I was suffering for most of the day yesterday.

Ironically enough, I was just exclaiming last week how great it was that I finally stopped getting migraines.  Spoke too soon, eh?

I tried to fight it.

image

I pounded water by the glass.

image

I even resorted to medications.

In the end though, I couldn’t fight the pounding in my head.

I crawled into bed after lunch and passed out.

image

I slept until 5:15 pm (!!) [when the babies woke up from their nap, so did I].

I still felt like death so I had another glass of water and went back to sleep.

I woke up again at 6:15 pm and called Kyle on my cell phone (he was in the next room) and begged him to run to the store for me.

I was pretty nauseous and what I craved was nowhere in the house.

image

I wanted the aspartame.

But the throbbing in my head persisted, and I couldn’t even fathom how to make it better.  Isn’t it funny how you can be nauseous and hungry at the same time?  Very conflicting.

And then Kyle mentioned one word that instantly made my heart sing:  SUSHI!

I knew immediately that’s exactly what I needed…and so take-out sushi it was.

Prior to Kyle’s stroke of genius, I was seriously drawing a blank when brainstorming dinner options.  Try as I might to come up with something that sounded appetizing, I was at a loss.  His sushi suggestion was like pure brilliance.  Such a relief.

IMG_1257

My only request when they went to get the food was for extra ginger (I love the ginger they give with sushi).

I was too sick to even think about what I wanted to eat.  And so, for the first time in a VERY long time, I relinquished control with the food (when it comes to ordering out that’s SO unlike me!). To be honest though, deep down I knew Kyle would choose exactly what I would want.

Seriously, soy sauce has never tasted so amazing.  Salt was just what the doctor ordered.

I started with miso soup.

IMG_1255

No joke, the second it touched my lips I began to feel better.  Mmmmm.

Up next was seaweed salad.

IMG_1252

Yes please!  How well does my beau know me?  I’m fairly certain that he knows me better than I know myself.  Trace minerals never tasted so good.

Then came the rolls.  Rolls and rolls of rolls.

IMG_1249

We got two California rolls, and I demolished one all by myself.  Oh, California, you just know how to make me swoon.

IMG_1256

Kyle worked on his bento box while I set in on the next roll.

IMG_1247

This roll was almost as good as the California roll.  Almost.  The only thing was the white stuff drizzled on top.  And since I wasn’t entirely sure about the “special” sauce on this bad boy, I tried my best to avoid it…kinda.  The truth is, after feeling SO damn crappy all day, any potential GI woes were secondary in my mind to the pleasure I was finally feeling while eating dinner.

IMG_1246

We ordered two of these rolls as well and I took down more than my fair share.

IMG_1248

And finally there was the asparagus roll.  This was a simple roll (which is a polite way of saying boring) with nothing but steamed asparagus and rice.  Sometimes these plain rolls are my faves, but not when I hadn’t eaten for most of the day.

Between shoveling rolls in my mouth, I polished off a quarter pound of ginger too.  Can’t get enough of that stuff.  Does anyone know if you can you buy that pickled ginger stuff in stores?

IMG_1261

Game over.  Impressive no?  Apparently when Kyle and his mom picked up the order the server asked if they were having a party.  Nope, this was just for the three of us.  She kinda laughed nervously, unsure if they were being serious or not.  I suppose she’s never a hungry hungry hippie feast before.  For the record, the sushi was from U-Mi Asian Bistro, which I previously blogged about.  It only recently re-opened after burning down a while ago and it’s already the town’s hot spot (which is a relative term in this tiny-a$$ farm town, but still).

I felt fantastically full by the end of the meal.  By the time I went to bed, my head was almost normal.  It’s now our last day in Lynden…off to Seattle tomorrow!!

Do you have a favorite meal when you are sick?  I realize GI issues are a whole different battle, buy what about non-stomach ailments?  Do you get/have you ever gotten migraines?

You can usually find sushi ginger at just about any super market in the “asian” food section.. not that I have any idea about Cali- but I know the Whole Foods in my area has it as well.. You can always hit up an asian market, it will definitely be there- and a whole lot cheaper too!

I have stomach issues often.. in fact I’m going to get tested for food allergies.. so I know for sure what gives me troubles. Other wise- I’m just clumsy and I’m constantly hurting myself, which granted is not the same as a migraine since it can be prevented. But in my case I think it’s something I can’t avoid!

I love sushi! It looks great 🙂 Ever have a sweet potato roll?!

Sorry to hear about your migraines! That sucks. Sorry I have no tips. My issues are all GI and I’m currently recovering from a viscious glutening, no fun.

I love Seattle, hope you have a great time xxx

I’m so sorry about your migraine – I get them too, no fun at all! But sushi definitely makes everything better! I ordered some the other day when I was feeling down and they included two sets of chopsticks with my order and extra ginger and wasabi .. for the nonexistent dinner date? Nope, sorry, all for me!

And yes, you can get the pickled ginger at grocery stores. I’ve seen it at WF and regular grocery stores in the Asian aisle/section – in jars or plastic packages near the nori and wasabi!

Sorry about your migraine. I get them, too, and rather frequently. I’ve given up trying to fight them without my prescription. When I get one, I crave fat and protein. I’ll usually turn to cheese pizza or an Asian tofu dish. I always want hot food. I try to make myself have something with lots of magnesium, but often I’m just scrounging to find something that doesn’t sound repulsive. I’m glad you’re better!

We got takeout sushi last night too… I got 3 of the same, avocado/mushrooms rolls that are soooooo ridiculously amazing. You must try them the next time you get sushi!!!

Anyhoo…. hope you feel better soon!

I get mini migraines from time to time and can’t eat anything when they strike! I’m a big cracker girl when I do get sick though – give me some Saltine’s or Ritz and I’m in heaven.

    Hope you’re feeling better, boo!

Um you are twenty million times more adventurous than I am when I’m sick! If I am super nauseous the only thing I can stomach is plain salted crisps and a gatorade. Ha. Pretty sure sushi wouldn’t be on the agenda but that does look awesome – I’ve been craving sushi/miso soup all week!

You definitely can buy pickled ginger in stores, in either Asian markets or the Asian aisle of the grocery store. I don’t know why I don’t eat it more often!

  9. Duly Quoted

LOL–i buy pickled ginger by the pound online at http://www.asianfoodgrocer.com and at asian grocery stores (if you come through portland again, GO TO FUBONN ON 82ND AND DIVISION. it’s incredible)…you can get it in jars (for a much higher price) at WF and other similar groceries as well! it’s amazing stuff for upset tummies…and just eating straight up…all the time…

Hope you’re feeling better! I’ve had migraines my whole life from stress, MSG, and other food additives. I take Maxalt and anti-inflammatories. They’ve been a lifesaver! I also sleep with ice on my head when I have them and that helps a lot.

We’re also going through a weird allergy period so a lot of people are getting allergy headaches, but if you didn’t have pressure in your sinuses then it was probably just a regular stupid migraine.

    Safe travels!

Glad you are feeling better – sushi makes everything better, I swear it has healing powers! I love pickled ginger too – you can buy it in Asian markets!

I’m sorry about your migraines : ( I have been getting them my whole life as well. Tried everything, prescrips, excedrine migrane, you name it.

I found if i really limit artificial sweeteners I can handle them a bit more.

Also, sounds crazy, but when they do hit, I use ice packs on the soles of my feet. Brings a little relief.

    Take care!

i swear to you sushi is the cure to all. actually seaweed salad is gods gift to when your brain hurts and you can’t think.

hope you are GI and brain pain free today girl 🙂

Hey there, So glad to hear you’re feeling better. I was also fighting a migraine this weekend and there’s nothing quite like sleep to help out when it gets to a certain point. I used to have frequent migraines and chronic daily headache… it is actually what led me to now eating a gluten-low diet as I’ve found that helps a lot (for me). Sometimes the meds work, sometimes they don’t… Luckily I’m starting to realize if I am getting super irritable that a migraine is coming on and to start avoiding all triggers.
In terms of food… I totally get the nauseous but hungry thing – and sometimes just eating something makes you feel just the slightest bit better. I always end up with frozen yogurt because that’s something I can eat just about any time of the day, every day (I wish). I also surround myself with lavender, mint, and ginger. You can definitely buy ginger in the store – especially now since you’ll be in SoCal I would recommend that you hit up Ranch 99.

aw you poor thing, i’m glad the sushi helped!!! i can demolish an embarrassing number of rolls too, don’t feel badly 🙂

and YES, stores do sell that ginger! ive even seen it in world market (aka the best store ever).

My favorite meal when I’m sick (with a cold/headache) is spicy Chinese cuisine. But since I have GI issues (as you do), it’s a tricky task finding a Chinese place that’s of high enough quality to not upset my poor gut (that doesn’t use MSG/whatever other ungodly preservatives a lot of Chinese restaurants seem to use). The heat from chili and the brown rice tea really seem to open me up, though. Genmaicha is really good for headaches in general…and for feeling grounded in the tummy. It’s my go-to anxiety tea. 🙂

Another favorite trick of mine (not for headaches, but for GI issues) is eating Indian food. It’s not even slightly difficult to find vegan dishes at Indian restaurants, and the dishes usually contain an abundance of spices that help digestion (mustard seed, cumin, cardamom, cinnamon, coriander, nutmeg, etc, and turmeric for inflammation).

Sorry about your dreadful migraines!! Hope you’ve gotten it out of your system. Have fun in Seattle!
