Food (with a side of drama)

Hey HEY Hey!  Long time no see…

I know, my bad.  I didn’t mean to leave you high and dry, but sometimes I get soopah stressed.  When that happens, unfortunately, the blog is the first to take a seat on the sidelines…

It all started to pile up last weekend.  There were actually a few different factors contributing to this, but I will only get to part of that now.

I was really busy and unable to get my gym time in, which doesn’t matter when it’s one day, but after a few I start to feel a bit anxious.  I don’t consider myself a workout-a-holic, but let’s be real, I AM a gym rat.  Make no mistake, I have a serious addiction to the high I get from my sweat sessions.  I enjoy cardio, but even more, I enjoy pushing myself to train for races, and then seeing the results.  I don’t think there is a comparable feeling to crossing a finish line.  It’s just pure love.  So, while I don’t think my gym addiction a problem per se, I do think I need to work how I adapt to changes that prevent me from exercising the way I want.

Anyways.  In addition to my exercise falling by the wayside, my grocery shopping and kitchen stocking did too…foodie fail 🙁

I HATE starting a long stretch of work days without adequate food prep.  It is ridiculous.  I know how limited my food options are for lunch if I don’t pack things myself, and I know how tired and starving I am when I get home.  So really there is no excuse for starting the week behind.  As if Mondays aren’t bad enough on their own…

Here’s what I managed to scramble together.

Carrot cake Clif bar: didn’t love it, didn’t hate it, but it held my appetite.

The salad was a mere THREE ingredients, including spinach, BN squash, and raisins.  I love squash and raisins together.  The spinach was purely for roughage purposes 😉

Please note the lack of hummus.  No wonder my head was in a fog.

Yes, three bars.  I had nada in the fridge, so I turned to Odwalla, Clif and Luna for the time.  The Peanut Butter Pretzel Clif MoJo was amaze, as usual.

The salad was the taste bud shocker of the day.  I honestly have no clue how this came out so well considering how haphazardly it came to being.  I was literally scrounging the fridge for anything I could find and managed to put together a semi-decent dish.  The black beans were made from their dried form (in bulk a few days ago).  I also swiped a tomato, a WHOLE yellow bell pepper, and romaine lettuce from Kyle.

I made it to the store on the way home from work, so this lunch didn’t suck as bad.  I l-o-v-e honey wheat pretzel twists and they are the perfect dip vehicle for hummus (along with the carrot sticks).

Finally some chickpea love in my life!!!!

This salad was a version of the previous, with chickpeas and shredded carrots instead of bell pepps.

Dried pears.  You guys!  These were divine.  So chewy and yum.  Super sweet, too, so just a few go a long way…

The Peanut Toffee Buzz Clif bar delighted my taste buds AGAIN.  The saying is true, if it aint broke…  So when it comes down to it, Clif and Odwalla will remain my go-to bars.  That, and Dive bar ;)    Yeah, that’s wassup.

I’ll save the rest of the drama fo yo mama (for now)…because there are SO many peeps in town that I can’t wait to meet.  Foodies unite in NYC.  Holler!

You sound a lot calmer than I do when I can’t get to the gym… I would totally have been on the warpath by now.

And you did very well for having an empty refrigerator… so resourceful of you. 😉

Awww…I am sorry! I am glad you let the blogging go–I am sure it takes a lot of your time! Life is SO stressful, and when I don’t get my gym time I am a total pissy brat, so I 100% get it. It puts me in SUCH a foul mood…I hate it! I hope things get back to “normal” for you soon and that you get back into the swing of things!

And just because I am glad you got a break, it doesn’t mean I didn’t miss ya! I was so happy to see you posting 🙂

While I think 3 ingred salads are muy triste–BNUT & raisins sound aaaaamazing! I must try that.

And samesies to the carrot cake clif. I bought like 10 at once assuming they’d be good. After the first one, I started heating them up and putting cream cheese on them. If you have a cream cheese substitue, I’d HIGHLY recommend this.

sometimes i skip working out when i’m in a pissy mood at 6am, but then i’m always in a worse mood at 6pm and am kicking myself in the ass for not exercising. what a conundrum.

if you love bnut squash and raisins, try bnut squash and dried cranberries. amaze.

have a bitchin weekend with your blog homies! i wish i could join in, but i’ll be in nj and i’m broke as a joke. take lots of pics so i can live vicariously through you!

Thanks for swingin by today. And I cannot believe your family grows vineyard grapes. OMG will you marry me if you dont marry Kyle? I seriously feel in another lifetime I will live in Nor Cal on a vineyard raising hippy children and doing yoga and making wine. I would lovvvvvve to be transported to your family’s locale and see how and what you do. Wow. What an amazing thing. Holy crap. You are my new hero!!!!

Sorry things are so stressful for you right now, and you’re welcome about my prior comment. And it still holds. I hope you’re taking care of yourself and who cares about blogging, life is out there. And this will all still be here once your life is calmer.

And in the meantime, yeah, the whole world is in NYC right now and I cannot believe you and Katie went to Babycakes (from her blog). Damn…..that is my dream dessert spot. Sigh. Eat some for me!

Oh my, E-love! Sorry to hear about the craziness!! You need to SERIOUSLY stock pile some hummus to turn that frown upside down.

I’m glad to hear I’m not the only blogger who wasn’t head over heels for that carrot cake Clif. I had a bar heavy day today like you did and my thought is…any bar, whether it’s of the drinkable or edible kind, is a good bar. Hope you get some R&R + sweat sesh time 🙂

Yikes, sorry you’ve been so busy and exhausted, baby pie. Your portable salads look a lot like mine: throw together whatever’s in the fridge and hope for the best. Yours always look yummy, though!

    V. excited to see you Friday!

have fun meeting those other bloggers! how fun! hmm i never thought to dip my honey wheat pretz (tell me you’ve seen that Friends episode where Joey says all the best foods are one syllable…) in hummus! i must try!

  12. broccolihut

Hope your stress subsides ASAP. I get cranky too if I don’t get to the gym–it’s been bad enough this week that I can’t run thanks to my nasty cold.
I need to try that Peanut Toffee Buzz again…

Fellow gym rat here! I haven’t been able to go the gym for the past 2 days and my head is spinning. Luckily I’m going today at lunch. You are SO right about the super good feeling you get after a hard workout, there is no replacing it. Your meals all look delicious, though!

  17. Lara (Thinspired)

I am finally making black beans from “scratch” too! Do you know how long they last in the fridge before I should start to worry?
Dried pears on a salad sounds delicious. Fruit on a green salad is one of my favorite things 🙂

  18. elise

hmmm…mine were in the fridge two weeks and i was a bit nervous on the last day, but they were fine. if they are rinsed and drained before you tuperware them they will last longer. dont let em stew in their own juices, ya know? (sounds so gross)

  19. elise

thanks! i was forced to get a little creative…but it all worked out. when i walked through the gym doors i felt like belting out “reunited and it feels so gooood!!” (but that would be weird…haha)

  20. elise

i JUST saw the smores bar for the first time yesterday! omg. so excited. i will def try them 🙂

  21. elise

boo. hate when i get sick! hope you get better and get your cardio on soon!!

  24. elise

the vineyard is awesome…and it was really fun growing up to get out of school for things like “crush” in october. now its fun for different reasons 😉 (wino alert!!)

  25. elise

yeah, it was good, but i have other faves. any clif is a winner in general though…

  26. elise

bummer! i so wish you could come 🙁 ill wave at you (or in the general jerz direction) from my rooftop this weekend.

Oh my little bug a boo. Are you totally stressed to the max or what?! PLZ fuggetabout the blog and live your life as needed! Yes, writing a flog is a total blast and we LUFF you for doing so. Yes. But true addicts (ahem) have the archives to turn to on days where being a superwoman ER nurse, partner to a hottie, and athlete extraordinaire take over. I mean, on the real.
That PB pretzel bar is Rob’s fave. He actually puts jelly on top. So cute 🙂
I love dried pears too! However, I seem to have this problem when I eat them…something switches in my head and I’m literally unable to stop eating until the bag is empty, at which point I’m at high risk for eating the bag and the napkin and the receipt and any other products in my line of vision. Oh no!

  28. julie

i missed you! glad you’re gonna have a fun weekend! I had that luna pb cookie bar and I feel like mine tasted like soap haha weird.

I’m the sameee way with the gym! I understand how you get upset if you haven’t been in a while. And no humdids? DAMN girl you need a vaca!
