Random odds and ends

I just found this draft from November!  Oh my gosh I feel like the worst blogger in the world.  Who does that???  HA.  Ok, well here’s something I almost shared with you months ago…enjoy!!  😉

img_0469Is it just me or did tofurky change their recipe?  I like it better now…it’s more like Field Roast (which has always been stellar, but is kinda $$$).

I make composed meals on most nights, but sometimes sh!t hits the fans and I am too tired to go ahead with the planned meal.  On those nights, I turn to “the formula” – green, grain, protein.  And in the following two meals, that “protein” category was filled with vegan sausages.

The above is not a photo I’d ordinarily share but it was surprisingly good thanks to the tofurky being better than I remembered it being.  I roasted the sausage, potatoes, and green beans all together on a sheet pan at 400 for the fastest meal of all time.  Sometimes you have to just get it done.

Here’s the smoked apple sage Field Roast waiting to be called up to the plate.

I sautéed it with kale and served it over leftover corn and rice.

I don’t even remember what this was!  I do love me some delicata.  Although it’s not in my top tier of squash rankings – too many other amazing ones to take those spots.

Favorite thing to get on my doorstep 🙂  This package had a bunch of different kinds of flour – including rye flour – which I’m excited to try out for a cracker recipe from this cookbook.

Hi! I recently came across your blog when I was trying to find some allergen information for something. My son is also 4 and is allergic to peanuts, sesame and then he recently had a hazelnut relapse…we thought he had outgrown it, had a food challenge and ate them just fine since then. And then bam…anaphylactic reaction.

Do you use Arrowhead Mills products for P? I once called them an a very rude lady told me that all their products may contain peanuts and then hung up. I was also wondering where you find nuts that don’t have traces of peanuts? Well, now that hazelnuts are out again, I’m basically screwed anyway. Since other than Bob’s Red Mill I don’t know where I would find things like Almond flour, flaxmeal, spelt flour etc…A peanut allergy seems pretty manageable but when you add sesame and tree nuts you might as well go bury yourself somewhere.

Oh yeah, and my baby is allergic to eggs. Talk about depressing.

Oh Stephanie! I feel your pain! P started with just as many peanut, tree nut (cashew and almond, not walnut), sesame, soy, wheat, and dairy. So everything but egg basically. It is SO HARD to find things without cross contamination risk. I called and emailed dozens of places. How scary that the Arrowhead Mills person talked to you that way. I would be so upset! I think I got a similarly vague response about their corn puffs once, but I’d have to go back and check. All my allergy posts are tagged on the blog so if you search those (hungryhungryhippie.com/tag/allergy) you should come across everything I’ve ever found pertaining to his allergies. I have shared all my correspondence and recipes and whatever else along the way. I’ve heard America’s Choice almonds are safe for those with peanut allergies, but double check first. I think you can get them on amazon but they are $$$. Sometimes you don’t have a choice though. I made my own hemp milk for P (since everything else was out) when he was a baby but now he has “outgrown” everything but peanuts and dairy. Who knew you could re-react!?! That’s very scary and I can’t imagine how helpless you must feel. The other company I have found to be best with cross contamination is Nutiva. Refer to the archives for their info. Hope that helps!
