RFD finally gets it right

I want to love Real Food Daily.  I really do.  But there’s something about it that annoys me (and perpetually disappoints me).  Maybe it’s how overpriced it is.  Or how every meal needs something extra added to it (for an additional $3 fee).  Or how the ambiance is often holier-than-thou.  Grrr. But it’s like Vegas.  I have amnesia and after a few months hiatus I go crawling back…only to remember why I vowed I’d never return.  Well.  I’m happy to say, RFD finally got it right.   With Mexi-fare.  My date was my FPIC, Ethel…. RFD hits and misses

It took me 3 hours to decide on what to order from Real Food Daily. It’s hard!  There are raw dishes that bring me to an infant-like drool state, as well as comfort meals that make me feel all warm and cozy inside.  Gah!  What to choose?? In the end I went with the BBQ tofu chop salad, with “seasonal vegetables, barbeque tofu, shredded cashew cheese, romaine, and ranch dressing”, which I bulked up with some pricey extras, including blackened tempeh and avocado. To be honest, the salad wasn’t overly thrilling.  I wasn’t expecting the… Read more >

The weekender

That’s the name of the meal I ordered at brunch on Saturday.  Kyle’s parents took us to Real Food Daily, my favorite breakfast spot in Santa Monica.  I love this place so much I’ve stopped linking to it on my restaurants tab because I’ve been at least a dozen times.     My plate’s the one on the upper left. It has two (gluten free) pancakes, scrambled tofu (with onions, tomatoes, & cashew cheese), tempeh bacon, and hash browns.  Holy breakfast right? You can choose between fruit or hash browns (can’t say no to fried taters!)… Read more >

The weekly menu

Since a lot of people have been interested in our budget friendly meal planning, here’s what we had this past week.  [Spoiler alert: they’re all really inexpensive dinners] Monday Egg noodles with teriyaki tofu, broccoli, & cashews The organic broccoli was leftover from one of last week’s dinners.  The roasted salted cashews are a pantry staple.  The egg noodles were on sale at WF (we used half of the 1 lb bag/$1.69).  The organic tofu was from WF (I baked the whole block/$1.69). As usual, the ‘fu was pressed for 2-3 hours, then baked for… Read more >

Catching up on last weekend

After a week of saving money on home-cooked meals a la plan, I opted to splurge for the weekend.  Lazy me.    I was working though, so it was my treat.  I snacked on chex and chocolate crunchfuls.  The crunchfuls are made with pea protein.  I got them in a sample pack a long time ago.  I reviewed the plain ones here.  The chocolate ones are better but still have a definite pea flavor going on.  I could get used to it (and didn’t really mind it that much), but if you’re looking for a… Read more >
