US Open day 1

Alarm-less wake up at 7 am?  BOO.  Not sure why, but I was giving the crows a run for their money this morning.  While I got my java on, I rocked out to The Upwelling – and for the record – I am NOT a morning person.  Making sense of anything before 8 am is a struggle, let alone breaking in my vocal cords.

IMG_3696IMG_4152

I showered, lathered on sunscreen, and navigated my way to the 7 train.  I noshed on this MASSIVE granola bar from WF on the way.  I love these fruit & nut bars!!  They are so freaking huge and the crazy ingredients fill me up for HOURS.

IMG_4153

  • Rolled Oats
  • Honey
  • Brown Rice Syrup
  • Canola Oil
  • Sesame Seeds
  • Sunflower Seeds
  • Pumpkin Seeds
  • Cashews
  • Almonds
  • Coconut
  • Wheat Germ
  • Brown Sugar
  • Raisins
  • Dried Cherries
  • Dried Cranberries
  • Apricot
  • Vanilla

YUM!!!  It filled me up perfectly, in a non-brick-in-the-tummy way, though.  Perfect for a long day of tennis watching.

Get ready for a WHOLE LOTTA tennis photos (feel free to scroll away if you don’t give a rats a$$ about sports).

We arrived at the Billie Jean Whatever Stadium before the gates even opened.

Stoneyfield was giving away free Oikos samples.  Happy hippie 🙂

Spare time = pre-game photo sessions.  How flushing are those meadows.

IMG_4171IMG_4173

First match: Kim Clijsters def. Viktoriya Ksdfkjilzfdv  (I love a good come back story)

IMG_4183

Our seats for the Federer match weren’t as good :(   Good thing I have mega-zoom on my camera!

IMG_4191IMG_4179

Roger Federer def. Devin Britton (I heart Roger, but his rando American opponent held his own fairly well)

LUNCH TIME!

IMG_4177

Pathetic vegan options.  I went with the “grilled” veggie wrap and a $6 side of fruit.  Blah.  First of all, I guarantee those veggies never met a grill in their life.  Secondly, the employees were the definition of delinquent.  Upon questioning, they promised there was no cheese in the veggie wrap…well clearly the training to work at the concessions stands was not very extensive, since I took one bite and found my mouth filled with MOZARELLA.  Laura and I both got the same thing (she’s not vegetarian, but like me, she is lacto-intolerant), so we each wasted 30 minutes in line, followed by 5 minutes after, picking cheese out of our food.  Sweet.  After savoring each and every bite choking the gooey tortilla down, we headed back to the stadium for more matches.

IMG_4178

**Side note: while eating lunch in the grounds area, we had a TOTAL Seinfeld moment.  A camera came up and started filming us, and for a good minute+ we were on camera stuffing our faces.  I waved a few times, but then continued to get my grub on.  I’m sure it made for very entertaining footage.

IMG_4204IMG_4208

Post lunch we watched Serena Williams Amazon Woman def. Alexa Glatch

IMG_4192

Then we left our nose-bleed seats in the Arthur Ashe Stadium and went to the Louis Armstrong Stadium, where we were practically court-side.  No zoom required.

IMG_4216IMG_4215

Amelie Mauresmo (aka Muscles McGee) def. Tatjana Malek

IMG_4217

We stayed at the same court awaiting James Blake’s match.

IMG_4223IMG_4227

By far, the most exciting match of the day was when James Blake def. Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo.  The rallies, the serves, the challenges, man oh man!  So good.

It was at this point that I began to notice I may have been a little rushed in my sunscreen application…

IMG_4229

This was at the match, and since then it has gotten 10 times worse, and currently it looks like I’m wearing red knee-high socks.  Sunscreen fail.  Darn it!  I was so careful to get everything covered, I was even patting myself on the back for being clever enough to remember the top of my thighs.  How the HECK did I stop so abruptly below my knees?

I look like a total tool.  But at least I’m not wearing this:

Or these:

There’s a good chance I’m going to hell…it’s bad enough that I take pictures of these things, but then I go and blog about the random photos.  So uh, yep, it’s stuff like this that pretty much seals my fate of eternal damnation.

Anyways, after the Blake match I headed back home…

IMG_4230

With a mouth full of Peanut Butter Cookie Larabar.  This MAY be as good as the PB&J flavor in my book.  It held me over perfectly on the looooong commute back to Manhattan.  I made it home in one piece, and immediately got dinner ready.

GardenBurger’s Black Bean Chipotle veggie burgers x2

Cut and crumbled on top of this salad of kale, broccoli slaw, raw corn, and red bell peppers.

Did you honestly think I wouldn’t add hummus?

OK, I actually love watching tennis. And the people who watch tennis. There are some dimey men there. I love the attire, too! It’s (normally) clean and crisp. That woman you pictured, however, may need to get her look together. But she’s owning it, so I can’t hate on that. Thank you for taking pics and posting–I’ll see you in hell; it’ll be fun!

Gah food prices at those events! When I went to whatever match it is they have in Cinci, I was lucky enough to find hummus, falafel and pita! Love.

  4. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga)

What a sunburn….yikes, put some coconut oil or aloe on that badboy. Ouch mama!

The larabar flava tip is appreciated. I think I would dig that one.

Getting such great shots at a great sporting event….wow, priceless.

Even more priceless, that yummy brekkie bar from WF. Mmmm.

  5. Shelby

Haha, I love taking pictures of random people! I have a whole collection….I’m so evil 😉

  6. Lara (Thinspired)

SO COOL that you are there! Your poor legs—aloe vera?!
Too bad about the wraps. $6 is crazy for that fruit salad! I guess you gotta do what you gotta do, right?!

  7. blueeyedheart

Hahaha your legs look like mine did when I got back from Barbados!! Love random sunburn patterns… and those are inevitably the ones that take longest to fade!!

Granola bar, granola brick…same thing and equally as delicious.

    That’s one big ball….

Don’t worry, boo! You’re not going to hell, you’re just blogging things that we’d all think anyway! For example, Sunday, I was in a nice part of metro Detroit and spotted this woman crossing the street wearing silver wedges with leopard print socks plus a full length denim skirt with sequins down the ass crack…I wish I could make something like that up.

  9. Ada

OMG OMG OMG you saw James Blake??? I’ve seriously had a crush on him since I was nine years old:) I’m glad you had a fun time at the Open, I’m going there Sunday night. I hope I get to see as good matches as you did!

  10. insideiamdancing

So cool! I love watching tennis 😀 and gymnastics…

I was thinking about you when I ate breakfast this morning, wondering how you manage to get through work with your usual fruity breakfasts! The granola bar looks great- does WF EVER fail to pull through?

$6 for fruit? Gotta love stadiums. Gah.

I think I’m going to hell with you because I burst out laughing at that t-shirt…

Go get some aloe for your legs!

  11. Courtney

Look at you eating a bar with so many nuts/seeds in it! Whoo-hoo!

And how cool is it that you actually got to go to the US Open?! I love watching tennis! Nope, no hell for you–you know everyone else was thinking the same thing!

    Courtney

  12. julie

hahah I think I have those same exact socks I used for volleyball. we were all about the colored high socks..

glad you had such a good time at the Open 🙂 It was a beauuutiful day out so you got so lucky with the weather and everything!

  13. lilveggiepatch

Awesome day! The games look so fun. I’ve picked up and put down that granola bar too many times to count… next time it’s going to stay in my cart!

  14. lowandbhold

Haha, at least your sin-wagon provided me with some much needed entertainment! I’m not a big tennis watcher but would definitely go to the US Open if I had the chance. Looks like a blast!

  15. Angharad (Eating for England)

Love watching tennis! So much fun – what an awesome day! You are not going to hell my dear – I find that kind of stuff HILARIOUS and if you post it I will laugh at it.

Ugh. Major fail on the ‘vegan’ wrap. Hate that 🙁

At least you got to munch some Lara deliciousness!

  16. ethel

E!!! I was scrolling down and was going to comment on how tanned you were looking in that photo and then I get to the red lobster leg you were sportin’ and I started shaking my head. Tsk tsk oh rubia one. Love the match photos. Heart Federer and I was totally rooting for Mauresmo when she was playing that Russian chick last weekend.

p.s. I recently made the poor decision in thinking that I was immune to having a lactose intollerance flare-up when I had bagel and wee bit of cream cheese, result = a not so friendly ethel cramping up MAY-JAH! No bueno.

  17. janetha

goodness! so much to love in this post. first off i love mini things so i am totally digging that spoon. and second i also love oversized things so that ball is fabulous! nice sunburn lines, even nicer michael jackson T, i was cracking up. sorry about the lame food.. apparently it takes a college degree to take an order right these days? looks like the open was fun to watch none the less!!

  18. Graze With Me

Haha, yeah you might be going to hell for those pictures but I’m going with you bc I am laughing my ass off. I probably go to all sporting events just to people watch….well 5% for the sport but the other 95%? I just point and laugh….

I actually was about to say “where’s the hummus on that salad” until I scrolled down….yup, we all have our traditions. 🙂

  19. Missy Maintains

So fun! You were right near my apartment 🙂 And at my running spot! Sucks about that sunburn. You are too funny with the Michael Jackson shirt. I laugh every time I see that too!

  20. Allison

UGH – sorry about that “veggie wrap” 🙁

  21. Diana (Soap & Chocolate)

How cool that you got to go to the US Open! I am living vicariously through your pics. Oikos samples = success even if sunscreen = fail.
