Savory Hash

Ready for an unconventional breakfast?

Tea in a coffee cup.  Why I felt like this as opposed to this is a mystery.

By the way, this photo is false advertising since I added a hefty pour of almond milk afterwards.  I like my tea (and coffee) the color of the discontinued light brown M&M’s.  Creamy.

The second reason this breakfast is unconventional (for me), is that I went savory as opposed to sweet.  And there are no grains to be found!

Recently, my mother-in-law and I had a discussion about breakfast fare.  She thought people were either savory or sweet, through and through, and didn’t flip flop between the two.  I disagreed.  I am usually a sweet person, preferring oatmeal with fruit and nut butter to sausage and eggs, but every once in a while I crave a scramble first thing in the morning.  She’s a savory person though.  The mere mention of oatmeal elicited a look of horror (as if I’d suggested worms for breakfast).  Are you a flip-flopper or decidedly sweet or savory?

Cheesy Egg & Potato Hash
[vegetarian, gluten free, FODMAPs free]

Ingredients:

  • 3 organic eggs
  • 1 small potato, chopped and microwaved for 3 minutes
  • 1/4 cup nutritional yeast
  • 1 tbsp Bragg’s liquid aminos (or tamari)
  • 3 tbsp plain almond milk

Directions:

Grease pan (or spray with non-stick).  Chop potato and microwave for 3 minutes to pre-cook it.  Add potato to hot pan.  Toss them a bit and let them fry, then push them to the side and crack the eggs into the other side of the pan.  Flip eggs around in their own space until most of the whites are cooked.

Then scramble everything together.  Add nutritional yeast, almond milk, and Bragg’s.

Once liquid has reduced, serve em up.

I think this is a breakfast we could have both enjoyed.

And now I’m off to pack some plane snacks.

Not really necessary on a red-eye, but backup food is never a bad call.

By the time you read this (a) I will be in Philly (hopefully having remembered my ID) and (b) you will have celebrated Cinco de Mayo.  ¡Salud!

I agree with you – I’m a flip flopper! I usually make savory just because oats are so easy, good and keep me full. But often I crave some eggs and veggies, and I always order savory when I eat breakfast at a restaurant!

I don’t always enjoy savory breakfasts, but this looks SO good!

    This looks yummy!

Oh, I wish I’d known you were going to be in Philly – I would love to meet you. But I hope the trip is a good one.

I’m not big on savory breakfast—unless it’s brunch. Who am I kidding, though? Even when I stay up late and/or have plans to meet up with friends for brunch, I’m awake way before anyone else would be ready to eat. Brunch is usually lunch for me.

I’m a fan of both savory & sweet dishes too. Definitely need to make that egg/tater dish asap; it looks so good! I like your idea for plane snacks also. Healthy yet flavorful. I’m sure the other passengers will be envious!

I’m usually all about the oats too – but thanks for the delish looking savory recipe. I’ve never thought to put nutritional yeast and almond milk with eggs!

    Sweet. Always.

I always have sweet breakfasts. I think there has only been a couple times ever I have eaten a savoury breakfast, and that would be when I go out to eat breakfast. This does look good though! I love eggs and nutritional yeast together

Sometimes sweet, sometimes savory. But I only like my oats savory. Sweet oatmeal is icky to me.

I’m usually a sweet breakfast person too but this sounds wonderful! 🙂

Sweet through and through. I’ve had a savoury breakfast maybe once… but it was more like a brunch so doesn’t really count. Ew I can’t handle the thought of savoury in the morning. Viper has BOTH for breakfast… cereal appetiser and cooked eggs etc to follow. Men.

I’m totally a flip flopper. I love smoothies and oatmeal, but I love something hearty just as much. My current fave is toast topped with Dijon, avocado, and nooch. Yum!

Love this discussion! I am both; at the same time. I eat my pancakes and syrup along side of my savory potatoes, eggs and sausage. When I make breakfast at home, it all depends on what I’m craving at the moment… it could be hot crispy blueberry waffles or tamales with fried eggs on top with salsa. Who knows, until I say I feel like having……
