Welcome to the new place

I don’t have many photos yet because this is the first time I’ve turned on my computer since February, but I wanted to give you a sneak peek of our new apartment home.

Ok, maybe you can’t tell much of anything from the picture of Kyle unpacking the kitchen…

The days leading up to the move were chaotic; and it was a (planned) blessing that I worked the day the movers actually came.  It was really weird leaving to go to the hospital from one apartment…and then coming home to a brand new place.

I came home to lots of boxes.  Lots and lots of boxes.

This is my I-am-so-excited-but-semi-horrified-at-the-mess-surrounding-me face.  Since I was already exhausted from work (note: scrubs and bags under eyes), I didn’t have any energy to unpack that night.  It was a twenty minute mission just finding the right bathroom box with soap so I could shower before passing out in our (un-made) bed.  Luckily our new place has a washer/dryer.  Can I get a hell yeah for no more coin operated shared laundry!?!?

photo

Hippie heap.  :)  Kyle brought the laundry upstairs just as I got out of the shower.  Honestly, had he left me buried in the warm sheets three minutes longer I would have been snoozing.

Not much cooking has been happening, which doesn’t really concern me except for the fact that I don’t like spending so much money on take-out and prepared food.

As much as I love kale salads that I don’t have to prepare, I miss cooking!

It’s going to be fun to get back into it…starting tonight if I get off the computer and get to it!

We’ve actually been really efficient with our unpacking time.  We drove up to Elk Grove and back on Saturday for Kyle’s grandfather’s funeral, so that took 20 hours out of the weekend.

photo-1

The two positive things I can say about Saturday are (1) I got to see family – some of whom I haven’t seen since our wedding and (2) I got to shop at a new-to-me grocery store, Nugget Markets.  Otherwise it was just a loooong road trip with a funeral sandwiched in the middle.

Aside from Saturday and the days I’ve been at work, we have definitely been making big strides and the place is coming together so nicely.  Plus it’s been so much FUN!

Unpacking is usually stressful for me, but Kyle and I have been really enjoying the process.  We keep commenting on how much we feel like grown ups.

I’m thinking of doing a final tour of the place if I can figure out video blogging.  Maybe it’ll just be a photo tour though.

What’s one thing (or more) that you’d like to change about your current living situation?  We were so sick of coin operated laundry machines and no pantry.  Plus we wanted a semi-yard.  Now we have all three!  Upgrade!!

Love the kitchen! In my nhouse, I hate that I don’t have a space of my own. The Husband has an office, but I have absolutely nowhere to put all of my stuff for blogging/etc. It’s frustrating!

  2. Jamie @ Don't Forget the Cinnamon

Congratulations!!!! The kitchen (obvi the most important room in the house!) is gorgeous and no more coin-op laundry is definitely an upgrade!

I’ll be moving come June and am very excited to find a new place without MICE and with a level floor! My current bedroom is quite slanted…I think the builders forgot about something called the foundation.

  3. Paige

Your new place looks awesome! I love that style of kitchen cabinets so major points for that.

  4. Coco

Hurray for upgrades! We bought our house 2 1/2 years ago- and although I love my house (especially after we remodeled the kitchen, which still needs some finishing touches) I wish it were in the city- I can’t help it.. I’m a city girl and I miss being walking distance to so many awesome restaurants, coffee houses and shops. The house itself needs some more stuff done to it- but owning and updating a house is big bucks.. and a whole lot of work.. We were just talking about how much easier and less stressful renting is- so who knows, maybe we will try to sell it and move back to our city!

I sit here typing this on my laptop in the midst of a bazillion boxes as we just moved this weekend! Lucky for me, I took two weeks off work to paint, unpack and (hopefully) take a breather and enjoy at least a day or two off! 🙂

I so hear you about the take out. We’ve eaten out just about every meal since Thursday night (we moved ourselves with the help of family), and I’m definitely feeling it. I’m glad I had the foresight to buy some single-serve Chobani yogurts, fresh blueberries and some plastic spoons so at least my breakfasts won’t be so unhealthy!

Can’t wait to see more pictures! Congrats!

Woo-hoo! It looks great so far, and I’m sure it will slowly come together…

I bought a house four years ago so there are always a million things I would like to upgrade if I had the time and the knowledge about how to upgrade them. But, you know, I don’t. So instead I do one “big” thing a year–get the house painted, a newish roof, etc. to break it up a bit. The little things I can live without, as I would rather spend the money on good food 😉

With that said, I wish there was a Trader Joes or Whole Foods within 300 miles of my house. THAT would be an upgrade.

Love your kitchen! We’re looking for the same exact things you are! A pantry, no more coin-operated laundry, and some outdoor space 🙂

  8. Katie @ Peace Love & Oats

I’m so with you on the coin-operated laundry! I live on the top (5th) floor of my building and taking my laundry up and down (don’t worry, I only have to walk up one flight to get to the elevator) to the basement and scrounging around for quarters is just too much. I can’t wait until the day I can just throw something in the laundry and not have it be a huge 3-hour ordeal.

The primary thing I would change about my living situation is my roommate, but that’s changing next month when my boyfriend and I move into a new (one bedroom) in the complex. I also wish that the complex had a jacuzzi in the pool area, but that’s just nitpicking.

Tried veggie grill for the first time when I was in LA this past weekend. All Hail Kale is amazing. HOW do they make their tempeh??

  11. janetha

fun!!! i love it. i want to come visit and cuddle.

  12. Amanda

The new place looks gorgeous–I’m jealous! I actually just re-leased my current place, coin operated shared laundry machines and all. I love my current place but like they say, the grass is always greener!

  13. Courtney

OMG…I am SO jealous that you have your own washer/dryer! That would be my first and biggest change from my current apt. If only I could afford a place without coin operated washer/dryers… 🙂

    Courtney

  14. Brigid

The new place is cute! Are you still in Santa Monica?

  15. Lou

We’ve just moved too, and I don’t think I would change a thing 🙂 So happy! Your place looks great… I love that whole ‘setting up’ stage. When is your sister moving to Sydney? Any plans on coming over?!?

  16. lynn @ the actor's diet

    congrats – it’s gorgeous! when’s the housewarming party 🙂

  17. Dr. Evan

You have a really nice kitchen! Everything is so clean and organized. Your house looks great! Good luck to you in your new enviornment.

  18. Teresa

While I’m not in love with my house, its good for now since it is just me and my husband. However, I agree 100%–my biggest complaint is not being in the city! We are looking and hoping to move back someday, but unfortunately we aren’t quite there yet. However, when we do I cannot wait to be within walking distance of some great Thai places, the farmers market, my fave vegan bakery etc. 🙂

  19. Elise (Post author)

haha, omg, id say thats a pretty legit request.

  20. Elise (Post author)

congrats on your move too! i can totally relate to feeling the difference in home cooked vs take out.

  21. Elise (Post author)

well look at you little miss home owner 🙂 clearly youve been a grown up for a while…i shall take notes from your mature ways. although no TJs nearby is pretty tragic.

  22. Elise (Post author)

  23. Elise (Post author)

    so cute! love it!
Gary and I are in the process of doing some major moves here soon. So we will be in your situation of moving soon. making these major decisions does make us feel older too, it sucks haha
have fun with the last bit of unpacking!

  32. Abby @ Abz 'n' Oats

I’m loving everything about my current living situation except for my car dying about once a day! lol.

  33. Courtney

It’ll be worth it. At least you will be wearing clean clothes in debt!

  34. Katie

Congrats on the move! Love it. So spacious!

  35. Adrianna

congrats! hope you guys enjoy it …much deserved. having laundry is the best thing imo, but I refuse to iron, so every morning I de-wrinkle with the dryer.

  37. Heather @ Kiss My Broccoli

Oh my gosh!!!!!! Congratulations!! I feel so bad that it’s taken me THIS long to get semi-caught up on your posts, but I’m so so happy for you two! And not having to spend a butt-load of money on laundry is DEFINITELY something to celebrate!

The only thing I don’t like about my new house is my driveway…it’s practically Mt. Everest…let’s just say that if it ever snows and gets icy, I’ll have to configure some sort of rope-pulling apparatus just to make it to the front door! But I LOVE the fact that I have a bigger kitchen WITH a pantry and hardwood floors now! 🙂

  38. Elise (Post author)

hahaha….a good snowed in excuse at least??

i need to come visit. or you need to visit me. either way.

ps loving your marathon commenting 🙂
