God Bless Psych Nurses

Maybe it’s because I’m a nut job myself.  Or maybe it’s because I prefer things that are based on formulas and bound by rules.  But whatever the reason, I have a very hard time with crazy people.*

*I’m using this term in the clinical sense.

I truly think psych nurses are 10% human and 90% saints.  I don’t know how they do it.

In case you couldn’t guess, there have been some real characters in the hospital lately.

Anyway.  I’m so behind in posting my work meals, I’m just gonna photo bomb you all and hope you can figure it out.

IMG_6328

Snacks: candied ginger and Greek yogurt with grapes and bananas (I didn’t end up eating the grapes though because I was feeling iffy and didn’t want to aggravate my GI system with excess fructose).

IMG_6324

Blueberry quinoa porridge (this bulk crock pot meal will not go away…obviously I underestimated how much 2 cups of quinoa would yield once combined with liquids).

IMG_6322

Kale and leftover pasta casserole.

Did I forget to post this recipe?

IMG_6314

It was basically a version of this recipe, but with different noodles and corn instead of peas.

IMG_6326

Snacks: carrots and nut & chocolate trail mix.

IMG_6327

Mostly almonds and cashews, but a few soy nuts and dark chocolate chips too.

Next!

IMG_6373

No close up on breakfast necessary, it was blueberry porridge (take 10), so just look at the previous photo of the dish.

IMG_6370

Egg salad with kale, butternut squash, mustard and nutritional yeast.  Make this now!

I had it with an Udi’s GF bagel.  I warmed the bagel in the microwave and used it as a spoon for part of the salad.

IMG_6374

Snacks: PopCorners sea salt chips, almonds, and carrots

IMG_6376 IMG_6375

These “chips” are fantastic.  They taste like the offspring of popcorn and rice cakes – flattened into chip form.  The portion size is perfect because it doesn’t ruin your appetite but it isn’t like eating air either.

That’s all I have time for now.  Gotta go pack my work eats…

What profession do you look at in awe?  Is there a job that you know you could never ever do?

I think teachers are on par with psych nurses in terms of requiring the most patience ever.  I think they are amazing.

Worst job ever in my eyes is cleaning or emptying portable toilets.  Sick.  I’d sooner die.

There are several jobs that I have the utmost respect for, one of them being geriatric nurses. Seeing as we took care of my grandma for five years before she went into the home, I got a big taste of it. Good lord. It’s so draining–physically and mentally–and there’s a lot of, um, clean up. If I didn’t love her so much, I can’t imagine doing what we did (as they do for complete strangers.)

I would never want to be a garbage man in the middle of summer or work for the road commission, scraping dead animals off the road. Ugh.

My first clinical volunteer experience was in an HIV/psych longterm care facility, and it blew my mind how patient and kind most of the nurses were. I don’t know how they do it on a daily basis, but it taught me a lot.

Nurses in general amaze me – the patience, the paperwork, the people… incredible! I’m also so impressed with government – that amount of responsibility can’t be easy for anyone…

Anything medical for the insane amount of your you work. Also people in the technology field. All of that technical mumbo jumbo is a gift I wish I had everyday!

I used to work as a mental health worker, and I have to say psych nurses are the best! For a brief period of time I thought about becoming a nurse, but I realized I just don’t have it in me.

This is just an observation, not a judgement – you need some reusable snack bags! I need to get some myself…I’m just waiting until B is a little older – her snacks are still in a bottle 🙂

I’m not speaking for Elise, but I remember that she said she washed out and reused snack bags until their death. I often have a lot of guilt over the snack bag thing as well, despite the washing of Ziplocs that I do!

    I’ve decided I never want to be a goalie…too much pressure 🙂

Dude, nurses/healthcare workers/medical professionals….anyone that has to work shifts…be under pressure (dealing with people’s lives!) and STILL be patient and helpful – I take my hat of to you all! I could not do it.

I couldn’t do anything with bugs… like being an exterminator – I talked to one once, and he told me he was in a situation where he had cockroaches up to his knees. Vomit.

I totally agree with having an insane amount of respect for psych nurses! I remember during my adult rotation for psych during nursing school I could not wait to break out of the doors of that building. On the inside I felt like I was running in order to get out of there. lol.

I totally agree with you! I’m also a nurse, and I have SO much respect for psychiatric nurses. Before I started nursing, I wanted to do psych.. until I got a full time position on a medical floor. lol!
I have a lot of patience, just not enough to work in psych. Anyways, I love your website! Kudos to you being able to do shift work and maintain all of this at the same time!

Teachers in HS and below are pretty freaking amazing, a ton of work for little pay, and such important work! I also am a fan of nurses in general, a great nurse always makes my day. I went to the derm today and had the sweetest nurse, Julie! She made me feel so much less nervous.

Your lunches and food in general always looks sooo good! I wish you could pack my snacks for me. Quick question: is candied ginger good? I see it all the time at my health food store, but I’ve never actually bought any. I’m really hesitant to try it…

its a bit spicy, depending on the brand you get it can be milder though. i love love love the stuff but i am the only person in my family who feels that way, so its not surprising to me when i find out others dislike it. if your health foods store has a bulk bins section ask to try it out first! actually, many places – whole foods included – will let you try an item before you get it to see if you like it. ask!

yup. abby’s got an impressive memory. i cant even recall the last time i bought ziplock baggies but it was way before we moved to nyc. ive been using the same ones for months (years probably). i am such a nerd about it too because i have separate ones for dry foods like nuts/dried fruit/cereal/granola and for wet foods like carrots. you’d think my stomach would be able to tolerate anything after eating bacteria from 2007…

so true! im having heart palpitations just thinking about it now.

I love candied ginger, but it’s so hard to find!
Once I gave a piece to my friend to try, she had to spit it out and curse for a few seconds, she really hated it 😀 I’ve never met somebody who loves it like I do 🙁

Are you on a hummus break? I am too!
