Make your own mix

I have a pie-related question.

Ridiculous or genius?  You tell me.

The thing is, the “pumpkin pie” spices are ones you probably already have in your pantry: cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, & allspice.

The only difference is now you can buy it pre-assembled.  And as we all know, humans are suckers for anything that  increases efficiency and reduces labor…even if it only saves 0.6 seconds.  Totally worth it.  Right?

Maybe not.  It costs $5 at Whole Foods and it’s not even organic.  So I’ll just make my own thankyouverymuch.

Sweet Pumpkin Pie Spice Mix

  • 1 tbsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tbsp ginger
  • 1 tsp allspice
  • 1 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tsp NuNaturals stevia *

Nutmeg and allspice are more potent, so you want to use them in smaller quantities.  Also, cinnamon and ginger are two of my favorite flavors, so I wasn’t shy with them at all.

*To make it sweet and still keep it calorie free (like most spices are), I used 1 tsp NuNautals stevia, but this is entirely optional depending on what you plan to use it for.  I will most likely be adding it to oats or smoothies, so a little sweetness never hurts.  You could use other kinds of sugar too, but they should be very finely ground.  Course sugar won’t mix as well because the other spices are so fine.

Aside from pouring it on oats, you could also add it to smoothies, mix it in yogurt, pre-season squash before roasting it, etc. etc.

Of course there’s the most obvious use of all…making pumpkin pie.  But I’m thinking seasoning my oatmeal is a more common day to day purpose.

Sad to say but I own a $5 jar of pumpkin spice… I saw another blogger using it on all her meals, so I figured I needed it too… It wasn’t until I got home that I read the ingredients and realized I already had them all.. Oops.

  2. Caity @ Moi Contre La Vie

Trader Joe’s carries them in the fall and I always grab a couple, but I have to admit I almost always add more nutmeg to the mix when I use it, so perhaps I should just make my own…

  3. The Nature of Jo

I don’t preassemble but when I am wanting that pumpkin pie spice flavor I get out all of the spices and add as much of each as I want. Some days I want more nutmeg and some days I am feeling a bit more cinnamon.

  4. Clare @ Fitting It All In

I buy the mix! But that’s because I actually don’t have ginger and nutmeg…

  5. kathleen

I actually have my own fajita, cajun and blueberry pie sugar/cinnamon mix in my cupboard. I will admit that I bought pumpkin spice but only because it was so cheap to buy it bulk at the food co-op. Do you have a food co-op near you? They usually have bulk slices and funky/local products whole foods doesn’t carry.

  6. Heather @ Better With Veggies

I admit I bought the mix, but when I run out, I’ll refill the jar with the ingredients instead. 🙂

  7. Katie @ Peace Love and Oats

I bought pumpkin pie spice from world market because they had it for $2. Then I found out that I already owned everything that’s inside it… Haha I actually rarely use it!

  8. Lindsay @ Lindsay's List

so relevant because I had this on my grocery list…and now all I need to buy is nutmeg. Thanks!

  9. Heather

I add cloves to my homemade spice mix as well!

  10. Katie

It’s funny, because I do own a jar of pumpkin spice, but I rarely use it and end up using all my other spices to probably make something similar to pumpkin pie spice without even knowing it. Your oats look DELISH!

  11. Lacey

Ok, I admit it!! Out of pure laziness and a lack of desire to buy then throw away allspice, I’ve bought the premade stuff. Truth be told, I make my own at home now with ginger, cinnamon and a pinch of nutmeg since I keep those things at home. The best place to get the premade stuff is Big Lots though; it’s only $1 for a container-so worth the price!! that mccormick variety you posted above is like $4 for a small amount where I live and it’s just not worth it. I’m not THAT lazy 😉

I do own that spice and use it regularly, especially in the Fall. Some recipes actually call for it by name, and it seems easier to buy the all-in-one spice instead of guessing at the measurements that could vary by recipe. I wish they made a gingerbread all-in-one spice because I do have the individual ones for that combo.

  13. Heather

I have pumpkin pie spice. It was only $1.20! would’ve been more expensive to get the separate spices in my case, especially after moving when I didn’t have any of my spices. 🙁

  14. Just sayin

    Cinnamon has calories.

  15. Minerva

Haha, I have that pictured pumpkin pie spice in my desk drawer at work. Today I sprinkled some in my coffee 🙂

  16. Lou

It’s ridiculous – I think it must be a US thing, cos I’ve never seen it in Aussie. Pumpkin Pie isn’t traditional here I guess. Love a bit of DIY! I suppose it’s similar to Mixed Spice?

  17. Elise (Post author)

mixed spice? no idea. never heard of it, haha.

  18. Elise (Post author)

ok, yes, but its negligible. i mean, youd have to eat a LOT of cinnamon to make a real dent in your metabolism.

  19. Elise (Post author)

nice. i have added cinnamon to mine, but never pumpkin pie spices. good call.

  20. Lou

a ha! I love Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mixed_spice) pretty much the same thing – different name 🙂

  21. Elise (Post author)

hmmm, interesting…ive never seen it in recipes as the blend. maybe i have older cookbooks?? haha. now a gingerbread spice mix would be yummmmmmy. i love gingerbread. love love love.

  22. lynn @ the actor's diet

so funny i almost bought my first bottle at TJ’s today. it was under $1.50!!! but i have all the stuff at home so i couldn’t bring myself to get it.

  23. Elise (Post author)

1.50 isnt too bad! but free is better 🙂

  24. Sarah

I guess i technically make my own because i detest ginger. So i just sprinkle on everything else!

  25. Kaitlyn@TheTieDyeFiles

I own pumpkin pie spice but I never ever use it. I always just put the spices in individually!

  26. Tt in nyc

I make my own with spices from health food store bulk bins, heavy on the ginger. And then i add candied ginger slices and a bottle of that wine called “sweet red” from trader joes to make my so called top secret hot mulled wine during the winter. Just trust me on this one.

  27. Abby @ Abz 'n' Oats

I have the Pumpkin Pie Spice in my spice rack but I don’t have nutmeg, allspice, or ginger. lol. I love the idea of adding stevia to it! 🙂 Your recipe sounds great!

  28. Elise (Post author)

    haha…well there goes my theory!

  29. Elise (Post author)

oh my gosh. this sounds amazing!!

  30. Sheila D.

Since we have instant access to almost everything, we often get tricked to buy instead of discover. Not knowing we already have all the natural ingredients in our midst, we spend and choose to do things instantly.

  31. Mary Claudine

Recipe sounds amazing! Would love to try this our but I am not so good at following recipes. This one I ought to try out since I have most of the things in the list. Thanks for sharing! :*
