Longest shift of my life

I know there’s a ton of TWSS potential with that post title, but unfortunately it is in reference to my j-o-bizzle (so get yo’ mind out of the gutter)!

How was my day?

IMG00307

Does that answer the question? (not that you really asked)

Four of those are mine.  Four.  Normally I’m all about saving my cup and taking advantage of the free 54 cent refills.  But, since I worked through lunch, I didn’t even get the chance to run across the street to get my Starbucks fix.  I was barely hanging on (which I guess was pretty apparent) because next thing I knew, a patient’s family arrived with a tray full of grande coffees in hand.  Like a moth to a flame, I was ON IT.

IMG_5652

Busy busy busy.  In case you were curious how much of my packed food I was able to eat – I’ll tell you – not too much.  The Spooky ‘Smores Z bar was the only thing I could scarf down until 3 pm.  Hangry would be an understatement.  I was straight up b!tchy.  I stepped away so I didn’t blow a fuse and pounded the 365 spelt pretzels and the BSE (best salad ever) in less than 15 minutes.

IMG_5653

Kale, spinach, butternut squash, shrooms, cherry toms, steamed broccoli, chickpeas, and dried cranberries.  Holy portion control, this was a monster.

Stupid freaking 14 hour shift.  I was either going to cry or kill someone pass out by the end of the day.  Unfortunately, the nurse I was supposed to give report to (my PM replacement) arrived nearly an hour late, so I was stuck at the hospital covering far too many patients while running on empty, and waiting for death to come dreaming of dinner.

Speaking of…

IMG_5646

I heard this soup was a miss, but I am going to have to go against the grain and say I LOVED IT.  Butternut squash in a creamy (non-dairy) soup form?  Sign.me.up.

IMG_5648

Oh yeah!

I spiced it up with a few shakes of paprika, which added a perfect kick.  I truly adored this soup (like, want-to-bathe-in-it) and went back for 3 more bowls full.  Yup.  It’s true.  In the words of Oliver Twist “please sir, can I have some more?”  (I finished the whole box).

Not done yet.

I had to get in some solid food to soak up the sloshing situation going on in my belly.

Snobby joes!!!

It had been far too long since I last had these.  I’m always pleasantly surprised at how easy and tasty this recipe is.  And cheap too!  The dried lentils cost 30 cents, and the rest of the seasonings and tomato paste/sauce were equally as inexpensive.

Good food and a good deal put me in the best mood.  :)  Work was long gone out of my mind at this point…and guess what else!

IMG_5649

Whole Foods FINALLY got their own brand of hummus (it’s about dang time)!

I decided to bust open the Roasted Red Pepper flavored hummus and it was really ah-maz-ing.  Dare I say BETTER than Sabra’s roasted red pepper?  It was definitely spicier, but not too much so.  Like Goldilocks, it was just right.

IMG_5650

As you can see, I opted for a second helping of snobby joes, this time with some WF roasted red pepper hummus on top.  It may sounds weird, but trust, it was divine.

Dessert, done.

  9. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga)

As a kid, I adored sloppy joes. Not the meat, just the aroma and flavor. I would like drink the sloppy joe sauce and lick it off the meat. Hey, I was 8 🙂
I heart you for that recipe!

LOVE The starbucks cups. Is that really true that refills are 54 cents if u save your cup? Is that only on drip coffee? Ive heard stories along these lines but they seem like a pipe dream….

  10. broccolihut

I am also a fan of that butternut squash soup. It’s great for making a veggie-ful pasta sauce too:)
LOVE the idea of Snobby Joes AND hummus. Genius, woman!

I’ve def. put hummus on my snobby joes before! Love it! I must look out for the WF brand. Sounds tasty.

I’m the same way with TJ’s veggie soup, 1 box is like 1 serving for me!

  16. ellie

14 hour shoft? Hats off to you, hippy friend. Not many could do that and still be standing at the end of it…hell, I’d need carted off to the ER after that.

I would like your lunch and snobby joe/hummus combo please, My address is….hehe 😛 Hope you have some days off soon- am still thinking you could totally be a WF or sabra ambassador and travel the world sharing their delights with those yet to experience the awesomeness of hummus.

    I could totally be a career coach…

  17. Maggie

I love that soup! The roasted red pepper tomato one is pretty awesome too, but sadly not vegan. At least it’s organic!

14 hour shift = Eek!! Hope you’re getting some rest now 😀

  18. lilveggiepatch

Lordy lord, that is a LOT of coffee! Hang in there, my dear.

  19. Quinn

Yikes – sounds like a cuh-razy day! Hopefully you have some time to rest.

In response to your post yesterday re: wedding make-up. The first trial was from a private make-up stylist who my photographer referred to me. The second was my hair salon, they also had a make-up area, but they were no bueno and it was like amateur hour. The third, and one that I ended up selecting was the Sisley counter at Neiman’s. If you have a shopping mall near you, get some trials and talk with them if that’s something they would do. Sometimes, they’ll send one of their sales associates to you as well. Good thing with the mall is it’s $Free.99. I mean, I bought some things to touch up, but it wasn’t the $150 -200 I was being quoted. Let me know if you need more help!!!!!

  20. The Foodie Diaries

Chica, I’m not sure I like the blasphemous better-than-Sabra talk. But I like you, so I’ll give the WF stuff a go. I still haven’t tried TJ hummus though. Ah, the vida of having a magic neverending Sabra stash…

  21. ethel

Thanks for the update on the acronym…hehe…Anywho, delicious looking soup, I will have to try since it’s sans lactose. And I may also try your snobby joe’s…I’m a fan of the photos and you’ve got me sold! WF run, here I come!

p.s. did I tell you that when I was in PV visiting Sbomb last Saturday we ordered from this mediterranean restaurant and they gave the best hummus ever! They were in small 1.5ounce containers and when Ljepa said she was gonna throw the leftovers out, I jumped at the chance of taking them home and my mom and I inhaled them! She’s a convert now…haha

  22. Angharad (Eating for England)

Oh girl! That is a shift to forget! I HATE when I don’t have time to eat at work. It makes me really angry and snarky. Watch out!
Glad you had the BSE to get you somewhat through…and I am impressed to the point of bowing down at your ability to eat three bowls of soup, and two helpings of snobby joes! You needed it after 14 hours of nothingness!! Phew!

  23. Stacy (Eating To Live Love Laugh Tri)

Oh man, that sounds like a brutally long day! Thank God for Starbucks to pull you through!

  24. Holly

gahhhhh i loathe when work is that crazy that you don’t even get the time to enjoy a meal. don’t employers know that we would be way MORE productive if you could cut us a 15 minute break to eat. whatevs. over it. kinda.

love your packed lunches – defo look better than mine. i still cant find the spooky clif z-bar and it is pissing me off.

yay for coffeee!!! my coffee consumption has been steadily increasing the past couple weeks.

love ya – have a good day!

  25. cmb0096

Holy cow…a 14 hour shift?! Did you draw the short stick or what?!?

I *love* steamed broccoli on salad–so good!

    Courtney

  26. K

They brought you coffee? Favorite patient/family of the day award goes to them!

I love how artsy your swirls of paprika are – Top Chef, anyone?! Snobs and hummus? Have I told you I love you?!

  27. elise

it’s true!! refills are only 50 cents (plus tax) – im not sure if its exclusively for drip coffee because thats all i get. soy milk costs 50 cents extra, so when i get soy mistos its a treat. im a girl on a budget!

  28. elise

yup. best patient/family ever!! most people bring donuts, cookies, etc. its like, did heart surgery teach you NOTHING? haha, caffeine is a way better gift 🙂

  29. elise

blah. just worked out like that due to the unit being crazy busy. my normal shifts are 12 hours, so its just an extra hour on each end.

  30. elise

i miss you so much. i wish we still lived by each other. you could be my official taste tester. i could turn you vegan in 4.5 seconds 🙂 way to salvage the HUMMUS. oh man, a girl after my own heart. sandra’s mom is crazy to throw that out.

  31. elise

haha, i know. i bet my heart rate was barely sub-200s, but oh well!

  32. elise

yesssssss. the red cups are one of the only redeeming parts about the onset of winter, haha.

  33. elise

yes! i knew youd feel the same way, haha. soup servings are such BS anyways. who has half a can, or 1/4 of a box? puh-leez.

  34. elise

i was thisclose to admitting myself at the end of the shift, for sure.

dream job = sabra taste tester (or any hummus for that matter)…but ambassador would be a close second

  35. elise

have you tried any of the others? broccoli? im not sure which are vegan, bc i havent looked into them, but i loved the BN squash so ill do my research now on the others…

  36. elise

thanks so much quinn. im gong to do some research now when im home. i guess ill go to the mall and check out the counter girls though and feel them out. sometimes their makeup scares me, so ill find the most normal looking one i can! i still have a while (the wedding isnt until aug), so ill be tapping your fountain of wisdom later, for sure.

  37. elise

haha, try it. then we’ll talk. but sabra def has a permanent place en mi corazon. can you tell sabra that id be willing to be an ambassador or taste tester of some sort?

  38. ethel

Eclaire, I will taste test for you any day! I may be open to eating more vegan-esque meals, but I cannot abandon those really meaty burgers. (TWSS) HAHA!! I got it! I feel like Pam when Jim and her have those tiny ear pieces…haha… I found one small container still in my fridge this am. I think mama Sale tried to hide it from me, but I found it!

  39. Jessica (jesslikesithot)

Amazing post! I’m actually quite the fan of that vegan b-nut squash soup, and those snobby joes are callin’ me!!! Gotta make those soon. And topped with hummus? Hello food porn 🙂

Props to you for making it through that shift!!! You’re such a warrior! And a warrior needs her coffeeeeee!
