Stretching soup

I figured a break from DC posts was due.    This beautiful meal can be made effortlessly – and you probably have all the ingredients in your pantry already! Who doesn’t have a few cans of soup lying around?  Or (brown) rice.     It doesn’t really matter what soup you use.  Anything bean or lentil based is perfect.  But that’s not to say a chunky vegetable and tomato soup wouldn’t work wonderfully as well.  I’m partial to Dr. McDougall’s because they are vegan (many are gluten free too) and I like supporting his efforts to… Read more >

Blooming health

Is it really April?  Seems like I was just saying that about March. This past month was pure madness though…moving apartments, a funeral, Kyle’s birthday, ExpoWest, Seinfeld standup, Laura’s last days in the US, a few trips to Nor Cal, antibiotics… I’d really love to finally get settled in April. As a way to encourage me to write about more than food (aka self-reflect) I signed up for the Health Activist Writers Month Challenge (#HAWMC).  You can join me if you’d like.  I’m not sure I’ll be doing every single one because it seems like… Read more >

Lacking wisdom and solids

Last week I was Kyle’s designated driver.  Happy hour with the guys?  Nope. Getting up before the sun is the opposite of a happy hour.  Especially when you are driving a grumpy patient who hasn’t eaten in several hours.  I didn’t want to rub in my ability to drink, so I held off on the coffee. After Kyle went into the procedure, I went to the family waiting area.  I had planned on walking to Starbucks, but the nurse came to get me a mere 15 minutes later.  Speedy surgeon much? Everything went perfectly well,… Read more >

Home is where the health is

Whenever I go home to visit my parents I’m reminded about how lucky I am to have been raised with health in the forefront.  The importance of eating well and staying active was a given, so I have never seen wellness as a chore.  Eating balanced meals and participating in sports were, quite simply, just the norm.  I now know that I was very fortunate to have grown up this way.  Thank you mom and dad!  Prior to my arrival, my mom had been to TJs to restock the bar stash.    And hummus stash…. Sample Size Me

To say I scored in the swag department would be a gross understatement… This weekend I hit the natural foods jackpot! If you take a peak in one of the FIVE bags above, you’d see a little something like this… Sample size me! The fact that I was fairly picky in which products I opted to take samples of should be an indication of the quality of the entire event.  Shocking as it may be, I did eat actual meals in between the massive amounts of samples.  I already shared with you Friday’s lunch event,… Read more >
