Happy-ending salad

I’m in a sassy little mood, hence the non-PG title.  You’ll see what I am referring to with today’s dinner…(I hope?)

But first, I’m going to rewind to Sunday night.  Because of the ree-dik bus ride back from Atlantic City, I was too lazy upload photos…so sorry for the delay…I know you all were on edge waiting for me to reveal the night’s eats, right?  Well, don’t get too excited, I had a pretty lame-a$$ meal.

IMG_3747

On the left: broccoli salad, shredded carrot, and tofu scramble.  On the right: steamed veggies with avocado

IMG_3746IMG_3745

ZOOM you ask?  Happy to oblige.

IMG_3748

Fruit-ful dessert.  Yellow centered plum (I think I like the darker ones better), honeydew, and bluebeezies – all from the local Jersey farms.  See, they have much more than trashy housewives over there!  No offense NJ-ers ;)

While chomping down my bowl of berries and things, we watched True Blood and can I just say, that Tara chick really needs to lay off the ‘roids.  Girl’s got enough musculature to take down Jillian Michaels.  She’s like an even beefier Serena Williams, if that’s possible.

Bed time came as soon as I hit publish.  I was so freakin’ tired, I was out before my head hit the pillow.

I set my alarm for 9 am this morning to try and give myself a few extra zzzz’s, but I still woke up at 8 and was unable to get back to sleep.

IMG_3751

This article really hit home.  Poor guy was writing in about his girlf, who was so obsessed with exercising, she was grumpy and snapped at him if she didn’t get her cardio on, and her life (and thus his) practically revolved around visiting the gym…sound familiar?  Well, I definitely took the tips to heart since I’ve been known to be a little, hmmm, how shall I say this, anxious when I don’t get my endorphin high.  Ok, ok, I don’t think I’m that bad (anymore) – but there was definitely a time in my life when my relationship with exercise wasn’t healthy.  Working out was more like an addiction than a desire to get fit.  Now, I’m (more) aware of the importance of balance.  I get my heart rate up for fun and to feel good.  What can I say?  I’m still a work in progress…

IMG_3754IMG_3750

Another fruit filled, Gingerberry Kombucha filled morning.  I was sloshy for a while, but this combo really gets the system moving (TMI? my bad).

The day continued in a VERY snack-alack-a-ding-dong fashion for the rest of the day.  I tried several new things, so brace yourselves for reviews aplenty.

IMG_3755

Gardenburger’s Black Bean Chipotle veggie burgers

IMG_3756 IMG_3757

Not too bad I guess…sorry the protein stats got cut off…there’s 5 g per patty if you care.

IMG_3759

I liked these MUCH more than the last Gardenburger flavor I tried.  Unlike those, these weren’t trying to be beef-like.  They were corn, bean, and veggie filled, with a little bit of spice.  Perfect!

IMG_3761

I hired the veggie patty for the starring role in my wrap.  What a success story, lemme tell ya…roasted red pepper hummus, Gardenburger, spinach, and clover sprouts.  YUM!

IMG_3763

That’s a wrap!

IMG_3764IMG_3762

I had some baby carrots and more hummus on the side.  Is there such a thing as too much hummus?  Lord, I hope not.

As delish as the meal was, I still wasn’t satisfied.  No clue why – just one of those days…

My stomach pulled an Oliver Twist on me begging for more.  I gave in of course, I always do.  I feel miserable and devoid of energy if I remain unstated.  So I basically just had another lunch.  Here’s round two:

IMG_3766

Another Gardenburger, half a red bell pepper, clover sprouts, and TWO different flavors of hummus.

That did the trick 🙂

Lunch dessert was a very sweet new flavor of KombuchaMystic Mango!

IMG_3767IMG_3768

This was not as fizzy as the other Kombucha’s and was more like a mango juice.  It was good, of course, but clocked in at 100 kcals, which is more than I usually like in my beverages.  I don’t want to drink a meal unless there is more substance behind it (ie smoothies, green juices, etc.)…either way it provided the hydration and sugar boost to get my butt in gear.  RUN time!!!

I grabbed my iPod and set out to do a loop in the park.  After half a block, I realized the humidity was NOT working in my favor for the distance I had planned.  I scrapped my 8 mile route and went for a small 2 mile loop instead.  After I got back home, I pounded some H20, grabbed my gym pass, and went to finish off my corre in NYSC’s air conditioned haven.  4 miles on the elliptical later, I felt good and tired, and called it a day.

Kyle and I met up in mid-town and sweated our way back uptown, stopping for groceries on the way.  Fortunately, I had the presence of mind to leave the AC on, so it felt like (an ice cold) heaven in the apartment when we got back.  I was tempted to shower again (I was THAT gross), but since I was wasting all my anti-green blasting the AC, I decided to force Kyle to simply deal with my “glow.”

Massage parlor inspired massaged kale din-din.

IMG_3775

Apparently, man-handling your lettuce is all the latest craze…so I decided to get on board and try it for myself.  More on that later…but first, let me introduce you to the ingreds in my BLT salad.

IMG_3459IMG_3769

I first heard of Dulse Flakes on Gena’s blog when she wrote about raw BLT’s and how the flakes have a bacon-like flavor to them.  I also got some LightLife “bacon” as back-up for additional texture.

IMG_3774

Also in the bowl: kale, cherry tomatoes, clover sprouts, and half an avocado.

At first, the dulse flakes were a bit off-putting.  They smelled and looked like fish food…but Gena doesn’t lie, they DO remind me of bacon (to be fair, I’ve never had real bacon before in my life).  I also had a few slabs of “bacon” chopped up on top…and let’s be honest, you pretty much know what you’re going to get with that.  Sure, it was salty and processed-tasting, but aside from that, it was yummy.

IMG_3776

NOW, as for all this MASSAGING going on in the blog world…I can’t help but ask, “what’s all the fuss about?”

Basically, I felt like I was doing something dirty AND wasting precious avocado.  Not a fan.  I got avocado in every leafy kale crevice, which I suppose is the idea, but I also got it in places I didn’t want it (ma bling bling).  Good thing diamonds are forever 🙂

Sticky fingers aside, it was worth it (twss).  [I just deleted several sentences that came out too crude sounding – massaging your dinner is DIRTY]

But seriously, this was a really good salad – like a healthy BLT with both my old favorite green ingredient, avocado, and my new favorite green ingredient, kale.

IMG_3778

More hummus?  Why not.

After crunching through way more carrots than pictured above, I did laundry and laughed my a$$ off watching the Comedy Central roast of Joan Rivers…seriously, I DIED!!

IMG_3749

Dessert is getting a bit repetitive in the hippie household, so I apologize, but summer time fruit is just too darn good!

*In random blog news, my friend sent me this article and I found it very interesting.  Check it out.

wow you make your wraps like theyre professionally made! 😀

i’m sorry for asking, but do you mind posting those how-to-stop-being-an-exercise-addict tips? i’m having a bit of a trouble myself lately and would greatly appreciate it!!

  2. elise

Sure!! Here’s how to break from the addiction:

    1. Ask yourself: What are you running from? WOrk on any underlying issues of depression, anxiety, self-confidence, or body image.
    2. Change the “more is better” thinking to one of quality working out smartly.
    3. Have fun and participate in group forms of exercise, thus reducing the drive for perfectionism.
    4. Work with a fitness expert who can develop a healthy exercise program for you and see that you stick with it. Set reasonable goals and limits.
    5. Strive for balance in all areas of life – work, family, social, exercise.
    6. In your free time do something unrelated to exercise and fitness (ie movies, friends, the beach, reading).

    Hope that helps!!

  3. snackface

Whoah! I meant to comment on the “I Love Lucy” post, but when I clicked over you had this gem up for us! Love it.

But about the last one, you are too good for sharing your road snacks. I get greedy with those. But I guess you are going to marry the man, so maybe sharing comes into play.

Ummm thank you for making me feel better about the Tofurkey I bought over the weekend. Sometimes you just need a little salty faux-meat. I have to try that bacon sometime. And you’ve never had real bacon? Amazing. I don’t think you’re really missing much. You only need the faux.

And I’m with you on the drinks exceeding 100 cals. I don’t like it. Gingerberry Kombucha all the way.

I hope you have a marvelous Monday night and Tuesday morning!

  4. Hangry Pants

Only offensed that you referred to me as a NJ-er. I am a Rhide Islander only.

  5. broccolihut

I should read that article about exercise obsession…sometimes I think I am a bit dependent on my running high.
Haha I laughed out loud at your stomach going all “Oliver Twist” on you!

  6. Sarah (LovIN My Tummy)

Chris sent me that article too. Is he your friend? 😉

I’m loving all the dirty massage talk. I only wish I could have read what you would’ve wrote.

  7. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga)

I am gluten and soy free but that burger thingey looked pretty tastey and the wrap itself looked professional. Nice!

You’re the 2nd blog today I’ve read that shows one of those Synergy drinks. I have never had one. Guess I am living in the dark ages.

Nor have I had dulse flakes. I also adore Gena’s blogs, but I hate fishy flavored stuff. I used to eat fish but fishy….hmmm.

  8. carolinebee

ohh girl u know u are preachin to the choir when it comes to non-exercise grumpiness 😀 I totally need to work on it, and i’m lucky my family (aka momz) is so accomodating and basically knows I need an hour to myself to at least power walk or something so i’m not a raging beast! That’s awesome that your mate likes to bust a sweat with ya! Have a great week E-money and hopefully we shall convene on the East coast soon!?

  9. Abby

I kind of had the same feeling about the salad molestation craze–I don’t want to hide the avocado taste or flavor in any way. I like to see it and enjoy it (TWSS?). Anyway, totally hear you on the exercise thing, so I won’t go there.

Saw this article yesterday and thought of you. My thoughts are that 1) I was glad there was an article that actually supported the vegan/veggie lifestyle instead of slamming it and 2) that the standard American diet is most likely lacking in so many more vitamins and nutrients than the standard vegan diet, but it’s just accepted. Whatever.

  10. Gena (Choosing Raw)

Yum! So glad you tried the dulse, gorgeous!

  11. Courtney

Yum–I LOVE kale! I have been massaging it for a while now…wow that DOES sound weird! But I know you know what I mean 🙂 And if you are a new kale fan, then you HAVE to try that kale seaweed salad recipe! It is SO good!

I am super jealous of your AC…I don’t have AC, and lets just say that when I get back to my apt a gross sweaty mess from running or even just running errands on foot, it does NOT feel so hot to walk into the steam room/sauna that my apt has become in the 90 degree heat and humidity! Nasty!

Your fruit bowls always look SO good–never repetitive! And even if they were, so what?! Fruit is so delicious, it deserves its own bowl of deliciousness (twss)!

    Courtney

  12. Sarah W.

No offense but Tara looks FANTASTIC with all that muscle. I def don’t think she needs any MORE muscle, but I think she looks great with the amount that she DOES have 🙂 muscle/buffness is hot. skinny is not

  13. blueeyedheart

How did I miss that exercise obsession article?! (Or maybe I didn’t, and my brain is finally going…)

I definitely like red plums better than yellow… but I’ve never managed to figure out how to determine the difference, and so I don’t buy plums. Sad.

    <3 <3

  14. julie

get it gurrrrrrl. work that kale.

are you sayin you’re getting paid by Walmart to do your thang with Kale & cado..
    i keeed i keeed

UGH I did NOT see preseason. And I usually start to get excited around now because the Jets used to have their preseason practices over at Hofstra and you KNOW this girl used to go stalk out her man Chaddy P. But then he left 🙁 and then they moved their preseason somewhere else and now I’m left on my own trying to figure out how to be the trophy wife to Mark Sanchez.

  15. elise

dude – kombucha will change your life…in that you will fall in love with the flavor and then be resigned to having to shell out $4 for a bottle of swamp water for the rest of your life…learn from my addiction – stay away from it! haha

  16. elise

i agree with you that muscles are hot…but it looks like she spends 10 hours in the gym each day – and something tells me between working at sam’s and being controlled by maryann’s mind tricks, she doesn’t exactly have extra time to spare to moonlight as a bodybuilder. see, im ALL about plot continuity 😉 haha of course getting her freak on while under that black eyed spell could be good exercise i guess…

  17. elise

mark sanchez most likely has lots of diseases, so you can consider your lackluster stalker efforts a win.

  18. VeggieGirl

THAT’S MY DULSE!!!!!! Well actually, I buy the dulse STRIPS, not the flakes. I have about 5 bags in my pantry, and go through them VERY quickly, haha 😀

  19. elise

yeah!!! i guess ill have to try strips next – although i doubt ill get through this bag as fast as you go through yours 😉

  20. healthy ashley

I think all your food looks awesome!

As for that “Obsessed with Exercise” article… I think I have a healthy obsession with exercise. I’m still happy on my off days, but I love working out because I know how good it makes me feel!

  21. elise

that sounds like a perfectly healthy relationship…some people (ahem, me) on the other hand have been known to get a bit upset in the past about having too many “off days” – im not saying tantrum throwing, but anxious, yes. now that i work, i know the reality of balance. i never workout on days i work, i just can’t (helloooo, 12+ hour shifts – not conducive to extra cardio). and im okay with it. but i wasnt always so zen about my workout ways…

  22. elise

haha – ok ok – you are right. the Jerz should be so lucky to be able to claim you…unless you develop an accent and ditch mark for an italian mobster, i think youre safe from the stereotype.

  23. lowandbhold

Hahaha, I love that you just put that out there. I haven’t invaded my kale’s personal bubble yet, but as I’ve watched this trend pick up in the blog word I kept wondering: Where are the TWSS jokes? Does no one find this behavior a little lude?

I’m glad you filled the void for me.

  24. Erica

Too much hummus is so NOT possible 😉 I still haven’t tried the Kombucha, I need to get on that train.

I think I have a little (ok maybe more than a little) or an exercise addict in me! I am also a work in progress.

Glad you got out of the heat and into the gym! Sometimes the hummidty can be just tooooo much in the summah.

I could never get sick of wonderful summer fruit desserts- they are just heavenly.

I could not agree more with your thoughts on the exercise article I posted!

  25. Missy Maintains

I go through that exercise addict phase every now and then! There are times when I feel guilty for not going but other times where I just don’t care and listen to my body! And yayy True Blood! I found a website last night to watch all the episodes on so I am gettin all caught up! I need to try this massaging kale thing one day!

  26. Biz

    Ha – love the title!

Great idea to add the garden burger to your wrap – it looks amazing!

I prefer Boca – but when you load it up with ketchup, mustard and dill pickles, it doesn’t really taste like anything!

  27. Quinn

OMG, so many things to respond to per usual. It’s like you get in my head about stuff – and not in the weird Miley Cyrus stalker kinda way either.

    1. What paper was that article in? I’d love to read it.
    2. Love, love, love True Blood, but have a little bit of beef with it this season. I agree about Tara being ridiculously jacked – it’s a little mantastic. And she’s sort of pissing me off this season – well actually every season. And what is up with freaky goddess lady Maryann? She is annoying the sh!t outta me.
    3. I have been wondering about the massaged kale craze. Can’t say I’m on board, but I’m supportive of the others who try it.
    4. Yes, I saw the mini Sabras! They are uh-mazing!
    5. I am investing in mace for the runs.

  28. JB

i’m obsessed with true blood! and i know–tara is ripped! haha. by the way, i massage my kale to get rid of the bitterness and because i like the texture of massaged kale. but i never massage it with avocado! if i want avocado on my salad, i put it on afterwards. try massaging the kale with just a bit of sea salt, and THEN tossing everything else in afterwards. that’s what i do! by the way, your garden burger wrap looks great. and no, you’re right, there is no such thing as too much hummus. 🙂

  29. elise

omg, thank you for clearing this up…i was seriously wondering HOW this craze was continuing…im definitely going to try that next time…haha

  30. elise

the article was in monday’s metro…pretty sure you get the same edition in DC as i do in NY…just in case, the bullet points are in the comments section above since a reader asked for the main tips.

  31. ksgoodeats

Those trashy housewives have hot sons! I’ll take ’em 🙂

Non-beef like veggie burgs get two big thumbs up from your girl! Have you tried Amy’s Bistro? They’re scrum-didli-umptious!

Where do you find your mini tubs of Sabra? I’ve been trying to find them because hello, hummus to go? Yes, please.

  32. janetha

i like the sassy h squared hippie 🙂 i can rest easy now that i have seen your scramble and veggies, thank god! ii agree, tara is ripped and i also find it a little creepy that she looks as though she could be egg’s twin sister. i guess anything goes with that show! i agree with you on drinking calories. it just is not worth it to me. but then again water is my favorite drink so i am set in that dept. i tried the kombuchas and they tasted like wine gone bad, i couldnt hang! hahaha.. good twss and i wish you hadnt backspaced the other stuff i am sure it was comedy! this is longer than my basset hound so i will shut up now. xo!

  33. Lara (Thinspired)

Looks like an interesting article about the over-exercising. I can’t say I have much experience with that, but I imagine that can definitely affect a relationship! Isn’t balance the hardest thing ever?!
Off to check out the mommy blogger article. Hey, that could be us one day!

  34. lilveggiepatch

Thanks for your thoughts on manic exercising… hits home for a lot of us, I’m sure! And I’m SO glad you didn’t run 8 miles in this disgustingly thick heat. It’s very dangerous, and I need you around for our dates.

  35. Allison

that bowl of fruit looks so colorful and happy! love it!

  36. Cassie

I’m ALWAYS looking for new things to do with a Gardenburger and that wrap look DELICIOUS! I’m gonna make it right about now…

  37. elise

i know right? since im not about to run with a freakin camel-pack ill stick to the gym when its this humid.
