3 shifts, 3 bars, 3 bottles

Wuddup sissy-poos?  What’s crack-a-lack-in in the blog ‘hood?

If the title confuses you, here are the latest trilogy of events in my life: I worked 3 days in a row, tried 3 new bars, and downed 3 bottles of Kombucha.

I’m pretty sure I left off with my pre-packed eats for Sunday’s workity-work, which almost satisfied me, but needed a little supplementation at lunch time.

Enter Grape Kombucha!!  Caroline, you were right, this one is divine!  It totally reminded me of popsicles on a hot summer day.  Too bad I was on my lunch break at work, and not running through the sprinklers or flinging myself head first down a slip ‘n slide.

Ah well, I still blissfully sipped away in sunny Union Square.  And if you look really closely you can see that I managed to capture that little kid mid-trip/fall on the right.

Anyhoo…after work I peaced the eff out and sprinted home to get my grub on.

My din din was pretty darn good, if I do say so myself.

IMG_3197

First I started with a randy little combo of spinach and spring mix.  Then I tossed a heaping amount of cooked and chilled quinoa, chickpeas, seitan cutlets and edamame in hummus.

IMG_3199

HOLY.YUM.

IMG_3198

This salad was heavenly.

I made another just like it for seconds because nothing else sounded as good – and I added an even bigger dollop blob of hummus on top of this one.

IMG_3200

Go make this now.  Do it.

 IMG_3186IMG_3202

I had a apple and cheese platter for dessert #1, and some Pure Green Tea.

Anyone ever tried this stuff?  It’s strong fyi!  I only had a few sips just to try it…the last thing I need is caffeine with my insomnia (and in case anyone cares, I took some melatonin last night and it seemed to help).

IMG_3206

Dessert #2 plums x 2.  These looked the same on the outside, and I def bought them from the same bin, but clearly they were different.  I only realized this as I cut into them, but no pasa nada – they were both juicy and tasty.

IMG_3204

Check out my cute new wanna be Sigg.  It’s a “Klean Kanteen,” and more importantly it’s pretty and pink 🙂

I couldn’t wait to bring my first non-toxic laced iced coffee to work on Monday.

Speaking of work…

IMG_3205

I packed an extraordinary amount of food because I’m sick of racing home with my stomach twisting in knots with hunger pangs.

Some newbies up in hurrr: chocolate chip Z bar and original flavor PoPchips

And the oldies but goodies: mega-salad with all the usual suspects (spinach, alfalfa sprouts, chickpeas, edamame, cherry tomatoes, cukes, and dried cranz – holla!), apricot Clif bar, dried papaya spears and cow hide, non-organic (gasp!) raisins, and a crunchy crispy gala manzana

I believe I owe y’all a few reviews, no?

j

1) Choco-walla Odwalla Bar from Saturday

Pros: Chocolate, chocolate, chocolate, do I even need to say more? There were even nuts in it, and I still loved it.  I couldn’t discern any big chunks of almonds (which was my main worry), so I liked the fact that I got the almond flavor, without being aware of the nuts’ presence.

Cons: It was a bit one-note, although, if you are craving something chocolate-y you are in for a treat…it wasn’t sickeningly sweet, but I’d definitely put it in the cookie/dessert category.

Would I buy it again?  In a word, yes.  But, it will probably be more of an indulgence (or healthier option when I’m PMSing craving something sinfully delish).

2) Chocolate chip organic Z bar from Monday

Pros: It was basically a chocolate cookie, with not too many kcals, so that’s a nice option to have when you want something that tastes like a dessert or when you want something really small just to hold you over until your next meal.

Cons: It was small, and didn’t hold me over very long (an hour max).

Would I buy it again: Hmmm…depends on the $.  I liked it, but I have other faves (ie choco-walla) that would be more nutritionally substantial options.

3) PoP chips – OG flavor

Pros: Healthy and light, and a WAY better option than regular chips.  They are also becoming more and more available…it feels like I’m seeing them everywhere, lately!

Cons: Unless I got these in small packs, I would have a hard time with self control.  Even though it’s unlike most of it’s fellow carbs in nutritional stats, it is still similar in it’s addictive nature (this could also be a pro too I guess…).  Once I had one, I wanted 8 million more.  Good thing I only had the mini-bag or it would have been lights out, game over for me.

Would I buy it again:  I DO want to try the other flavors, but I try to avoid buying snack food in large more-than-one-serving bags because of the above.  Maybe if Pop Chips sold assorted flavored mini-packs, I’d be on board (although I also don’t really agree with the environmental aspect of plastic overuse).  Then I could bring one a day in my lunches knowing I could only have a normal amount.

Moving forward with the days meals…

I got home and made myself a BEAST of a salad.  Are you impressed with my restaurant-worthy presentation?

IMG_3210

That’s some serious stack-age.

Layer 1: mixed spring lettuce & tomatoes

Layer 2: quinoa & chickpeas

Layer 3: seitan & edamame

Layer 4: matchstick carrots & dried cranberries

IMG_3211

I had to bust out some Berlin wall action to eat it though.  Puuuuurty…

IMG_3214

With a hummus filled tortilla on the side.

IMG_3213

It was perfect.

IMG_3221

I grabbed this a bit later, and then, on a completely random whim, headed out for a late night stroll…(Kyle’s in CA still, and I wasn’t ready to go to bed).  It wasn’t too late, so I headed to the store because there was a SALE I could not miss.

$1.99 Kombuchas + holiday paycheck =

IMG_3223

Hi, my name is Elise, and I’m a Kombucha-holic.

I bought EIGHT bottles.  They guy at the checkout gave me a bit of a bizarre look, and I explained that they are laced with crack, and I needed my late night fix.  He nodded in understanding placating bewilderment.  Sadly, being a nurse, I know that look all too well…

Once home, I decided to pop open a nice bottle of trilogy.

IMG_3217 IMG_3218

And what goes better with crack in a bottle, than crack in a wrap?

Vegan Rella mozz and hummus in a tortilla – eat your heart out!

It was an amazing late night snack and I devoured it practically whole.  While getting my PM grubbing on, I chilled on the couch watching episodes 1 through 5 of Nurse Jackie.  I’m obsessed with this show! Does anyone else watch it?  Some of the nurses I work with were involved in providing material for the show (they wanted New York nurses’ stories)…so I decided to tivo it and only just got around to watching.  Next thing I know, it’s 2 am, and I’m hooked.  Good thing I don’t have work tomorrow!

Love your reviews and foooood 🙂

    Haven’t seen that show yet!

  2. Maggie

I love that you made another salad 🙂

I don’t get SHO but I watched the first ep bc it was On Demand and I loved it!!

  3. insideiamdancing

your salads are incredible- I am dying to make seitan. My brother made it with regular flour and it came out pretty well so it’s on my list for once I move! I think I ate my own weight in hummus today- that tub for the week? Gone. It’s now filled with peach chunks and in my freezer.

Cool Kombucha sale! I saw the unflavoured one today and looked more closely- $2 per bottle and kind of high in sugar. Is your all-natural? I am going to pick some up to try/use as salad dressing/clean the bathroom with.

  4. ksgoodeats

Running through the sprinklers?! Ahhhhh childhood! Drop dead discounts is right! That’s a steal on the kom-who-has! I can NEVER spell those drinks right the first time!

I watched the first episode of Nurse Jackie but haven’t watched it since – I don’t know what I’m waiting for though because I liked it! That’s pretty sweet though that they used real stories!

LOVE the reviews – get your hands on the mocha-walla!!

  5. lowandbhold

You are serious about your Kombocha needs, no one can judge you for that!!

The vegan crack wrap looks delicious! Gotta love vegan cheese that melts!

Glad your sleep is getting a little better.

  6. julie

I’ve never heard of Nurse Jackie! It’s funny? If it is let me know 🙂

haha its like the fridge light is shining down on your crack collection. That kid in the background was probably falling over while he watched you snap a shot of your purple pills…i mean purple drink.

  7. Abby

I’m usually quick to quip with a sarcastic crack or something, but on a serious note, I just have to say that (even though it sounds dorky and single-white-female-ish) your blog really helps me.

I won’t detail (on my blog) but I sometimes struggle with the fact that I have to eat so damn much just to gain an ounce, and seeing your healthy attitude and love for the same foods I chow down on really keeps me going.

So, thanks. This cheesy portion of the blog is now over.

    Awesome salads. Need avocado 🙂

  8. elise

abby – your comment is very very kind. im so glad you enjoy reading. it is really hard to stay level headed in the diet/image obsessed world we live in. i have moments of insecurity just like everyone else, and i think its important to remember that being healthy is about enjoying and cherishing the things you love in life (especially if that happens to be nutritious food)!

plus, overdosing on avocado and hummus is a far better “problem” to have than frequenting the mcdonalds drive thru (at least in my completely irrelevant opinion).

i like your clever quips too 🙂

  9. blueeyedheart

Your salads look incredible. I wish I COULD go make one now, but sadly I am stuck at work. Sigh.

The PoPchips do come in smaller bags… not in multi-packs, though. Obviously you know they come in single-serving sizes, because you had one there. ;p

$1.99 Kombucha?! I found it quite hilarious that when I was in L.A. (where it’s made) that the GT’s Kombucha was way more expensive than up here. Freakin’ California and your high prices!

  11. Jessica (jesslikesithot)

Yo busyyy girl, glad you finally got a day off! But why aren’t you in CA with Kyle?!?!?! C’mon nowww, you know you wanna meet me, brookie boo (homegirl) and snackface!

That stocked fridge of kombucha looks like one out of a grocery store! Ha….i’ll start buying from you now instead, will ya give me a good deal?! 😉

And um, your salads are getting prettier and prettier each post….and that vegan crack wrap is lookin’ GOOD! Check out that oozin’ cheese! haha…. PS- LOVE the “Klean Kanteen” !!

  12. Heather Eats Almond Butter

Never heard of Nurse Jackie – I’ll look into that as I love any kind of medical/hospital show.

$1.99 for Kombucha?!? That is a steal. I would have stocked up too, and yes, grape is definitely the best flava.

    Mmm…hummus blobs. 🙂

  13. healthy ashley

    I need to try Kombucha!!!

And your lunch mixture just gave me inspiration for my dinner!

  14. Courtney

I am V impressed with your salad stack-age skills! Props to you 🙂

Holy cow, girl, that is a LOT of kombucha! But I am the same way–if there is a sale on something I like and eat/drink a lot, I *totally* stock up. I have gotten many a strange looks from weary checkout people wondering what heck I am gonna do with so much (insert Courtney’s weird food obsessions here)…

  15. Sarah

Kombucha and a crack wrap?! Holy hell, I’m on my way!!!!

  16. Quinn

I just passed Nurse Jackie On Demand and wanted to put it on because I’d heard such great things. Think I’m going to take the plunge!

Good review on the chocowalla – sounds like it might be a once a month kinda purchase.

I’ve got to try these Kambuchas – and at sale prices no wonder you were clearing out the store. You should have just said to the clerk, “Don’t judge me.”

  17. MarathonVal

You would be happy to know that I FINALLY tried Sabra hummus today!!! They had it at Costco. I of course love it and have eaten about 1/3 of the container already!

  18. snackface

Homegirl and I were recently standing at a convenience store staring at the rack of Clif bars. I asked, “who in the world would ever want or buy an apricot Clif bar?” Now I know.

Duuude Kombucha is SO addicting. I love it. Can’t afford it, but I can feel my body crave it.

Have a fab night. I hope you sleeeep!

  19. broccolihut

Yay! I am so glad you liked the grape as much as I did.
I cracked up when you pointed out the kid in mid-falling position. Is that bad? It doesn’t bode well for my future in motherhood.
Beautiful restaurant-esque salad. How did you manage such lovely presentation? A tuna can?
Kombucha IS laced with crack. You MUST update me on any new flavors you try. I just tried the strawberry serenity the other day, and it was pretty awesome. Crack-tastic, indeed.

  20. elise

Tuna can no, Tupperware yes. I just tried the guava today – sooooo good! I don’t think I’ll find one I don’t like, but I did take the plunge and buy the green one. It’s waiting in the fridge still, so we’ll see…

  21. elise

The random few Clif’s I have tried (Blueberry, Apricot, CranApple) are all the ones with the fewest nuts. I don’t like em. If I see the words “almond” or “walnut” in the title, I avoid it…as a food lover, I realize this is a tragic situation, so I’m working on it. But seriously, sometimes I gag at the idea of a fleck of walnut entering my salad…what’s it called when you have a fear of nuts? Nutaphobia? I certainly don’t have a fear of all legumes though…ahem, chickpeas?

  22. elise

The ingredients are 95% kombucha and then whatever flavoring is in it…so I just checked the sugar content and it doesn’t seem too ridic to me. I don’t know. It IS a fermented drink, so it’s probably all sugar alcohol? Good thing my extensive chemistry studies are coming in handy now…

  23. elise

drug abusing nurse, total hard ass, yes!

  24. homegirlcaneat

    Had to comment because

    OG flavor..

    ahahahhaahhahahaha!!

  25. Graze With Me

Your salads look incredible. All of them! I’m not much of a salad person but I may have to steal some of your ideas since they look so incredible…

I too have fallen under the spell of Kombucha…Trilogy might be my fav. Or Gingerade….yum.
