Peanut OIT starts

Wellllll well well.  Day one is officially behind us.  And I will admit I had a bunch of anxiety leading up to this day.  Obviously since we completed dairy I trust the process, but having been hospitalized for peanut ingestion before, it was a major mental hurdle for me to do this voluntarily!  We are lucky to have a huge support system, including my family, and friends, and facebook group…all cheering us on and lifting me up through this.  And now we have done it!  We have begun! We had a normal start to the… Read more >

Milk OIT graduation

I AM SUCH A PROUD MAMA! After several months of weekly visits to the Columbia Asthma and Allergy Clinic in Fremont, my son is a graduate of the milk OIT protocol!  He will now drink 1/2 cup (120 ml – equivalent to 4 g of protein) of whole milk twice a day for the rest of his life as a part of maintenance. After a month, we are allowed to experiment with different kinds and amounts of dairy, with the thinking being that in another few months he will achieve “free eating”, thereby tolerating any… Read more >

OIT update

I just figured I should pop in and give an update.  OIT is going well…slow and steady… The Thursday evening driving is not my favorite, but on the days he doesn’t have t-ball we can leave at a decent hour and so I don’t arrive at my parents’ house feeling like a scrambled egg. I’ve given up on naps, but he still so clearly needs some mid day sleep since he passes out in the car anytime we drive somewhere after 3 pm. On this particular day he fell asleep before we even left the garage…. Read more >

The start of OIT

Oats for the wee ones, but nada for me until after I took P to school. It was sunny and warm (!!!!) so I biked there.  Usually I have school with V on Thursdays, but the teacher was sick so it was cancelled. To be honest, I was a little relieved because our day was so packed with activities. Having one fewer thing on the docket was helpful in this case. I had to pull over once to break up some random argument about who knows what, but I made it in record time (same… Read more >

OIT and SLIT and allergy challenges

I don’t exactly know where to start with this post since it’s been a few months of back and forth and it’s not easy to sum up, but I like keeping you in the loop so here’s where we are… P has outgrown his tree nut, soy, sesame, and gluten allergies but is still allergic to peanuts and dairy. We are aware of all the latest treatment options for peanuts – namely what is being done at Stanford and Long Beach – to desensitize patients.  Essentially small doses are administered until the immune system is convinced… Read more >
