Night rider

Working the PM shift means (a) cycling to work, (b) sleeping at odd hours, and (c) craving dinner foods for breakfast and vice versa.

Potatoes are kinda an anytime food.  And based on their shape they have different names, which correspond with breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Pretty random, but interesting (to me at least).

Hash?  Breakfast.  Wedges?  Dinner.  Fries?  Lunch.  Cubes?  Dinner.  Shoetrings?  Lunch.  Which am I missing?

I don’t know what meal this was actually.

There was coffee involved, which also doesn’t help narrow it down much.  😉

Yummy.  I sprinkled nooch on top of everything afterwards.

Sleep has been sporadic as per usual.  I felt like a real zombie on Halloween.  So fitting.

The best thing about riding my bike to and from the hospital is that it makes me want to sleep the second I get home.  The freezing morning chills me to the bone, which keeps me wide awake for the commute, but once I’m home, the bee-line to the shower and bed is as direct as it gets.

Another fun thing about riding my bike is that I get to rock my new gear.  My parents got me some sweet stuff for my birthday.  I haven’t tried out the padded shorts yet (I don’t have a road bike), but I have been looking like a pro in my new shirt.  On top of that, I was recently contacted by BTB sunglasses to test out their shades.

BTB is a new brand of sunglasses that makes high quality shades at an affordable price (we’re talking under $50).

I’d never heard of them before, but I liked that they started their own charity to help fight against childhood obesity.  A percentage of every sale is donated to their Be The Ball Foundation; which works to help children stay active and participate in sports.

They are incredibly light weight, which is perfect for cycling.  Plus they make me look like a badass.

Random Qs:

Do you have gear that’s specific for a sport you do?  Do you find activities requiring special gear discourage you from participating?  As interested as I am in rock climbing, I could never see myself getting into it because it’s not overly accessible and there’s too much equipment that I need, but don’t have.  That said, I don’t have a road bike, but I am constantly lusting over them…and all the future century rides I will do.

Favorite way to eat potatoes?  Hash browns are pretty bomb.

I hate to say it, but sometimes sports that contain a lot of equipment do discourage me from participating, because it can get really expensive, so I usually resort back to good old running. I love cycling, but just like everything else..it ain’t cheap. 😉 My favorite way to eat potatoes is good old crispy french fries. Happy Friday!

One of the reasons I got into running was the simplicity of it. Throw a pair of shoes in your bag and you can run anytime, anywhere. But sometimes the accessories can be a fun way to spice things up. 🙂

French fries & homefries. Yum. Now I’m hungry!

  3. Emily

I’m definitely a hash brown/ homefry fan, but they must be extra crispy!

  4. Katherine

Yum, I love home fries with peppers and onions mixed in and loads of ketchup,
I don’t have them too often, but baked potatoes with greek yogurt, shredded cheddar and broccoli are pretty darn good, too.

I’ve had the same thoughts on climbing. I’ve been to an indoor climbing place in Nashville once and had a blast, but there is SO much equipment involved, I just don’t ever see myself getting that into it. Of course I did get a little carried away with my running equipment…first the Garmin…then the Vibrams…then the shin sleeves because I’m a retard and didn’t run in my Vibrams more! Haha…ugh! :-/ I’m finally getting my mileage back up, but every now and then I get pains in my shins…so now I’m thinking about getting some shin sleeves for added support! Yay, one more thing to add to my collection! 😉

I love making potato chips as a breakfast side. I used to always fry them until I smartened up one day and found that baking is actually just as good with the right combo of spices and cooking time! Mmm!

I’m up for 3 weeks of night shifts starting on Sunday…wish me luck!

I definitely think that sports with certain gear make me less likely to get into them. I’d love to do triathlons but that requires a lot of expensive gear. Right now, I’m all about running. What I love about running is that I started out with just a pair of tennis shoes, but as I became more involved I was able to learn how much I love it and so I started buying special gear. Other sports you have to buy it right off the bat, and then what if you don’t love it!?!?

I guess it depends on whether it’s the kind of sport that you can rent some stuff. Like, I like rowing, but I don’t want to buy my own shell, and I probably won’t have to if I belong to a rowing club. On the other hand, I love owning my own snowboard.
I’m a big fan of scalloped potatoes, but I don’t have them very often they aren’t very healthy.

That breakfast looks delicious! Hash browns are great, I also like baked potatoes a lot! Filled up with other good stuff.

Fav way to eat potatoes? Either really chunky wedges with sweet chilli sauce or a rosti. Viper goes rock climbing quite a bit… I’ve never been that interested (I do like to swing around on the ropes though, it’s the actual climbing part I don’t like!) but I have really sensitive skin, so the chalk makes my hands break out, doh 🙂 I have yoga mat, that’s about it for sporty gear.

You should try bouldering if you like climbing, you only need a pair of climbing slippers/shoes, I suppose you could just forego the chalk but I find it useful. I mountain bike and have all kinds of specific gear for that, totally worth it though.

No one said twice baked potatoes yet??! My fav is actually little red new potatoes that are boiled whole until just tender, then squashed a bit with the back of a spoon, put into oven in single layer with sprinkle of olive oil salt and pepper, and some rosemary until edges get crispy but insides are still soft…. Well crap, now ive got to find those little potatoes!
Gear i dont really do, bright colored sports bras are my thing 🙂

I will eat any kind of potatoes any time of the day!!

    extra crispy fasho

  15. Elise (Post author)

plus its not like you can go climb a mountain anywhere…i mean, there are only a few specific places to go (also expensive to rent).

i still dont get the vibrams thing but i do like my polar (when i remember to wear it).

good luck on the night shifts!!!!!!

so true. i thought that when i was getting stuff for my triathlon. i bought a swim suit because i was thinking it would be crazy to drop all that cash on a wetsuit when i may not even like it!

  17. Elise (Post author)

true. a snowboard is a good investment if you live near snow bc renting adds up (plus you dont get good boards).

  18. Elise (Post author)

yuck. i used to hate the chalky hands thing from my gymnastics days.

  19. Elise (Post author)

im assuming id need some lessons first…and maybe a friend to join me? [otherwise driving out to find boulders could be boring alone]

  20. Elise (Post author)

couldnt agree more. getting a new sports bra is like a birthday. i use it as motivation to keep me excited and inspired.

    Cool glasses! 😀
I would absolutely love a good mountain bike with decent suspension on it – my boyfriend and I are into cross country biking, and it makes it much easier to be brave with a bike that can absorb and handle the bumps/lumps/rocks/drops etc! 😛
I love rock climbing and actually do have all the equipment – well, just a harness and climbing shoes. 🙂 Ropes are PRICEY!
How long does it take you to bike to work? So cool that you do.
As for potatoes – I love them baked! xyx

Rock climbing isn’t so hard to get into. I started earlier this year and the only equipment I had to buy were shoes and a harness (~$140 at REI). Most climbing gyms have them for rent. Some gyms have specials or intro packages (my membership allows me to bring one friend for free each month). If you find a buddy to show you the ropes, you don’t need lessons (I never had any). Top rope climbing requires 2 people anyways, so you can climb with a friend while they give you pointers (or make a new one!). Climbing gyms have indoor bouldering, which only requires shoes (no harness) and can be done solo. Outdoor climbing does require more equipment, but I’ve yet to get into that. You could give it a try with the rental and invest in your own shoes/etc if you decide you like it. I must give you fair warning that it is fairly addicting once you get started! I love it because it’s a great strength-building workout, but it’s fun so you don’t feel like you’re exercising!
