Flo’s Birthday

Florence Nightingale that is!

Not exactly a major holiday, and probably not on the “normal” person’s radar, but tomorrow is her birthday and also the end of nurses week.

Speaking of which, you all were SO sweet with those comments about my job.  It’s nice to be able to talk about other parts of my life on a (mostly) food blog and know that readers aren’t snoozing (or scrolling) through it.

OK…now that the sappy stuff is over with and I’ve satisfied the quota for random trivia-of-the-day, I’ll move on to the comida.

What’s wrong with my frothing skillz, lately?  I guess too much is a better problem to have than not enough, right?  My coffee was great after I slurped up the excess.

I also had a huge plate of fruit for breakalicious, including the whole berry mafia, as well as apple and mango slices.

IMG_2386

I also had a blueberry chobz (my fave flava).

I’ve noticed a pattern in my cravings based on the time of the day.  Typically I want natural sweets in the morning (fruit, yogurt), salty and savory eats in the afternoon and night, and then more artificial sweets in the PM (dried fruit, carob).

Interesting, no? Any patterns or preferences you guys have noticed in your own meals?

Since I was up so freaking early (on my day off, grrr…), I was hungry again by 11.  So I snacked on some apple slices and more Za’atar hummus.  This is my second sabra Za’atar hummus in the last few days (obsession alert?)!!!

IMG_2388

I also popped a handful of the gooiest medjool dates EVER.

I decided to hit up the gym while I was rockin’ a dried fruit sugar high…

To be honest, it wasn’t my best sesh.  I did an hour of cardio, but it was low resistance and on the elliptical, and I felt like I was dragging the entire time.  Rather than suffer through additional exercises on the mat, I called it quits after stretching…what’s the point in laboring through it if I’m not being productive and not enjoying the endorphin high anyways.

Plus, I had lots of super important errands to do on the way home…

IMG_2391

…like replenish my sabra stash.  Duh!

I went with classic this time.  I also got a bunch of the best hummus scoopers (aka mushrooms).

IMG_2392

I couldn’t resist lathering it all over Alvarado Street bread slices, too.  Talk about mah-jah hummus cravings – I just couldn’t stop shoveling the chickpea love down my throat savoring this delicious hummus.

Eventually I showered and did some housework pretended to be a grown up.

For dinner I basically raided the fridge and pulled out every single thing that could be dipped in hummus, and proceeded to make hummus soup of it all.

If it were socially acceptable I’d freakin’ bathe in hummus.

Get ready for an insane montage…

Cukes.  Snow peas.

Newman’s Own organic Soy Crisps.  YUM!!  These were light and airy, but still quite flavorful.  I ate the entire bag in one sitting though, so I don’t think I’ll buy them again.  They are way too good to have only a few (or any portion) of.

More Alvarado Street carbo loading…and another apple.

Finally, I reached the coveted heel piece of bread…yes, I finished both the loaf of bread AND the tub of hummus.  To anyone else, this would be worrisome…but to me it was a relief

Sometimes I get carried away and it takes a trash bag full of several empty containers to snap me out of it – pathetic I know, but true, and if there is one thing I am on this blog, it is honest.

So there you have it.  My dinner was a carb-fest, and not so balanced, but it’s what I wanted, so that’s that.

IMG_2400

I still had dessert of course.  Where would I be without carob covered raisins (or as Caroline calls them “bunny poo”).

Have I hit 5000 kcals for the day yet?  Pretty sure that’s an affirmative.

I have intense hummus cravings too. Have you made your own yet? And to get to the heal of the bread I will take all the slices out of the bag, take the heal, and then put them back in.

I definitely know what you mean about snack cravings at certain times of day…in the mornings I typically want cold/sweet snacks like yogurt and fruit, but by 4pm or so, I’m looking for more substantial, like pb and graham crackers. I ALWAYS want sweet snacks though!

Hummus and apples is apparently a combo I need to try, I’ve seen several people do it!

  5. Priyanka

I love Hummus! The Apple and hummus combo sounds amazing!

  6. runsarah

I am the same way! I love having fruits etc in the AM but I want an artifically sweet dessert in the PM.

You are turning into my source of nurse info–I impressed my sister last week by wishing her a happy nurses’ week. (She works in the NICU at our children’s hospital). Now I’ll have to bust out the Flo trivia too:)

I’m so depressed I’m out of Sabra. I willing to risk throwing my back out again to put Livy in the car to go get more. Then I’ll have to pawn this other kind off of Gracie. Poor girl.

  12. K from ksgoodeats

Call me craze but I just can’t hop on the hummus/apple wagon. I stick to the shrooms 😉 – I wrote that before I got to your hummus/shroom plate! That’s why I love ya!!

“I basically raided the fridge and pulled out every single thing that could be dipped in hummus” That is exactly how I construct my ‘meals’! I did sweet potatoes with hummus last night – it was glorious.

  13. Nicole (anotheronebitesthecrust.wordpress.com)

Oh man, your coffee looks outstanding. The overflowing frothy goodness is making me want to run out an get one! My morning coffee just isn’t cutting it!

About your question on how I found the race: I just use Active.com to find out about different races. There are also email lists you can sign up for to alert you of other races. I’m always searching to find what’s in my area!

    b. OH MY GOD. THIS POST WAS ABSOLUTE TORTURE.
i am all out of hummus and am not allowing myself to go to the grocery store since i am headed home for the summer on friday. i ran out last night and i already have the SHAKES. oh my god. i wont be able to make it.

  17. SunshineACH

Sticking with the hummus addiction–my latest lunch obsession is lightly toasted Ezekial seeded wheat bread, meunster cheese slices, hummus and spinach. So warm and hummus-y (yup, I used that as a word)healthy and yummy. Just had one and already thinking about it again…

  18. Thinspired

I’ve never really thought about what time of day I have certain cravings! I definitely know I love fruit in the morning, and I tend to want sugar at night. Salt is pretty much always acceptable 😉

  19. Quinn

Sometimes you just have to give in. I am more of a heavy carb lover at the beginning of the day, and then tend to want less as the day goes on.

And I know what you mean about wanting that crap out of the house. Even if it’s three more servings in one – it’s gone!

  20. Courtney

Okay, kinda weird comment (and I can’t believe I noticed), but I love how you slice your apples! Not in the traditional wedges, but in bigger rounds? Very photogenic :o)

And, can I just say, the gooier the dates the better, in my opinion! YUM!
