If it’s midnight, is it still dinner?

I don’t know much about snowboarding jumps but Saun White’s triple McSwoopy Loop Double CrissCross Uppity looked infinitely cooler than any other athlete’s trick.  Wow.

Anyways, here are my fabulous work eats.

IMG_7303

Because of all the ah-maze comments you guys left me, I decided to give the oatmeal raisin GNU flavor & fiber bar a second shot, and I will definitely be getting some of the other flavors to try as well…it was definitely better than the ThinkThin bar I had.

IMG_7307

I bought a bunch of these ThinkThin nasties all at once (like months ago), and I am trying to use them up because they suck and they were pricey.  I really only got them because they kinda made me feel like I was eating Reese’s PB cups.  Only they leave my stomach feeling similar to how a Reese’s would, so it’s really not worth it.  I must be cray cray to continue to eat them.  I only have a few more though, so that’s a plus.

IMG_7304

Hey there you sexy salad you!  Believe it or not there was spinach buried beneath the brocc, carrots, pepitas and dried cranz

IMG_7306IMG_7305

The other tupp had more millet/squash lovin’ supplemented with dried cranz.  I ran out of delicata squash so this was butternut and it wasn’t nearly as tasty as yesterday’s delicata dish.  Seriously, I need to go out and get more now, I’m craving it hard.  Prepare yourself for a squashy future on HHH.  Ok?  Disclaimer done.  Now you’ve been warned.

On a totally nonrelated tangent, I saw this Robert Frost poem on the subway today and liked it so much I thought I would share.

DUST OF SNOW

The way a crow
Shook down on me
The dust of snow
From a hemlock tree
Has given my heart
A change of mood
And saved some part
Of a day I had rued.

I love it.  My mood is very much affected by similarly random things…usually nature related.  In fact, the snow really does help in this terribly frigid winter weather because I can appreciate the beauty that pristine white snow offers 🙂

IMG_7332

Here’s a photo I snapped yesterday right outside my apartment – totally worth the numb fingers that resulted from it.

After work I headed to MSG to watch the Knicks play the Bulls.  I would rather have been watching the Olympics but you can’t pass up box seats.  Kyle’s job does have a few perks.  Too bad he had to work more from the apartment after the game (boo).

IMG_7325

My purse’s contents held me over through the game, but just barely.

IMG_7167

When I got home I wanted quick and easy.  This is what quick and easy looks like.

IMG_7168

Chik ‘n humm-diddly.

The best news was that the snowboarding half-pipe was just beginning when we arrived home.  Suh-weeeet.  Not so sweet was the fact that I was eating dinner at 11 pm, but whatever, I’m just going to gloss over that part.

IMG_7339

Once my appetite was relieved from it’s ravenous state…I made a big salad to fill the rest of my tum up with fiber.

Unfortunately, my stomach wasn’t satisfied, even after that beastly thing you see above.  Puzzled, I pulled out the big guns.

IMG_7326

Bread.  Beautiful, glorious bread.

IMG_7363IMG_7361

I got a sh!t ton of these Crazy Camel Dessert Hummus tubs in the mail a loooong time ago, and this flavor was the only one left.  Can you guess why?  Yeah, the name says it all.  Maple Walnut.  Gag me.

I detest walnuts and all walnuts flavors, so I made Kyle be my poison taste tester.  Turns out, the maple was the dominant flavor and I couldn’t even detect a hint of the icky walnut.  Phew.  It smelled and tasted just like maple syrup.  For a second I forgot I was eating bread and hummus and thought I was digging into a stack of pancakes with maple syrup.

The illusion didn’t last too long though, as there were definite chickpea chunks.  Now THAT’S my idea of dessert!

IMG_7360

Yeah, I had a few more pieces (three).

Eating past midnight isn’t typically my style.  I hate going to bed on a full stomach, but I think it’s worse going to bed on an empty stomach, so I’ll call this a win.  When do you have dinner?  Same time each day?  Depends on the day?  I remember living in Spain it took a while to get used to the late dinners, but once I got into the habit, it was cool.  Meals are such an affair in Europe, it’s wonderful.  When I got back to the US it took a while to readjust to the meal times.  Now (thanks to my job) I eat at completely unpredictable times.  (If) I get lunch, it’s whenever my patients are stable enough for me to step away.  And since I don’t get off work ‘til 7 pm, I don’t get home until 8ish which makes dinnertime fall somewhere between 8 and 9.  On days I don’t work, I am also all over the map.  Throughout the day I do much more snacking, but try to eat dinner around 7.  This means I can have dessert and not go to bed feeling full.

I love Robert Frost; my dad bought me an Frost Anthology as a congrats for completing my Masters degree present.

I hate eating late and going to bed on a full stomach too. But, like you, since doing nursing my meal times are all over the place so I tend to go with the flow alot more than I used to. Not sure how great it is for the IBS but what can you do?

I’m trying to write an essay on interprofessional working in healthcare at the moment and it’s SO boring that I’m just snacking the day away. Did you have to study interprofessional collaboration as part of your training?

  2. Michal

I am dying to try some of that dessert hummus its looks so yumm! 🙂

  3. Olga

Wow, Knicks box seats? That’s awesome! I mean, it’s the Knicks…but it’s box seats 🙂 Plus, they’re not too shabby this season!

I hate those ThinkThin bars too. The taste AND the name! hahah

  4. MarathonVal

Interesting about the hummus…. I tried to make a chocolate dessert hummus one time which was decent but I just couldnt get the chickpeas to blend up totally smooth in my FP…. maybe I’ll have to try this one again!

  5. Jenna

All depends on my schedule on when I eat!

  6. Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine

Dessert hummus? I want to try! I’ve always been interested in ThinkThin bars but I’m glad I know not to waste my money (I hate the name anyway!). I eat all my meals pretty early for some reason. Dinner is usually at 6ish, because I just get really hungry! And that leaves time for lots of snackage 🙂

  7. Serena

I got a free ThinkThin bar at WF this past summer and forgot about it in the car. By the time I remembered it was all gooey and soft…. It tasted just like a candybar, and I liked it at the time, but I also remember noticing how horrendously sweet it was, too.

I love your salads. They look so great all the time and make me want to go buy those ingreds and make the exact same ones as you. xD Sounds a bit creepy? lol

Also I have been dying to try Gnu bars but they don’t sell ’em where I live so I’d need to buy like a 12-pack…are they worth it?

  8. snackface

I was just thinking yesterday that the snow has become like a picture hanging in my room. It’s awesome and beautiful at first, but after a while I don’t even notice it. And then this individual snowflake fell on my black glove and I saw how picture-perfect that sucker was. CHEESE but it’s true!

Dinner for me depends on the day. Mondays I eat at 9pmish, but most days it’s either 6 or 7. And then I don’t really stop eating until I go to bed. I’ll only call that a “bad” habit when I’m no longer a student who stays up till 3:30am trying to finish major projects.

Hope you have a lovely day!! xoxoxo

  9. elleneatsbeats

That dessert hummus sounds interesting. I can’t imagine maple hummus. As far a GNU bars go, the orange cranberry is my favorite. It actually tastes like both flavors, and I LOVE the fiber content!

  10. Gabriela (froyolover)

Crazy Camel Dessert Hummus? Holy YUM!
    😀
    Loved absolutely all your eats!
Here, in Brazil, we´re used to have dinner around 8:30, 9pm. Lunch´s around 1, 1:30pm. So we usually have an aftenoon snack between those two meals, normally by 5pm. But that´s just the way we roll! 😉
I love trying new things for dinner, but I have to admit I´m pretty happy if the menu includes one on my favourites (like spinach quiche, or baked sweet potato, or black beans… Hehe).
    Have a great Wednesday!
    Kisses from a warm place,
    Gabriela

  11. Gabriela (froyolover)

    I mean… Thursday! Hahaha 😉

  12. Leena

i want to try that hummus so bad! there’s so many flavors that all sound so good! i wish i could find them at my grocery store!
i try not to eat dinner too late… i hate going to bed on a full stomach. i usually try to eat no later than 7, but sometimes the way my schedule can be, it winds up being later.

  13. maren

i think you’ll def like the gnu bars more once you try a few others. i love the banana walnut and cinnamon raisin.. the peanut butter, chocolate brownie, and orange cranberry are good too! i didnt know lemon ginger existed, ill have to try!

  14. jenngirl

On weekdays, I try to eat dinner around the hour of 7pm..that’s just how my eating schedule works out, and it still leaves me time for a nighttime snack before bed.

However, if I’m cooking with friends or out, dinner will definitely be later, but it’s events like this that are enjoyable and meant to be leisurely, so I’m okay with eating later…even though I’m usually starving. 🙂

  15. blueeyedheart

I see you read Poetry in Motion 😉 I liked that one too!

Going to bed on a full stomach is one of the most miserable experiences for me. Combined with the fact that I do not mentally like to eat late, and I try to get to bed at a decent hour, I like to be done with food by 7. Doesn’t always quite work.

    <3 <3

  16. Katie

With my new work schedule I’ve been eating earlier and earlier- usually between 6 and 7- but when I’m eating with other people (normal people) it’s usually around 8, at which point I am RAVENOUS.

  17. KathyR

I bought two of those Think Thin bars and choked them down. But if I had any more than that, I’d put them on a table somewhere with a “free bars” sign and just walk away!

Maple walnut hummus? I like maple. I like walnut. I like hummus. But maple walnut HUMMUS? Weird.

  18. Holly

e dog…the fact you dont like walnuts is shocking to me. i never would have guessed. its a good thing you redeemed yourself with the fab shaun white recap. i watched the video this morning – gah, the air! i wish i could do that.

    thinkthin=thinknasty.

and you know i am right on the same page with you with this whole winter thang. LET IT BE DONE.

    have a fab day sweets!

  19. Sarah

random question: what dressing to you usually use on your big ass lunch salads (if any)? i’m in a total salad dressing rut and can’t even think about the usual suspects anymore!

  20. elise

hey sarah – i usually just spritzs my lunches with Bragg’s the night before. i dont like dressing to make my salads soggy and since i pack them the night before, thats waaaaay too much time to marinate. at home though, once of my fave combos is apple cider vinegar/balsamic vinegar, honey mustard and agave – sometimes i use the mushy salad ingreds (like avocado) to coat everything though 🙂 hope that helps!

  21. lowandbhold

That hummus sounds fab. But I like walnuts.

Not a huge fan of those ThinkThin bars either.

  22. chuck

Hey there, I’m chuck the creator and maker of the dessert hummus. Sorry you don’t like walnuts. The chunks in the maple walnut is not chick pea, they are chopped walnuts. Just like the caramel apple has small diced apple in it. The almond has diced almonds in it as well. All for texture mostly. Most people use the M. walnut for breakfast. The product is growing fast and will be in many whole food stores in MA, CT and Maine by the end of Feb. You can also order it on line at desserthummus.com If you mention under commnets when order the words “chuck said I get a free tub” I will add a free bonus tub in with your order. There is a min. or 6 tubs to order because of the shipping cooler I have to pay for. However you can freeze the product so don’t worry about it going bad. Hope you all try it! contact me at fedbychuck@comcast.net if you wish. Thanks Chuck

  23. Adam

Ah man i didn’t know you hated walnuts, sorry! If it helps the orange-cran flavor is pretty decent too (Gnu Bars)… Other than Gnu Bars, i tried something new yesterday since i was able to get over to my second home (WF)… I saw tamari-roasted pumpkin seeds in the bulk aisle for 5.99 a pound and i had to get a ton! I thought of you because of your new found pepita addiction, and the verdict is that these are amazing! What sucked was that i could NOT find delicata squash at whole foods or trader joes… I will keep searching though because it looks tasty! As for my suppers, i usually don’t get home until around 7 or 7:30 so food doesn’t usually enter my mouth until around 8:30 or 9 on weekdays. It’s all good though because i also hate going to be on an empty stomach!

  24. Angharad

I eat at different times depending on the day too but I absolutely will NOT go to bed on an empty stomach. A reeeaaally heavy stomach feels so gross but a really empty one will keep me awake all night. Not cool. If I don’t want to get laden down then a bowl of yogurt/cereal/nut butter normally does the trick.

    Love the wintery photo!!

  25. Tara

What a beautiful picture of the snow!

  26. RawSierra

Hi! I love reading your blog. Your writing style is happy and creative!

I eat dinner around 6pm cuz I hate eating a late dinner as it seems to put weight on me. Even though I am mostly raw *sigh* weight gain on the raw diet, it can happen – boo

Have you tried the Pure bars yet? They are pretty yummy.

  27. samantha

i went to WF on sunday and they had NO SQUASH! in the whole store. it needs to make a reappearance in my life.

i usually get home from work/the gym around 8/8:30, so dinner is usually around 9…late, but it works.

  28. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga)

totally with you on the think thins…blech!
brock with cranz. love it girl!

  29. julie

so poetic of you i love it. actually i feel the same way, i was driving down my block in the middle slash beginning of the big snow storm and it was beautious and i couldn’t help but be okay with snow for like 30 seconds just because it looked amaze. way to see the bright side!

ugh i watched the halfpipe rerun like 12 THOUSAND times today. its so off the hizzy awesome and i can’t help but beam with a huge honkin smile everytime i see it!

  30. elise

yup. true story. c’est la vie i guess.
to answer your question i never had to take a specific class or write a paper on interprofessional collaboration, but i cant even TELL you how many times in nursing school that phrase was emphasized. omg. i was like I GET IT we work with other experts to give the patient the best care, yadda yadda.

  31. elise

haha. EXACTLY. the knicks arent so amazing, but whatever, MSG is still pretty cool, regardless of the event. they are massively pathetic in the vegan food options though. seriously, this is new york city, get with the times. no veggie burger. not even nuts. my options were popcorn (coated in butter) or a stale a$$ thawed (soft?) pretzel. since i used to work in concessions way back in the day at college, i know all too well what goes on behind the scenes. you couldnt pay me $100000 to eat any of that food.

  32. elise

yeah, it was more like a dessert pudding with a thicker consistency. hardly very hummus-y at all, but whatever, ill take a gimmick-y product every now and then if it involves hummus!

  33. elise

the name is pretty stoop…but then, i still bought it, so i guess their marketing isnt a total bust. meh. i only have one left, thank god.

early dinners are great for post-meal snackage 🙂

  34. elise

haha. lucky for you, it doesnt seem so creepy since i do the exact same things when reading others’ blogs. my goal is to get as many bright colored veggies into my salads, not only do they photograph well, but they taste ahhhh-mazing. its hard to say if the gnu bars are worth a 12 pack because several people LOVE them, but personally i wouldnt. i think you have a sweet tooth, and although i only tried the oatmeal raisin flavor, it was a bit lacking in the sweetness. basically, i like many other bars better. the only ones i buy in bulk are z bars (when im home at my parents’ costco). i just like variety to be an option and dont want to have to feel like i have to have the same bars over and over because i have a box of them to get through…hope that helps!!

  35. elise

yeah…i think that when you are up that late you have a free pass on meal times. those were the days…

  36. elise

ok, i officially have to try that flavor. it reminds me of my favorite bagel flavor from a small local place in my home town (back in ca) that i used to adore as a youngin’ (i dont even know if the place is still open). it had visible orange flecks in it and big honkin cranz. mmmm, it was delish!

  37. elise

hmmm…I think I want to visit Brazil. Baked sweet taters and black beans, late dinners, all sounds good to me! you are from Rio right? my cousins hubby is from Rio…most of his fam is still there. also Kyle has been to sao paolo, rio, and curitiba. i still have yet to go though 🙁 one of these days…

  38. elise

yeah, they are only available online, but if you read a few comments below the owner gives a good discount for ordering a bunch at once. there wasnt a single flavor i didnt enjoy and they do freeze well.

  39. ellie

:O That hummus is still fresh/good/safe? That’s lasted aaaages- all the hummus I find here needs eaten within a week or so. Not a problem, I might add 😛

I want to see the Olympics. My friend from high school is competing 🙁

  40. elise

PB, choc brownie and orange cran have my name ALLLL ovah them. thanks for the tip 🙂

  41. elise

i froze them when i first got them. they lasted no prob and still tasted great!

  42. elise

i know! thats the problem, if i wait, my stomach is audibly enraged, hahaha.

  43. elise

wtf!? what time do you go to bed? how do you not eat after 7!!?? crazy talk. not possible in my world.

  44. elise

yeah…its kinda a gimmicky product. im not sure it really counts as hummus, but im ok with chickpea products in any form. it tasted like maple syrup but in a thick & spreadable state.

  45. elise

thanks chuck!! they DO freeze well, i enjoy hummus at all times of the day 🙂

  46. elise

i know, im a freak. i hate nuts, but i know they are so good for you, so i try to disguise them in my foods as best as i can. i like peanuts and almonds as nut butters because they are churned up and dont resemble their OG form. but most other nuts are hard to get past. bars are the only way (as opposed to actual dishes/real recipes), so im trying to spread my wings…i think delicatas may be going out of season 🙁 figures.

  47. elise

i agree. i would be up all night if i tried to sleep on an empty stomach. good call on the yog mess!

  48. elise

thx tara, i thought so too!

  49. ellie

good to know- I wonder if reg hummus freezes? Not that I ever have it around long enough to freeze 😛

  50. Tori

I hate eating late at night. It keeps me up longer for some reason. I guess you could say I need to digest before I rest 🙂

  51. elise

hey judy! thanks for the sweet comment. so glad you found me – and great to “meet” another californian blogger who i can live vicariously through…ive heard of pure bars but i have yet to give them a shot. i can only imagine how being raw could potentially lead to weight gain as most of the foods are nut based. congrats on your positive journey with raw foods & RA – you deserve a medal for your ability to stay upbeat.

  52. elise

it figures squash season would be ending JUST as i discovered the best one of all…

  53. elise

homie is crazy good. flying tomato indeed.

  54. elise

yeah, i have never been presented with that problem either – haha. no hummus lasts longer than 2 days in my fridge. and thats being generous…

  55. elise

nothing worse than rolling to bed.

  56. BroccoliHut

Mmmm that squash and millet combo looks delish!
My sister works the 11P to 7A shift, and she still calls it “lunch” even though it’s at 3 AM!

  57. schacalieu

Dessert hummus!?!?! You have just rocked my world!

  58. ksgoodeats

Screw the Gnu and ThinkThin, I spy my flavor of the week up there – Honey Graham Z-bar. That’s all you need in life. Bread and hummus that is like pancakes? Sign me up. I’ve renewed my love for hummus – I don’t know why I strayed from old reliable.

I eat at weird times too – 4:00 is dinner on Tuesdays/Thursdays. Lunch can be anywhere between 11 and 1 depending on the day.

  59. chuck

I never wanted my dessert hummus to sound like a gimick. I never sat down and told my self I want to create a food product to put into stores. This was a total accident! I am a chef and my young daughter was working for me doing dishes and prep. I forced her to try some reg. hummus one day. She spit it in the trash and said yuk, add some peanut butter to it and maybe I’ll like it. So as a joke a went to my machine and tossed things in to make a peanut butter hummus. I figured it would be nasty. Everyone went nuts over it! After months of people telling me I should market the stuff I went for it. Came up with more flavors and started a business. The crazy camel is just for fun. The product is crazy and I like camels. The product really is a hummus as it is mostly all chick pea. Yes they are all natural. I had the nutrition facts and shelf life testing done at cornell U. I was very happy when they came back with the same cal. per 2 tbls serving as reg. hummus. I have half the fat and same nutrition. Yes they do have evap. cane juice to sweeten. However not much really. So we are a very small co. that makes this from scratch in our own fully lic. facility. We are not a huge food manu. at all. In fact this is the only product we make. in small batches, by hand. Even labeling is done by hand. I really want to thank anyone that has tried it and had positive feed back. I myself am amazed at how fast the product is growing! If you want to see it in a store near you then please ask for it at your favorite store. Tell them you want it and please pass on my # 603-841-5787 and web. desserthummus.com I have never taken a loan for this business. I hope not only to provide a totaly new healthy cool product. I also hope to show a small business can still make it big, even in these hard times. ps yes you can freeze reg. hummus. it will look a little broken when thawed. That is because it has a good deal of fat in it. (healthy fat however) you just need to stir it up to bring it back togeather. chuck

  60. elise

thanks for that history chuck…how cute that your daughter was the inspiration behind it all. i never meant to describe it as gimmicky in a bad way. i certainly enjoyed the product and i buy things that are somewhat corny or cheesy in the marketing all the time….that’s why marketers are such geniuses!! anyways, i will pas on the info to my readers. i had no issues with freezing your products. they thawed easily and actually taste good hot, warm, or chilled.

i think your nutritional info is great, and the fact that it tastes like a dessert and is still low fat is perfect for any audience, health enthusiasts or not!

  61. ethel

    a) a mi me gusta Robert Frost poems like the one you shared.

    b) if I go to happy hour, sometimes I don’t pair it with substantial amounts of food, so dinner is a hit or miss

    c) Snacking is the best thing eva! So kudos on the snackage…great minds think alike. =)
