Hangover food

This weekend was amazingly fun, and somehow I came away with zero photos.  Zero!

I’m blaming it on my super small clutch, which doesn’t fit a camera in any way shape or form.

Anyway, as you can probably deduce from the title of this post, we’ve had some wild ones lately.  It started with Friday night…followed by Saturday day.  Weddings are the best!

Sunday morning, however, was rough.  How to do a hangover brunch vegan-style?  There better be something with simple carbs and fat involved.  And since my stomach is sensitive to greasy foods, it had better be quality fats (no sketchy take-out or street meat, thankyouverymuch).

Luckily we already had leftover white rice on hand (old rice is so much better for frying), but I had to run to the store for the tofurky sausages (Kyle was indisposed).

Usually Field Roast is my faux meat of choice, but these were on sale, so that $ealed the deal.  I opted for the Italian flavored ones, since I most definitely didn’t feel like Beer Brats and Kielbasa is a bit too spicy for my taste.

I sliced them into rounds and seared them using minimal cooking spray.

Once they had blackened slightly, I added the leftover rice with some oil.

I cooked it on high first, then lowered it down as the rice started to snap, crackle, and pop around.

Ready to go!

I was actually in need of coffee first and foremost, but food was a very close second.  That’s probably the main difference between my normal self and my day-after-drinking self.  I rarely wake up hungry, but when I’ve spent the previous night boozing, my appetite hits the ground running.

[It should be noted that this was eaten at noon, so I’m not sure it’s really fair to say my stomach was ready right off the bat, but my slowness in preparing the meal had more to do with the fact that I was preoccupied nursing Kyle]

Any go-to hangover meals?  Are you hungry from the second you get up or does your appetite take a while to warm up?

I’m rarely hungry when I wake up, unless I ate dinner really early the night before and didn’t have a snack. I usually take an hour or two, so I get my workout in early then I’m ready for breakfast!

When I first discovered that tofurky sausage I ate it everday for 2 weeks straight, and then I couldn’t look at it anymore. That was months ago, and this post kind of makes me want to revisit it.

And I have only had one hangover in my life (I KNOW…even through the liver abuse in college, which is amazing) – and I couldn’t eat anything except watermelon. Weird?

ahh I love it…my hangover food of choice chipotle & I usually wake up starving too after drinking but somehow never end up eating until lunch!

Your meals looks good- nice and simple. Not to mention easy on the digestive system.

When I am hungover my stomach feels super sour. I usually stick with simple, easy meals like yours above. My go-to hangover meal is toast with earth balance and fresh apple and ginger juice. I have found that a little bit of sugar generally helps take away a hangover slightly…

I am always hungry as soon as I wake up – breakfast is my favourite meal of the day, for sure. Love 🙂 And that hangover meal sounds amazing! Hahaha…poor Kyle… 😛 Glad you guys had fun! xyx

My hang-over food of choice is definitely anything with avocado. My favourite is probably whipping up some guacamole and attacking it with Guiltless Gourmet corn chips. Mmmmm…

Since I typically sleep in a lot later after a wild night on the town, I usually wake up hungry. Nothing beats a good brunch. This Saturday I was in NYC and had 2 poached eggs over sweet cakes with Lox and delicious baby potatoes. Oh goodness, it was SO GOOD! (hollandaise sauce on the side of course)

This can almost be a Filipino breakfast. All you need is a fried egg. Haha! LOVE!

p.s. missed you kids. will email.

This weekend definitely included brunch with a giant egg-white florentine omelet (spinach and feta) plus buttery toast. And tons of coffee…

When I am hungover, I am instantly hungry when I wake up. I was actually terribly hungover this Sunday for the first time in a long time (fiance’s birthday celebration) and I was able to trick myself into wanting a bowl of minestrone soup. I threw a bunch of veggies into some vegetable broth, added pasta sauce, chick peas, and a handful of pasta and I felt so much better after. I think what it comes down to is that I just want something warming and comforting, so the soup was perfect while still being quite healthy.

In college, I was all about greasy Chinese food, pizza, bagels with loads of cream cheese, etc. Now, I could still crave that if I wanted, but I’m wise enough to know that something healthier will also do the trick.

I am sooo sensitive to any alchohol but end up with a few nasty hangovers right around xmas party season (i cant help kyself around champagne!!) first thing the next morning is buckets of coffee, then very plain carby things like toast, dry cereal, or if i can handle leaving my apartment the seven grain bagel from pick a bagel toasted with pb and j fixes all that is wrong in the world.

I love vegan sausages! Never tried the Tofurky kind though–I usually get the Lightlife or Trader Joe’s brand. Thanks for the serving suggestion 🙂

    Hi Elise,
I am wondering do you have any IBS symptoms after drinking an alcohol? Unfortunately it seems I can not have any drinks.
Btw I tried your lasagna rolls there were delicious-Thanks much!!!

  14. Elise (Post author)

oh no. im so sorry izabela. i actually dont seem to have any issues with alcohol, but i also try to avoid drinking excess amounts of beer. if im going to be drinking over the course of the day/evening, i stick to things like wine. that way i can sip on it and multiple glasses dont leave me feeling ill.

Is tofurkey sausage good? It’s such a convenient way to get veggie-friendly protein, but frankly, it kinda freaks me out. What do you think? I trust your taste buds. 😉

It definitely takes my tummy a while to warm-up in the morning. Quite the opposite of my sister who eats breakfast immediately after rolling out of bed. It’s amazing how people’s appetites can be so different!
Sounds like you had an amazing weekend! Weddings are the best. 🙂

It’s interesting how and when all these symptoms occur. Wine is out of the question for me, if anything I have a shot or two of vodka;)Thanks Elise

Oh lady, I so felt you this weekend. I was out almost every night last week and the weekend got a little ridiculous, and both Saturday and Sunday mornings found me scarfing as much bread as would fit in my belly, and then more. I like eggs and carbs and sweets and whatever… when I’m hungover, I’m insatiable.

Man, when I’m hungover, I want to eat ALL DAY LONG. Constant snacking works for me, lots of carbs, fresh fruit and vegetables do the trick. Vegemite/marmite on toast is a cracker hangover cure, as the B vitamins and iron in it help replenish what was lost during the night of boozing 🙂
