Philly: Old Nelson on the go

After brunch, my parents had to head to the airport, but Kyle and I still had a few hours to kill. We filled the time with a long stroll through campus followed by a trip to the 30th street train station.  We bought SEPTA tickets to the airport and food for the flight.  I’m sorry (but not really?) to say, I didn’t make into a Wawa over the weekend.   For non-Philly readers, I’d liken the chain to 7-Eleven, but for me the nostalgia of getting both coffee and soft pretzels is what makes the… Read more >

Making a salad a meal

Hi, I’m in a salad rut.  [never a bad thing]   As I’ve repeatedly blogged about, I’m a bit of a prep queen.  Whenever I know I have several shifts in a row, I make sure to prepare healthy and flexible food options ahead of time.  I hate coming home to an empty fridge (and after 12+ hours on my feet, I definitely don’t have the energy to start cooking a meal from scratch).  This week’s examples: Lentils & wheat berries.  [Soaking on stand-by] Veggies. Extra food & extra coworker time

The word “leftovers” implies the portion in question was at some point unwanted.    When you feast on farm fresh fare, this is most definitely not the case.  But (shocking as it may seem) there was food left over from dinner.   Swiss chard, grilled avocado, grilled bell peppers, and grape tomatoes (all from the farmer’s market), red quinoa, and vegan sausages.  For those who asked (all two of you), both Kyle and I looooved them.  I am typically skeptical of faux meat products, but Field Roast Grain Meat Co. has really legit ingredients.  We… Read more >

Carlsbad weekend

Some peeps who follow me on twitter know that my weekend was full of wedding festivities.  It was so fun to get away for a few days and celebrate the marriage of close friends.  Last August, David was one of Kyle’s groomsmen…and this time around Kyle was in David’s wedding party.  Backing up to Thursday real quick.    This was mostly a day of recovery for me.  My neck and back were still achy, so shopping and packing were my “exercise” for the day.  The reason the bed is a mess is because I freaked… Read more >

Expo Explosion

Imagine a Whole Foods the size of 15 football fields…now imagine browsing it’s aisles for two days straight…now imagine representatives from every product giving your samples of their latest and greatest to try (for free!)…and THAT, my friends, is EXPO WEST. In other words, hippie heaven. Friday started bright and early as Kyle and I made our way to Anaheim to register and all that jazz.  And before we knew it, the doors pearly gates opened and BAM! Instantly we were slammed with people pushing samples at us…nibbles and bites of savory, creamy, sweet, smooth,… Read more >
