Rabbit rabbit!

February is my second favorite month (after October of course) because of it’s heart healthy theme.

So happy February 1st! [and rabbit rabbit]

Back before the blog, I started my mornings like this every single day.

Me + coffee + crossword.

All through undergrad and nursing school it was the only way I woke up.  Once I moved to NYC and started working, the real world took over, and my AM “me” time somehow got sidelined.  It’s a little sad.

Well this morning was different and it made me happy.  No tv.  No computer.  Just me, my caffeine, and my newspaper stained hand.

IMG_5942

Still almost got it.

I nearly forgot to take a picture of my buttered (Earth Balance-d?) bread.  Not exactly a gourmet breakfast, but I was keeping things real simple because all brain power was going to the crossword.

IMG_5943

I had a real breakfast later on though.  But I ate this at 1 pm, so it’s not very accurate to call it breakfast.  Yeah, I slept in a LOT.  Don’t judge.

Toast x2

Earth Balance x3

Eggs x2

Seriously, I feel so lame for posting this because it’s not innovative or interesting or anything, but whatever.

I took these pictures because eating buttered bread is such an anomaly for me.  I typically prefer nut butter on toast and reserve plain butter for baking.  Also, I usually buy the soy free Earth Balance, but this time I got the olive oil one and I may like it even more.

IMG_5946

The meal was good, but weirdly I wasn’t even hungry enough to finish it.  Not sure what’s wrong with me.  So I saved one egg for later.

IMG_5944

The toast is the best part anyway.

I spent the rest of the day making food.  [To be shown later]

And then I went for a run.  [Girl look at that body…I work out]

And then I attempted to figure out my Nike+ app. [I really don’t get it]

IMG_5941

I’m an iPhone newbie, but all I can manage to figure out is twitter.  I’m really revealing my true colors in this post.  Apparently I’m an octogenarian who enjoys sleeping in, doing crosswords, sipping coffee, and shunning new technology.  Sweet.

But for reals, I can’t figure out how Nike+ works.  I do love the WF recipes app though.  It’s pretty clever the way it generates a grocery list for you from the recipe ingredients and you can search recipes based on dietary preferences (vegan, GF, dairy free, low sugar, wheat free, etc.) or kinds of meals.  It also figures out what dishes you can make based on what food you have on hand.  If only it cooked for you too…

IMG_5995

This new tofu recipe (that I found on the WF app) is evidence that digital media is taking over the world.  Soon there will be no need for book stores at all.  [That’s a nice story Grandma]

So.

Who saw last night’s Glee?  Love me some MJ.  Kyle won’t let me post the proof, but trust me, his moon walk is fantastic.  Anyway, I probably mentioned this at some point on the blog, but I was a band geek.  And I’m still a complete music nerd.  So yeah, I was pretty damn impressed by the Smooth Criminal cello show down.  The actual plot lines of the episodes are less than amazing, but I won’t bother going there.  I watch Glee for the music not the “drama” anyway.

Favorite spread for toast?  Butter, nut butter, jam…

Anyone else with musical backgrounds?  Instrumental or theater?

Favorite apps?

Bread and butter is one of those simple things that just make me so happy!

  2. Natalcho @ Tomatoes Rock

I love MJ too! I will make sure I watch the Glee episode tonight. I was always a huge fan and always dreamt of seeing him live. So when he announced the concert dates in London I was convinced this was destiny – back then I lived 10 minutes away from the O2 arena! So I spent 5 hours online on the day they started selling tickets and despite the fact that the website crashed for most of the 5 hours I managed to get two tickets in the second row in the middle, right in front of the stage. We all know how that ended…Sniff.

Mmmm your breakfast looks tasty! My favorite spread is usually nut butter, too, but avocado and hummus are up there as well.
I played the clarinet all through high school, as well as the piano for 12 years 🙂

    looooooooooove earth balance slathered toast!!!!!!

looooooooooooooove your white iphone (i have an obsession with white iphones and macs actually (weird, i know!))…unfortunately i have a black one.

anywho…i finally got around to making a seitan log last night, and it’s amazing…so today for lunch i made myself a hippie bowl…thanks for the idea!!!

enjoy your day…it sounds like it’s turning out to be a very good one! <3

  5. Katie @ Peace Love & Oats

butter is pretty good, maybe some butter and little bit of preserves? that would probably be my favorite. Or butter with cinnamon sugar…

  6. Yin

I miss bread and butter! I used to eat butter straight up when I was little 😉

Butter is hands down my favorite spread for toast but peanut butter with cinnamon is pretty good too!

I used to play the violin but grew out of it.

No iPhone or any nifty new phone. My phone’s a fossil 😀

  7. Lisa F. @thevalleyvegan

LOL! I don’t get the Nike App either! I think you have to buy something to put on your shoe… I use RunKeeper & it works like a charm (plus I think its free!)

  8. Lisa F. @thevalleyvegan

I don’t get the Nike App either (I think you have to buy something for your shoe, look at the Apple Store…) but I love RunKeeper. I believe it’s still a free App, and you can do all kinds of fun things online with your info – including building a “street team” of your friends. It’s cool!!

Anyway, yes, I am a professional musician living in Los Angeles. 🙂 http://lisafebre.com

  9. Amanda Marie

I just discovered the Whole Foods app. Since I’m not as innovative as you when it comes to cooking meals, it has helped me with planning and combining flavors. I love it!

  10. Samantha

    Instagram!

  11. Kathy

Oh that tofu looks yummy (and so does the bread & earth balance). Yum. How did the new recipe turn out? What is the marinade you used? Please share.

  12. Ethel

E, I use MapMyRun app. I know the Nike one you can set to a distance and it tells you how far you’ve gone and how far you have left to go, but the MapMyRun app works for me just fine. I turn it on, I push START, then it goes. Then when I’m done with my run, I push stop and it tells me how far I’ve gone, my avg pace, fastest pace and I think elevation (but I don’t look at that stuff).

Going to replace our “I can’t believe it’s not butter” with Earth balance this week. I hope my dad won’t notice. =)

  13. Tierney @ Get Your Veg On

My favorite thing to do with toast is put EB, cinnamon, and agave on top. I usually use Alvarado St. Bakery sprouted grain bread, but I recently tried this with Dave’s Killer Bread. They are a Northwest brand, but they had some booths set up at stores in the bay area so I snagged a loaf. I did my usual thing to it and it turned out tasting like French toast! Definitely made my morning!

  14. Clare @ Fitting It All In

I used to do the crossword every day in college – I need to do it more!

I’ll have to go with nutbutter on toast. And I play the harp and the piano! (and used to play the accordian and the tin whistle.). I think that’s worse than being a band geek.

  15. Sami

pepperjack cheese & jam is awesome spread for toast. andddd so is light ragu & mozarella!

i just got an iphone, too! i love instagram, shazam, & pandora <3 also pinterest!

    xo.

  16. Shana

The soy free spread is my first experience with Earth balance and I HATED it! It tasted off….like plastic maybe? I want to give the regular kind a try because people seem to like it for baking and things. Smart Balance makes a vegan buttery spread so I’ve been using that, but need to experiment with it more.

  17. Lisa F. @thevalleyvegan

Yeah, I don’t particularly like the soy spread – try the “original” it’s my favorite and everyone in my house (vegan or not) likes it over butter and margarine!

  18. Jamie

Ohhhh I haven’t had bread in a month (cleansing) so it’s easy for me to fantasize about my favorite toppings!

    1) Avocado (of course!) with a squirt of lemon
    2) Earth Balance with nooch
    3) Annie’s Cashew Sesame Pimiento spread and tomato slices

By the way, whole wheat english muffins are the s*#t. I’m just sayin’…

  19. Casey @ Insatiably Healthy

I was literally thinking “rabbit, rabbit” when I woke up this morning. Then immediately thought if anyone else still thought of the term well beyond their elementary years.
Thanks for keeping the club alive 🙂

  20. Pure2raw twins

favorite app for my iphone right now is Instagram so addicting 🙂 and then there is tweet deck too

  21. Abby @ Abz 'n' Oats

My favorite toast topping is definitely crunchy almond or peanut butter with strawberry jam. My musical background involves 6 years of piano lessons and 4 years of playing the clarinet in concert band. My favorite apps are Twitter and Words with Friends–I don’t have an iPhone though. I hate my stinkin’ Droid. Come on August so I can get a different phone! lol.

  22. Nan

Not such a fan of Earth Balance….tastes bitter to me. Maybe I’ll try the olive oil one – I tried the soy-free and it was meh. I do like toast, and spelt bread is pretty great toasted. Missing honey a lot!
As for music, my first instrument is the oboe, I’ve done time with the tenor sax and the tin whistle, and now I am absolutely in love with playing the viola! I was an extra-nerdy oboe-playing band geek…. 🙂

  23. Emily @LivingLongfellow

Gosh, I wish I was able to do the crossword and drink coffee in the am occasionally! I get MPR and coffee on my commute to work, so that kind of counts. I love everything on toast. Salt and butter are my faves.

  24. Leng

I can’t figure out how that nike app works either!

  25. Renée

Looks like you have the Nike + GPS app & all you need to do is hit start a new run & press play. It will use GPS to see where you are, track your speed, map out your route. It’s awesome. BTW, I had all these leftovers in the fridge & mixed em up & had my first hippie bowl tonight with tamari & NYF. Yummy. Thanks for the post yesterday.

  26. Elise (Post author)

what if i dont want to run with my phone though? i have the nike+ capable shoes, so i thought id be able to use those and track my walking over the course of the day at the hospital. as far as i can tell, thats not possible unless i either wear a wristband or carry my phone all day. right?

  27. Elise (Post author)

i need to get english muffins like now thanks to your comment.

  28. Elise (Post author)

i think thats the first one i ever tried and it was the best. i bought the soy free one last time just to try it and it obviously wasnt a winner because it lasted a fairly long time. this olive oil one is going FAST. its delish.

  29. Elise (Post author)

i dont run w my phone though.

  30. Elise (Post author)

    coming soon 🙂

  31. Elise (Post author)

you rock! i just went to your site (the one w your maiden name) to listen to your music. so awesome.

ps i started on the flute and was horrible. i switched to the french horn and fell in love.

  32. Elise (Post author)

hooray! so glad you liked the seitan log 🙂

  33. Renée

Do you have the little Nike nugget thingy that goes in your shoes? I don’t know if it would store the info or if it works without your phone. You could check out nikeplus.com

  34. Lisa F. @thevalleyvegan

Thanks! I actually was “picked” to play French horn in 3rd grade, but no! I wanted to play flute! LOL! Even though I’ve had much success on woodwinds, I still feel like I missed a golden opportunity w/the horn… 🙁

  35. Ashley @ Cooking for John

    1. My fave bread toppers are either jam+earth balance or peanut butter, banana, cinnamon, and maple syrup. Depends on the day! I hope I find some olive oil EB around here soon, is it soy free?
    2. I played the violin from 5th- 12th grade. I’d love to get back info it!
    3. My fave app is instagrm, but I haven’t really explored all that many. I have mapmyrun- it works well!
