When bread is more important than looking pretty

Have you ever had Eggs Benedict?  Don’t worry, there’s no hollandaise to be found in this post.

Truthfully, I don’t even know what’s in hollandaise sauce, but I think there’s butter and some other artery clogging stuff.  Not for me.

I’ll tell you what IS for me though.  Bread.

If I had to limit myself to one food for the rest of time it would probably be bread.  Meh.  I will probably take that statement back the second I remember something else I frequently binge on.  But for now let’s just go with it.

Bread.

It’s good stuff.

Semifreddi’s is a San Francisco Bakery.  My parents keep the house stocked with their goods (usually sourdoughs), so I have come to associate it with warm, yummy, homey feelings.  I’m not sure if that’s normal, but whatever.

I bought a big Ciabatta loaf at the (new) Whole Foods in my home town before Kyle and I drove to Clearlake for NYE.   I single handedly ate 1/3 of it on the eve of the 31st.  The rest of it made it home to Santa Monica with me.

To give you an idea of it’s relative importance in my life, I chose it as a carry on over my toothbrush, make-up, and face lotion.  [I had to be home for work earlier than Kyle so I flew back to LA and Kyle is driving back later…with my toiletries]

Bread > Looking pretty

So.  Back to the Benedict.

1. Toast two slices of Ciabatta bread.

2. Fry two eggs.

3. Serve eggs over toast.

4. Make Creamy Dijon Cashew Sauce.

5. Pour sauce on toast and eggs.

Seriously, this breakfast hit the spot big time.  I was 100% content and the balance of macronutrients was perfection.

Carbs, fat, and protein – check, check, and check!

IMG_5180

I may have sliced an extra piece of bread off to wipe up the leftover sauce and egg.  All in the name of waste management (reduce, reuse, recycle!).

Runny yolk in 5, 4, 3, 2, aaaaaand…

There it is!

What is your favorite kind of bread?  Usually I prefer brown breads – whole wheat varieties with yummy grainy crusts.  I also think pumpernickel is fun every once in a while, but I couldn’t tell you the last time I bought a loaf (I’ve had a pumpernickel bagels at work though).  When it comes to white breads, I love Ciabatta the most (I also like Sourdoughs but it depends on how sour they are).  I used to like Focaccia too, but I’ve come to realize it results in digestive discomfort (mostly reflux/GERD).

For someone who isnt a fan of bread, and doesnt eat eggs. This actually looks really good lol. Something i would for sure make for my family!

I’m pretty sure hollandaise is just butter and egg. It isn’t healthy, but it isn’t going to kill you in moderation (except you don’t do dairy, right?). Your sauce sounds good too though. I love bread too- especially baguette. And Italian bread with sesame seeds.

  3. Carolyn @HealthKitten.com

I love just about every kind of bread other than pumpernickel. A good homemade sourdough or french loaf are probably my favorites: warm with a smear of butter. Yum.

I can’t stand hollandaise sauce! My husband thinks I’m a weirdo, but that’s nothing new! LOL!

Semifreddi’s ciabatta! When I lived up north, I’d walk super fast over to the town grocery store (which was like 2 blocks away) to make sure I’d get a loaf before they ran out. And then I’d plan my next meal around the bread lol.

I love Eggs Benedict but I have been struggling to get a good home made recipe for Hollandaise sauce so I will give this one a try. nothing says Happy Saturday morning to me like a good old brunch:)

    Are you not vegan anymore?

Ciabatta is AWESOME. I usually go with whole wheat or whole grain, though. But man, fresh ciabatta is so good.

  8. Tasha @ Dine & Dash

not an Eggs benedict fan but I do love fried egg and bread! planning a trip to SF in April. I’ll have to try that bakery.

  9. Mattie @ Comfy and Confident

I loveeeee bread. Good bread. Homemade hearty bread. I am a big sucker for French bread. But I also love seedy grainy bread too. All bread. I just love it.

Perfect post to read as I sit having my last piece of Turkish bread before my flight to the Bay Area tomorrow! Love Semifreddi’s!

  11. Jamie @ Don't Forget the Cinnamon

Mmm I’ve never made a sauce to put on my eggs before–sounds yummy! And my favorite types of bread are whole wheat cinnamon raisin walnut, maple oat walnut, and pumpernickel!

I once saw a cooking demonstration on making hollandaise sauce–it was basically a dietitian’s nightmare. I don’t think we’re missing much.
My bread obsession these days is a bread I found at the Whole Foods bakery–“Prairie Bread.” All I know is that it has all sorts of seeds on the crust (think flax, pumpkin, sunflower) and is dangerously addictive.

  13. Sophie @ LoveLiveAndLearn

Mmm that looks delicious! I love my yoke runny!
    I love the simplicity of it – it’s a perfect lunch 🙂
I love bread with a crunchy crust, soft springy inside, covered in seeds! I also love sweet bread like brioche, so good for french toast 🙂

  14. Lou

I love a good wholegrain sourdough…. chewy and satisfying. Pumpernickel and rye are always yum. Love your cashew dijion sauce idea… Hollandaise makes me gag – and I’ve had to make about a billion litres of it in my time (cafe cooking) ew ew ew – don’t understand the obsession with it.

  15. Emily

Ahhh…I LOVE bread. I don’t know how anyone couldn’t, to be completely honest. Crazy, crazy people.
My all-time favorite bread is a 6-grain loaf that I can only get at my Farmer’s Market. No preservatives, no sugar, and it’s vegan. Not to mention, the slices are suuuper thick and fluffy and it tastes amazing. I could eat it forever…
Good thing I’ll be going to the Farmer’s Market on Sunday!

  16. Sarah B @ Bake + Bike

Dijon cashew sauce sounds infinitely superior to Hollandaise 🙂

I’m all about a fried egg on toast for breakfast these days, which is strange ’cause I’m usually such an oatmeal devotee.

This is my favorite bread maker recipe for bread. I use multigrain flour and in four hours I have a perfectly crispy loaf of bread! Whenever I make it, our family just tears chunks of it off as it cools. I may need to buy another 3 breadmakers to keep up! Bread is definitely a necessity in our house!

  31. Elise (Post author)

haha. my coworkers feel the same.

  32. Elise (Post author)

    no dairy for me.

i think i need to make a loaf with sesame seeds on the crust next. sounds so mmmm…

  33. Elise (Post author)

you dont like bread???? oh my gosh. i couldnt live without it i dont think.

  34. blumenband

Hollondaise sauce is often served over asparagus. But I don’t like it, because it is mostly made of butter and egg yolk.
And I’m a weirdo that doesn’t like egg yolk… I never did, but recently I discovered the benefits of egg white 🙂

Bread. I love bread. Maybe it’s just predestinated because I’m german. And as you all know, Germany is THE bread nation 😀
We have so many different kinds of bread, I could not decide which one I like most. But I like Pumpernickel a lot. And I prefer rye bread over wheat bread.

  35. Katie @ Peace Love & Oats

Sourdough has always been a favorite of mine, although I just found out I’m gluten intolerant a couple months ago… Sadness…
