right?  Wrong.  So, I pulled out the big guns Excedrin and distracted myself with brekkie until the meds kicked in.

Food = happy hippie.  Not the most inspiring meals.  Sorry.

I did make a fabulous lunch to make up for it, though.  Dave’s Killer Bread (I’m down to my last slices, eek!), CAKED with tofummus, spinach, and LightLife’s Smart Deli “turkey.”

IMG_4356IMG_4358

CAKED I tell ya…

IMG_4359

See it and weep.

After my tummy was satisfied, I decided to go on a jog through Riverside park.  It was great except my iPod died 15 minutes into it (HATE that).  Otherwise the weather was perfect and because I was along the water Hudson River, I could almost pretend I was back on the west coast, running on the Santa Monica oceanfront – those were the days…Ok, I said almost, let’s not get carried away though, it was still polluted murky nastiness with the remains of the Sopranos’ enemies deep down in the abyss.  Despite my iPod issues, I kept going for a few more miles, but basically turned around early to finish out my distance day in the gym.  I wanted to get in 10 miles, so figuring I did 4 outside, I pushed through 6 more and headed home.

I was HANGRY when I got back to the apt.  So guess what I popped open?!?  Almond butter!!  Can you believe the only almond butter I’ve ever tried is Barney Butter (sample packs).  Crazy talk, right?

Well, if you’ve been reading for a while (or know me in real life) you know why.  I’m only recently a nut convert.  I have literally gone all 26 years of my life hating detesting, nuts.  I’m still on the fence with most of them, but almonds are in the clear (for now).  So obviously I was skeptical about jumping on board the almond butter train.  After consulting a few reliable experts in the nutbutter realm, I decided to begin my almond adventures with Naturally More.  I am happy to report, this was a GRAND success :)  After I covered every friggin’ millimeter of the slice of DKB, I licked the knife off…then re-dipped it, and then licked it again…and, yeah, maybe repeated that a few more times.  Dare I say it?  This may have been better than peanut butter!

IMG_4322IMG_4331

I also bulleted myself (yes, it’s now a verb) a protein shake.  Jay Robb, frozen cherries, NuNaturals vanilla extract, ice, milk.  Slosh slosh slosh.

I didn’t mean to get stuffed before PT, but the last thing I wanted was a growling stomach while getting my neck and back re-aligned.  That’s the worst, right K?

I set off extra early because (a) I’m an overly punctual freak and (b) I wanted to stroll through Central Park on the way.  I was a little slower than I anticipated (gotta stop and smell the roses play on the swings), so I took the bus downtown once I got to the East Side.  It all went lovely.  I think my PT is GREAT and even though this was just the intro sesh, he showed me exercises, stretched me out, reviewed posture/positions with me…lots of good stuff.

I happily headed home feeling looser (minds out of the gutter now) and looking forward to more sessions.  Yay!

Dinner was thrown together at lickety-split-speed because I got home later than I thought I would (and I still had laundry and sh!t to get done).

Health is Wealth has never failed me thus far, so when I saw this new product in the store I decided to give it a shot.  Not too bad in the nutritionals either.

Vegan Stone Ground Whole Wheat Breaded Patties

Pros: They tasted just like I expected them to.  Sometimes you just crave that sodium loaded fake nugget flava!  They were easily heated to crispy perfection – the breading was crunchy and the inside had the texture of a big patty (not soggy or limp).  YUM!

Cons: Sodium sodium sodium.  I think I got a week’s worth of salt in each patty.

I decided to make a mexi-themed meal.  First I made a salad with black beans, raw corn, and red bell peppers.

IMG_4299

Then I added the chopped up vegan chik’n and a dollop of greek yogurt on top (playing the sour cream roll).

IMG_4303

Delish!  After my food coma wore off, I started my PM routine (set out work clothes, pack lunch, laundry, DESSERT).  What do you do in your PM routine?  Do you have one?

IMG_4372

Apple, mango, and strawbz, oh my.  What a great 9/9/09!

Somehow I’m thinking that a crossword puzzle might not be the best of buddies with a headache! 😉

I’m a nut hater too! Of sorts. And I don’t like almond butter, either. Sigh.

I’ve definitely seen things worse on the sodium front… however, I’m trying not to think about it. (I think I took it a little too literally when a doctor once told me I should probably up my sodium intake because I had low blood pressure. Clearly a crazy man, because if he only knew how much sodium I ingest…)

Ideal PM routine involves falling into bed!!!!!!

I found your blog a couple weeks ago and have really been enjoying reading it! I like seeing how/what you eat during your long shifts because I have to do the same thing (i’m finishing up school for physical therapy). Your meals always look great and have given me some good ideas!

And I’m glad to hear your PT appt went well today. Hope you’re feeling better soon!

  3. elise

no no, i beg to differ. crosswords soothe me 🙂 you might say im a bit of an oddball, but i prefer “unique” i am quite the sodium lover too…i dont keep track of the #s for a reason (it would be VERY alarming)

  4. lilveggiepatch

Hope you’re feeling better, love pie! Also. You NEED to try Maranatha roasted creamy almond butter (or, better yet, the TJ’s version that is $3-4 cheaper). I’m addicted!

I ate a whole glob of hummus in one bite today and thought of you.

  5. broccolihut

Well that tofummus sandwich looks pretty epic, and YAY FOR HEALTH IS WEALTH. I discovered their chik patties in high school, and they’re pretty much the only kind I buy. I like that their breading is whole grain.

  6. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga)

Oooh that little mexi theme looks pretty darn tasty! If you dont like nut butter (and really I am not a huge fan of nut butters…but….) I do love me my latest addiction, which is sunflower seed butter which I Was blogging ad nauseum on last week. This week I’m giving away chia seeds and stevia so been blogging nonstop on that and the seed butter’s restin’ a bit but I heart it.

My P.M. routine? Jesus, I have to clean my kitchen, get my child cleaned, bathed, fed, bedded, pack my husband’s lunch, pack my child’s snack pack, lay out my workout clothes for tomorrow, upload some blog photos, try to take 37 seconds to myself, and that’s just in the hours of 10pm to 11pm or give or take…it’s all about the fam once you take that plunge 🙂

  7. Andrea

I am so sad that you DKB love is coming to an end. Hopefully he’ll be in N CA soon so that you can at least partake when you’re home!
Can I say that you are such a freak for just now “tolerating” nuts?!

  8. The Foodie Diaries

Is it weird that I’m not a vegetarian and I like those fake chicken patties but not real ones? Probably, but I go with it. Your salad looks amazing!

  9. The Voracious Vegan

That sandwich looks awesome! And that black bean salad – yum! Well, my evening routine is to ride my horse, walk my dogs, fix dinner, and lounge in front of the tv or cuddle up next to my hubby and watch a good movie. Our evenings are simple and quiet, just the way I like them!

  10. ohsnapitsMegan

I know that you like hummus a lot, but have you ever had baba ganoush? I like it so much better than hummus (but I do enjoy it). Also, I found a black bean spread that kicks them both out of the water… the name has left me, but I”ll find it and tell you.

Oh, I think your blog is wonderful. I’ve just made the convert to healthy food/life adventures and you’re such an inspiration.

  11. ksgoodeats

Dude, I’ve been getting the AM headaches these past two days – I feel your pain. What’s up with that?!

Alright my veggie expert – which is better, tofurkey or lightlife? I’ve only had tofurkey so I was wondering how lightlife compares.

Mmmm almond butter! Glad you converted! Grumbly tummies are THE WORST – I was pushing on mine during class to try to get it to shut up yesterday 🙂

Glad you had a good PT sesh! I forgot to tell you but my aunt is a nurse and she just had back surgery – made me think of you! I’ve got to try those chik’n patties, love the breading!! I also love that mexi-bowl. Have a good Friday, boo!!

  12. insideiamdancing

Glad PT went well 😀 I’ve never had Health is Wealth but sometimes the sodium laden fake meat stuff is needed. I am new to nuts too (TWSS!) and LOVE almond butter- I first tried it a couple of months ago and it’s awesome 😀 I can’t pick between AB and PB though…

PM routine = putting everything off until the next morning. Morning routine = rushing around like a maniac kicking myself for not doing things the night before. C’est la vie.

  13. Courtney

10 miles?! You rock! You gotta love gettin your sweat on, right?!

I have never tried any of the Health is Wealth products…maybe I will have to check them out for those super busy days?

    Courtney

  14. julie

you ARE training for the queens halfsies aren’t you! ugh I am registered for it but since I ripped my hip I haven’t been able to run. fail. I was really looking forward to it and now my moneies are down the drain.

yeaaah AB! ugh Naturally More Almond Butter is probably insanely amazing if it’s anywhere near as close to being the utter perfection that NMPB is.

  15. Gena (Choosing Raw)

I love Health is Wealth! AND I love that summery looking salad. 🙂

  16. dee (the apple hill adventurer)

wowza girl! thats sandwich looks awesome. tofummus huh? that made me “lol” literally.

  17. Haleigh

The mexi meal looks great! My PM routine consists of a bath and a book about an hour before bed otherwise I can never get to sleep! I am recent almond butter convert and I am never going back!! I love the stuff!

  18. Lara (Thinspired)

Those chicken free patties look pretty good! Too bad about the salt.
This is bad, but I usually waych a light-hearted TV show before bed. It helps me fall asleep because I’m not worried or scared about anything. Right now I’m loving Two and a Half Men. 🙂

  19. jenngirl

LOVE that caked tofummus sandwich, it looks gloriously creamy and delicious 🙂

Glad you finally jumped on the AB wagon, although better than peanut butter?? Let’s not get hasty…

I love my PM routine…dinner, clean-up kitchen, lay out clothes, put on pjs/get ready for bed, get INTO bed, read until I start dosing, SLEEP!

  20. janetha

ugh a dead ipod while working out is SUCH a downer for me. sorry about the headachey start, but dang that DKB sandwich is enough to make any troubles go away. i am hoping i can find that bread in seattle next weekend! my night routine changes day to day.. depending on the day.. but today is friday so it will be to relax! hope you have a great weekend 🙂

  21. elise

Oo so jealous that you’re going to Seattle. Have a blast and DEF find som dkb!!

  22. elise

Thanks for the sweet comment! Its nice to know that you (or anyone) cares about what I pack in my lunches…let alone gets inspiration from it. What we do is difficult to plan meals around so if you have any ideas that work feel free to leave a comment!

Oh and thanks again for reading 😉

  23. elise

If I ever made it to TJs on a day that didn’t have an 8 mile long line I’d be all about it. That day has yet to arrive though.

  24. elise

i LOVE health is wealth. i used to be a boca girl, but theirs have better nutritionals (which is oh-so-important when you are stuffing your face with frozen junk food).

  25. elise

i’ve never tried sunflower seed butter…yet! im only recently dabbling in the nutbutter world myself actually. but can i just give you MAYJ props for your PM routine. holy SH!T you are one amazing woman. seriously, i cant even begin to express my awe at all you do. averie = modern day wonder woman!

  26. elise

i know…its scary to say you are an anti-nut person in the blog world. its not exactly “normal” – but then i have never really fallen in that category…

  27. elise

    haha, nope!

  28. elise

wow. any PM routine that includes horses is 100% NOT simple, haha. sounds awesome.

  29. elise

usually when i get headaches its from my lack of caffeine. so it was weird to have a headache that wasnt caused by that.

i have done the tummy push before to shut it up, haha. arent we (the bio nerds) supposed to know that simply kneading our stomach is no way to shut up the growlings?

  30. elise

yeah…if you can even use the word “training”
i have signed up for it, and might be going, although i gotta say, the visits from my sisters really threw a wrench in my training runs. plus now im sick and not really feeling it. AT ALL.

  31. elise

man, i miss being able to take a bath. as much as i clean and bleach the bejeezus out of our shower, you couldnt pay me to take a bath in it. im not so sure why that is…but until i buy my own house with a bath that NOBODY has stepped foot in besides me, ill save the bath bubbles. it sounds ridiculously relaxing though…

  32. elise

ha, ok ok. sometimes i DO get carried away…

  33. elise

thanks so much for the comment! im glad you are enjoying the blog, and it is beyond flattering that you consider me an inspiration!

oddly enough i dont think ive ever had baba ganoush?! i see it all the time right next to the hummus. it’s eggplant right? let me know if you remember the black bean spread company. hope you keep reading 🙂
