Turn that frown upside down

You all give me such love.  I swear.  Each and every comment about my stressed out blog hiatus filled my heart.  Since I don’t wanna be Debbie Downer, rather than rehash all the reasons why the past few days of work sucked, I’ll just brush that dirt off my shoulder, and move the eff on.

On a positive note, there were a couple of pretty sweet things that happened this week that cheered me up and (nearly) snapped me right out of my funk.  The first was Tuesday’s dinner at Galanga, a small thai restaurant in the West Village.  For those of you who regularly read, you know I have monthly dinners with my girlies rotating neighborhoods.  The West Village, while not as confusing and foreign to me as the East Village, is still somewhat of a maze.  Why couldn’t they just keep the entire city going with numbered streets?  It’s so simple and wonderful.  As far as I’m concerned, once you hit Houston, all hell breaks loose.  However, since I was coming from work, it was far easier of a trek than coming from my apartment (on the UWS).

We started with a shared appetizer of Nid Spring Rolls (weird name right?) which were carrot, cabbage, taro and clear bean noodles wrapped in spring roll skin served with a plum sauce.

They were crispy on the outside, but not overly fried (meaning I didn’t feel like I was eating a vat of oil).  Nothing spectak, but this way I wasn’t eyeing the kitchen entrance for our entrees like a tiger on the prowl.  The plum sauce was quite nice.  My portion of the rolls went swimming in it.

On the left: Chicken Pad See-Iew (wide rice noodles with stir fried Chinese broccoli and sweet soy sauce).  On the right: Zen Noodle (mix of clear bean noodles, Napa cabbage, and ear mushrooms lightly stir fried with shitake mushroom soy sauce).

These dishes get zero points for plating, but my chicks polished their plates, so I guess that’s peanuts as far as complaints go…

I was in the mood for something spicayyy, so I asked the waitress which curry she recommended.  She said the Mom Green Curry so I said sock it to me I’ll take that one (with tofu), please.  For the record it had 2 spicy peppers next to it on the menu…YOWZA.  It was described as a wonderful blend of green curry paste with coconut milk, bamboo shoots, bell peppers and fresh basil

Ladies and gents, we have a winner.

Sure, I couldn’t feel my tongue or lips after I was halfway into it, but it was gooooood.  Well worth the damaged taste buds.

Please note our server’s name!!!

We chatted the night away, but eventually the reality that I had to get up at 5 the next morning for work forced us to part ways.

Being the clever lassie that I am, I doggy-bagged my (tiny) portion of leftovers, thinking I would thus dodge the aforementioned empty fridge sitch, and tuperware it to work.  Wrong!  The curry juices seeped through the bag and it the bottom fell out on my subway ride home.  ICK!  I got such dirty glares by my fellow subway commuters.  Sorry to be THAT girl, but I swear I would have cleaned up after myself if I had the means to do so!!

One thing I DID escape with…

Long term borrowing, right C-line?

The second amazing thang that de-funked me was after work on Wednesday.  I came home to TWO PACKAGES!!!

IMG_4712

What a beautiful sight!  I’m sure you can all recognize the POM treats on the right, but what’s that on the left!?!?

Let’s explore further…

A Polar F6 heart rate monitor (in pink, naturally…)!!!

I have been lusting after this for SO long, and (with some encouragement from my fiancé) I finally sucked it up and got it.  He made a good point when he said “Elise, with you, there is nothing food or running related that is a bad purchase.  You will always use it.”  I mean, seriously, the boy makes a good point.  And I was in a bum mood, so why not?

IMG_4719

So pretty I had to play with it right then and there.  Do your hunger pangs subside when other (more exciting) things present themselves?  It’s rare.  But I can think of a few select moments, and this was one.  As you can see by the time, I got home a little late when I usually do.

Since I’m posting this at midnight, Happy Friday!

This has nothing to do with anything, but why are you not showing up in my Google Reader!? (Luckily I’m a blog stalker, so I find your posts anyway. ;))

I got the same POM package! Cool heart rate monitor… it’s nice to do things for yourself sometimes.

  6. Kristen

  7. Courtney

Are you kidding me with that name?! I seriously hope that the poor server was working under a pseudonym because THAT name takes the cake…can you imagine going through school with a name like that?!

Congrats on your heart rate monitor! Is this the first one you have ever had? I don’t have one nearly as nice as you–although I drool over the Polar ones frequently :-)–but I DO love mine. When I first got it a few years ago, it did change the way I worked out. I am kinda obsessed with checking it…I love it!

AMEN to numbered street sitch! i am a self-proclaimed idiot when it comes to directions and even i think it’s nearly impossible to get lost in nyc with numbered streets. but throw me south of houston and i.am.screwed. i may as well be in a different country.

your meal obvi looks the best. pookie sexbomb sounds like she’s straight out of an austin powers movie.

SO JEALOUS of your polar f6. i too have been lusting over one for months, but i certainly don’t have the means to pay for it. i’m glad that you do and i can live vicariously through you!

  11. twizler2

Pookie Sexbomb? I dont know why but i picture Neil Patrick Harris playing that person in a movie. Then again, i say that about every character i see in a film so thats nothing special.

Either way, you made me want to make a curry like whoa… who loves spice? THIS GUY!

  12. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga)

Pookie Sexbomb, If Averie Harmony Sunshine (which I just LEGALLY) changed my name to (I blogged all about it) wasn’t available, Pookie Sexbomb was my total 2nd choice.

Love the Polar. Even though I have no idea what my heart rate has ever been nor do I care that much cuz I am lame. Sadly, I am reallllllly uninformed when it comes to HR stuff. I just slow down if I feel like I am going too fast. Real technical, huh.

Anyway sweetie I hope your weekend keeps on a steady emotional uptick for you 🙂

    hugs!!!!!!!

  14. The Foodie Diaries

Several things… I adore Pookie Sex Bomb. ADORE. Plum sauce makes life taste better. So does Pad-See-Ew. Bummer there was chicken in it.

If you love Thai, PLEASE PLEASE go to Joya in Brooklyn Heights. (I’m guessing if Hudson gets confusing for you, you don’t frequent da BK often.) However, it is THE BEST thai. Ever.

But agreed that all streets should be numbered…

    P.S. Ladies is pimps, too…

  15. elise

OMG JOYA is my FAAAAAAAAAAAVE restaurant. its kyle and my anniversary spot bc we love it so much. agreed. cheap and amazing food.

  16. Graze With Me

I used to know a girl who was actually named Pookie. She went by CJ….weird. I would too though!

That curry sounds amazing – I’ve just recently developed a love for all things curry but can’t find a good restaurant to go to get my fix!

  17. Diana (Soap & Chocolate)

POOKIE SEXBOMB. AMAZING. Given that it was a Thai restaurant, though, I hope you didn’t notice any stray ping pong balls or anything. I’d have to get ‘spicious if so…

Anyway, noticing the Joya comments above, I live in BH if you recall and my roomie was just raving about Joya too! So I’m just sayin’, if you and Kyle ever get a Joya craving, y’all are welcome to give me an excuse to try it out. 😉

  18. elise

yes! lets pick a date. i heart that place.

  19. lowandbhold

Oh I want that Polar so bad! Definite pick-me-up!

Hahaha, your servers name is classay! Love it.

  20. ksgoodeats

“I wasn’t eyeing the kitchen entrance for our entrees like a tiger on the prowl.” I’ve totes been there. Not fun! What’s worse is when another table gets their dishes before me. I throw a tantrum like I’m 3 years old. It’s not pretty!

HAHAHA – Pookie Sexbomb! I LOVE IT! A pink HRM! Fantastic purchase 🙂 You’ll have to see if your HR raises when you see Sabra. $10 it does!

  27. elise

haha…i hope its not her real name!!! im so into curry. sometimes its hard to know where a trusty place to get your fix is…there can be some serious consequences with spicy food done wrong, if you catch my drift…
