Here’s another roundup of what I’ve found interesting in the news lately.

Food for Thought – how the Mediterranean diet is good for your brain.  Previous studies have shown the positive cardiac effects of a diet centered around vegetables, fruits, fish, whole grains, nuts, olive oil and a moderate amount of alcohol, with limited consumption of red meat, sweets and refined grains.  But now there’s a study suggesting adhering to a Mediterranean-style diet is associated with a lower risk of stroke and cognitive disorders like Alzheimer’s disease, too.

In defense of meat – The NY Times is hosting a contest for carnivores to make a case for meat eating.  It has to be an ethical argument.  I’m so interested in reading these entries!

Food Porn Addiction – Might as well commit me now.  I have recipes starred and blogs bookmarked to the high heavens due to gorgeous food photos.

12 foods that are bad for the environment – Most seem obvious (GMO, meat, etc.) but I had no idea about how palm oil was sourced.

Ten least obese cities in the US – Congrats Colorado, you are representing with THREE spots in the top ten.

Fit vs. fat – Many factors contribute to how healthy a person is.  Obviously exercise is important, but what about people who are naturally thin?  Are their hearts strong?  Is their blood pressure low?  What about larger people who regularly exercise?  In other words, is it more important for cardiac health to lose weight or exercise?  I realize doing both is preferable, but it’s still interesting to read the study’s results.

That NY Times contest is a really cool idea. I think it’s really interesting to get other peoples perspectives on issues like that and I like challenging my own views so I can make stronger, more informed decisions.

Repping the hometown: Boulder! I’m living in DC now, which has a sad dichotomy of the white/affluent health nuts and the poor/minority obese populations.

This is kind of a fun video about an initiative in CA for healthier cities: http://www.theatlanticcities.com/housing/2012/03/video-2-minutes-healthy-city/1599/

And, to celebrate food like we celebrate earth, Food Day! http://www.foodday.org

Newly vegan, former pesci here… What do you think if the pro-Mediterranean diet folks touting fish?? I *heart* the Med lifestyle, but I go back and forth about fish intake. Thoughts?? 🙂

i think fish is fine in moderation (d/t high levels of mercury) and if you know the source and if its an eco friendly choice. i usually defer to this resource:

    i have their pocket guide.
on a personal note, while i dont consume fish regularly, i think its silly to be so all-or-none regarding diet. i hate that labels make people feels excluded when really we should embrace small steps. a carnivore going meatless one day a week is progress! we should celebrate the good and positive choices we make for our health and for the environment every day rather than look at the ways we werent “the best.” there will always be better choices to make…just do what you can.
