WWJD

What would Jillian do?  Not to sound lemming-like, but that’s kinda how my mind has been operating lately.  I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad thing either, since she’s pretty much on the pulse with healthy and hippie-esque trends.  Paraben free soap – check!  Formaldehyde free mouth wash – check!  You get the point…but hormone free hygiene products aren’t the only thing she draws attention to.

It would take an entire post to profess my serious amor for Jillian Michaels.  She’s amaze.  But don’t worry, I won’t.

Instead, I’ll just throw out some shameless plugs.  (I’ve actually never read her books) but ever since Sarah introduced me to her weekly podcasts, she’s definitely been rubbing off on me in way more aspects of my life than I thought possible.  More on that later…

FIRST.  Work lunch eats.

From L to R, top to bottom:

Apple Pie Larabar, Oatmeal Raisin Kashi Chewy bar (I know I bashed the ingreds before, but I had already purchased a bunch) – and as much as I hate to admit it, despite some of the crap in the bars, I DO like their taste and texture, they DO keep me satisfied for longer than most other bars, and they don’t upset my stomach (now really, how can you ignore such redeeming qualities as those?).

Apple, Tribe mini tub of hummus, mega ensalada, Pop chips (my last mini package), and dried mango.

Work was whatevs.  I had more patients than usual, but the day was ok (probably because I picked up TWO lucky pennies).  I think I’ve mentioned this before, but in terms of finding pennies on the ground, I’m RIDIC superstitious.  If they are heads up, I MUST pick them up…in addition to providing me with good luck, I think it’s bad luck if I pass them by.  Now tails up pennies are an entirely different matter.  I refuse to pick them up, and I think they are bad news bears.  Does anyone else have weird superstitions like this?  Anyways, back to work.  I found one lucky penny in the subway, and another on my lunch break.  Then one of my patients asked me to write my name out for her to acknowledge me in the post-discharge hospital survey.  Awww!  Whose ego doesn’t need stroking every once in a while, right?

On my way home from work I crunched into my apple, because I needed some fuel for my trip home Jillian said to.  The energizing combination of the apple and Jillian’s podcast led me to do something I rarely do…post-work exercise.  Typically 12 hours on my feet drains the sh!t outta me, so cardio is as inviting as death by the time I get home.  Not today!  I ran up and down Riverside Park, and just 20 minutes of heart pumping pavement pounding left me in a state of bliss that no drug could replicate.

Dinner was thrown together in a semi-haphazard manner, but I think it’s safe to say I got my greens in.  The berry flavored Amazing Grass isn’t as good as the chocolate, but who is surprised by that?  I used half water and half “milk” for this one and stirred it up with the straw.  It wasn’t sweet enough for my liking, so I added a Stevia packet, and then it was perf.

IMG_3329

If you don’t know what these veggies are, you have problems.  As for the “dressing,” I used more of my green goop from yesterday (aka avocado greek yogurt miso mash up) and a forkful of hummus.

IMG_3293 IMG_3299

On the side I had some carby goodness, including Newman’s Own Organic Pretzels, and “cheesy” bread.  Alvarado Street bread is like Jillian, it really brings out the best in its participants!  Even though the cheddar flavor of Vegan Rella isn’t the best, when melted on A street toast, it was de-lish.

Fortunately, I had the mozzarella flavor on hand for dessert.

Kyle got back from his training session fairly late, so I wasn’t in bed until after midnight, but at least insomnia hasn’t reared it’s ugly head back into my life.

I am not overly superstitious, but I refuse to read an old horoscope or walk under ladders.

I hear you on some funky ingredients in some bars, but the satiety/energy/taste factor come into play big time for me. Though loving Lara bars right now 😀

Ah, Riverside Park! My uncle is retired, but now works full-time as the head gardener there. If you ever see some crazy guy with a dog digging away, it’s probably him. He practically lives in the park!

  2. elise

what a cool job!! i’ll keep my eye out for him.

  3. Stacy

Thought I should de-lurk and say how amazingly tasty your avocado dressing looks. I will definitely be giving that a try soon!!

  4. elise

yeah for de-lurking!! i love “meeting” readers 🙂

  5. ksgoodeats

Weird superstitions?! Well….break out the hummus because you’re going to need a snack for this. Back in the training days I was CRAZY superstitious. Some included:
    – wearing specific undies for events
    – eating specific foods
    – sitting in a specific location next to specific people
    – taking the same route to the venue whether on foot or in a car
    – putting things on in specific orders
    – rooming with the same people
I could go on and on!

If you love Jillian so much why don’t you marry her?! 😉

Oh insomnia – last night I may or may not have taken a few Benadryls to fall asleep. Gahh!

  6. Abby

Glad to see the insomnia went away.
Maybe you were just so worried about finding an edible use for the cheddar Vegan Rella that you couldn’t sleep! Mission accomplished=quality shut eye.

Am I the only blogger in the universe who hasn’t hopped on the JM train? Gotta stay cool!

Good luck keeping the insomnia away… I haven’t been so lucky.

back in the old school college vball days I used to do the WEIRDEST things. I had this BRIGHT pink sports bra and I considered it my “lucky” bra so I had to wear it every game. Home games we had to wear our white jerseys. My mom would consistently call me the team whore because you could see my bright pink bra through my white jersey but there was no way in hell I was not wearing it.

    mmmm apples & hummus 🙂

I neeeeeed to get some JM podcasts! where do you get them from?!

  9. Sara

I’m new to your blog but I’m enjoying it very much!

I got so confused when I saw “What Would Jillian Do?” because while I don’t watch The Biggest Loser, I do watch The Bachelorette. So I read that and thought, “Well, who gives a crap what Jillian would do?”

    I’m on the same page now… I think. 🙂

  10. elise

haha, yeah i have no bachelorette knowledge. i dont watch that (or the biggest loser actually) but i heart jillian’s podcasts

  11. blueeyedheart

I saw that about heads- or tails-up pennies in a movie once… I think it was The Lizzie Mcguire Movie, actually. :p Ever since then I think of it every time I see a penny lying on the ground… but I’m not superstitious about it!

    <3 <3

  13. lowandbhold

  16. Quinn

Sister! I have been listening to the Jillian podcasts ALL day while working at my desk today, and I LOVE them. She is so inspiring and I love her straightforward approach. In fact, I almost went for some M&Ms this afternoon at a coworker’s desk and I heard her voice in my head. You’re right – total WWJD.

  17. Courtney

I am totally obsessed with Jillian’s podcast too, thanks to you! I have never read her books or even *seen* an episode of the Biggest Loser (I think I may be the only person in the world who has not seen it…), but her podcasts rock my world! I love it!

And I am super impressed that you could workout after being on your feet all day at work…you are a beast! I don’t think even Jillian could motivate me to to go workout after work if I had your job…

    Courtney

PS How do you melt your vegan cheese! ? Do you do it in the oven? Microwave? I very very rarely buy vegan cheeses, but when I do, I can never make them melt…what is your secret?!

    Courtney

  19. Jessica (jesslikesithot)

Hahahahah….I thought you were talking about Jillian from the BACH for a second.

Anyways, loving on the cheese/apple plate, the a-street bread, green goop and newman’s pretzels!!

PS-totally thought of you yesterday when I was DIPPING a-street bread into some hummus. The crust parts were dry and needed some lovin’!!! The bread tastes even BETTER in hummus than chips do! LOVE!

  20. Sarah (LovIN My Tummy)

She’s totally in my head too. But I like her, so she can stay!

  21. elise

i toast the bread first then micro the cheese on the toast (it only takes 15 seconds)

  22. jenngirl

Whoa whoa, post work exercise is definitely a foreign concept for me as well, kudos to you!!

    Eats are lookin’ scrumptuous 🙂

  23. suzannern

Genius! I was nervous you would say a toaster oven–I don’t have one of those and would have been so sad if that was how you melted it…
