Extra food & extra coworker time

The word “leftovers” implies the portion in question was at some point unwanted.

When you feast on farm fresh fare, this is most definitely not the case.  But (shocking as it may seem) there was food left over from dinner.

Swiss chard, grilled avocado, grilled bell peppers, and grape tomatoes (all from the farmer’s market), red quinoa, and vegan sausages

For those who asked (all two of you), both Kyle and I looooved them.  I am typically skeptical of faux meat products, but Field Roast Grain Meat Co. has really legit ingredients.  We were both blown away at how flavorful the sausages were.  I am 100% serious when I say they will be grilled in many future BBQs.

This was one of the best work lunches I’ve ever made.

For breakfast I had oats with granola, chia seeds, and extra raisins.

IMG_0321

Kinda one of my bigger oat creations.  And it only got bigger after soaking overnight.

IMG_0323

What else?  Waffles!!  I figured I could make it one day without a scones (for the record, it was difficult).

IMG_0325

I brought Justin’s chocolate hazelnut butter to accompany the waffles.  I am having SUCH a hard time keeping mum about these waffles.  Don’t worry, Surprisingly Vegan is still forging ahead.

I actually had two apples, even though only one made the photo cut.

IMG_0324

I used Mary’s Gone crackers and sea salt sticks & twigs to finish off the last of a tub of Fresh ‘n Nova red pepper hummus.

And for dessert, dark chocolate edamame.

The team, assembled before I headed to bed the night before.

Ok, that’s a lie.  For some reason, I decided to join some coworkers at a karaoke bar that night.  Yes, the night before working.  I never hardly ever go out if I’m working the next morning.  And if I do go out, I definitely don’t drink.  But this time was an exception.

I was so torn because I rarely (ok, never) hang out with my fellow nurses outside of the hospital, and some of them are really fun and cool.  I didn’t want to turn down the offer for fear another would never come along!  Plus, I’m still the newest one on the unit…and since they’ve all been friends forever and ever I feel it’s important for me to go the extra mile in the social scene.

Good news?  It was fun.  Bad news?  The next day at work wasn’t so great.

In the end…totally worth it.

Do you hang out with coworkers outside of work?

I’ve been dealing with that same issue since I just moved to Dallas. I work weekends, but I’m trying to make new friends. Do I go out with them even when I have to be up for work the next day and raring to go at a new job? It’s a tricky decision!

  2. JL goes Vegan

First, wow, the colors of your farm fresh goodies simply leap off the computer screen! So lovely!

I tend to have boundaries at work, after too many years, when I was much younger, of not mixing work and life well. I do make a few personal friendships at work but even then we try to keep that quiet so no one feels left out.

  3. Kailey (SnackFace)

Eliseeee those waffles are killin me. I want them so badly.

Hanging out with work peeps after work is challenging. There are a select few I adore and trust and are the funniest people I’ve ever met, and there are a few who will use what you say or do at happy hour against you in the professional environment. It’s a hard line to draw. I tend to go out with my co-workers once a month or once every other month. Some of them have become genuine friends, though!

  4. Brigid of Vegging out in T-Town

I hang out with coworkers outside of work occasionally, but it’s just not as common in my department as I see in other places. I’m also about 10 years younger than everyone else, so that causes a divide. I am babysitting for a coworker tonight, though.

I had farmers market cherry tomatoes and green beans last night. Man, there is nothing more delicious than summer-fresh, locally grown tomatoes!

Chocolate edame sound amazing! I bet the combination is really good. I don’t really socialise with coworkers because there’s only 7 of us in total, one is underage and 4 of us work 6 days a week so we’re knackered!! Wish we did though, I think we’d gel better during working hours. x

  6. blossjoss

I’m starting a new job soon. And theres a chance I might not have co-workers. Yikes! *crosses fingers for gov funding*

I’m not sure what to think of your chocolate edamame…I’m curious. I’m also curious about the vegan sausages. Hmm. Hummus sounds yum, as always. Hopefully well get some red peppers from the garden soon so I can make some red pepper hummus. Awesome backyard/farm fresh fare.

I went to a baseball game with one of the girls I work with last weekend. It was a lot of fun, but it was more of a double date *her hubs. my bf*, so she and I didn’t really talk much. Plus, there was another couple I didn’t really know, who she seemed to talk to most of the time. It was still fun though!

  8. Kaitlyn@TheTieDyeFiles

I love your farmer’s market creation!! It’s so colorful and gorgeous. It’s making me hungry. And dark chocolate edamame sounds amazing, as does hazelnut butter!

I don’t really hang out with my classmates outside of school. I tried, but none of them are the type of people I enjoy spending time with. I have other friends, my boyfriend, and my roommate to keep me busy! Though lunch at school can get lonely. Except when I walk down to the lake, then it’s peaceful!

  9. Caity @ Moi Contre La Vie

I agree with most of the comments above regarding social time with co-workers. As one of the younger people at my firm I think it’s important to make an effort to socialize and create a non-work persona that people can relate to, but there’s definitely a line not to cross (and since I work in finance, a primarily male dominated industry, it’s EXTRA important to make sure that I’m 100% professional and appropriate so that I’m taken seriously).

All bets are off when a couple of us girls who are friends meet for cocktails on a Friday night though! 🙂

  10. Yolie @ Practising Wellness

In my last job I worked on reception and as a yoga teacher at big gym and leisure centre, and I always hung out with my co-workers after work…it was so much fun!
There were heaps of us! I was so lucky to have close girlfriends in the other receptionists, yoga students who became friends, and fun guy-friends in the lifeguards and personal trainers.
That was what was most hard about moving to Reading and NZ to be with the Kiwi…leaving behind my job and friends. but still, well worth it and I wouldn’t change a thing. <3
Your evening sounds so fun!!! Karaoke = amazing. Karaoke + alcohol = off the charts, lol! 😉 And as always your food makes me jealous and inspires me simultaneously 🙂 xyx

  11. Yolie @ Practising Wellness

Yeah, me too…I totally feel you! It’s a tough call, which is right…I still don’t know! As much as possible I try to accept invitations when they come but sometimes it is just not realistic. In which case I explain why I can’t attend and hope and pray that they ask again, lol! 🙂 xyx

  12. Joyce @ Jranola Joyce

    those waffles… YUM! 🙂

  13. Lee

My co-workers just aren’t really the going out types, so I don’t go out with them. I did at my last job and I can definitely relate to the next day being difficult!

  14. lynn @ the actor's diet

i wanna hear all about your karaoking! see you soon 🙂

  15. Christine (The Raw Project)

Yum on the grilled avocado, I need to try that. And I’ve never tried Field Roast, need to pick some up on the next Whole Foods trip.

I sometimes hang out with co-workers, but am a little careful because some of the guys are huge drinker/partiers when they go out which is not me!

  16. Abby @ Abz 'n' Oats

Grilled avocado? Yum-I bet guacamole would be amazing if the avocado was grilled first and then mixed with all of the other ingredients for kind of a smokey flavor! 🙂

I don’t really hang out with my coworkers currently. Considering I was an intern, I didn’t feel like it would be very appropriate. My other job I only work on Saturdays and the owners are like 60 so they don’t really go out! lol.

  17. Mama Pea

I can’t frickin’ get away from my co-workers.

    😉

  18. Paige

Completely UNrelated with your post (except maybe you and your coworkers should uh…brush up on your lingo at your next happy hour by doing this) but none of my nursing friends work on cardiac floors, so you seemed the most appropriate person to pass this along to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5oq4ErAmW0&feature=youtu.be

  19. Anna @ Food Fitness and Frolicking

    Aren’t Justin’s Nut Butter’s ADDICTING? Yum.

  20. Prathiba

Wow, your farm fresh meal looks fantastic! Even the leftovers look lovely. And grilled avocado is an interesting concept. Does anything change flavor-wise?

Also, why do you haveta keep mum about the waffles? I’m missing something. :/

I don’t hang out with my co-workers. I like to keep work and life separate. I am in grad school though, so a lot of my friends come from classes. So, I’m not a total loner. 🙂

  21. BroccoliHut

I’m in a similar situation–I have lots of good friends in my fellow dietetic students, but since we’re all graduate students, it’s a lot harder to actually hang out, aside from classes and such.

  22. Emily

Can I just say that I ADORE reading about your packed lunches? I’m a student and it is so helpful. Thanks 🙂

  23. Alexis

That quinoa/chard/avocado mix looks AWESOME!! I’m for sure gonna have to use some of these lunch ideas when I start school again in the fall. Question: Where do you get those adorable packages of nut butter? So cute and portable!!

  24. Shirley

My coworkers have some sort of get together once a month. I try to attend at least every other month. I work L&D so unfortunately if you aren’t seen often you might as well disappear.

  25. Lauren

DO other high school students count as coworkers? Then….yes! 😀

  26. Sarah

    Hello there!

I rarely go out if I’m on an early shift the next day. I would have done the same as you because the relationships with people you work with can make or break a job. I tend to relinquish my natural hermit ways in a new job and be more social whilst I’m settling in and still getting to know people. x

  27. Elise (Post author)

    glad you like emily 🙂
