Carrot icicles and a big ‘ol brownie

Another day another packed lunch.

For breakfast I had oats with home-made almond granola on top (I just realized I never posted that recipe).  Oops!

I intended on eating the banana with the oats, but it was so good on it’s own I didn’t mess with it.

I ate this around 9 am – earlier than usual – but two of my three patients wanted to be left alone.  Provided they are medically stable, I try to accommodate their wishes as best I can.  I can relate to not being a morning person, and it seems a bit harsh that we wake people for blood draws at 4 am and then again for bedside report at 7 am.  Plus, I can only imagine how scary it is being in the hospital – so if I’m able to give someone a small amount of control, I imagine it’s a nice feeling.  When everything else is out of your hands and you’re surrounded by disease, it must be hard to handle.  Offering a sense of power over your schedule is the least I can do as a nurse to help you.  I’m talking about favors as simple as offering an extra hour of shut eye before dragging them on laps around the unit.  Or spacing out the potassium pills.  It’s the small things.  And they set a nice tone for the day too…I win over many a grouchy patient this way.

My fellow coworkers did a double take when I took my lunch out.  A Filipino dish for the vegan white girl?  Stereotypes be damned.

My pancit has tofu and seitan thankyouverymuch.

Usually I eat outside on my breaks, but I wasn’t scheduled to get relief until 4 pm, so I ate bites of it here and there between patient care.  Not ideal, but I certainly wasn’t about to wait til 4 to eat lunch!

My dessert came much later (during my actual break time).  I brought a piece of brownie so big I had to eat it with a fork.  It was basically cake.

I had carrots on the way home from work.  FYI, that’s ice on them in the photo.  Clearly I need to turn down the crisper temp.

The horse carrots I bought last week are weird tasting.  I have been peeling the skin off to eat them because I am so turned off by it.  Anyone ever had this problem before?

Once I got home I showered and plated leftovers for the quickest dinner ever.  I didn’t even need to heat them up so it was literally a fridge to mouth meal. 🙂

That lunch looks delicious! And I can’t even imagine being sick and in the hospital. I’ve been very lucky, the only time I’ve had an IV or even been in the hospital was when I had an upper endoscopy, and I was in and out in about 2 hours. Counting my blessings!

it’s amazing how little things like that win over patients 🙂 it really does make for a better shift for EVERYONE involved.

i agree with everyone else – is your friend willing to share the recipe for the pancit??

When I stayed at the hospital, I dreaded those 4 AM blood draws! Even worse were the 11 PM, 1 AM, and 3 AM blood pressure checks they always woke me up for! Haha, but I knew they were just doing their job, as long as they were nice about it 🙂 I have been loving granola recently, can you believe I actually had NEVER tried it before 2 weeks ago…I’m crazy, I just assumed I hated it. Also the carrots here in B.C. always taste weird because they are fresh from the farm, so I am fine peeling the skin because at least the dirt on the outside means they are fresh, right? At least that’s what I tell myself!

Occasionally I will get weird-tasting vegetables too. I bought cauliflower a couple months back (when they were still in season), and it tasted really fishy to me… Like, literally fishy, and I was so turned off by it that my stomach turns at the thought of eating it. It might be awhile before I eat it again. 🙁

And I’ve noticed it with broccoli too, just not as strongly. Oh, and even longer back I got some celery that tasted like B.O. It was terrible! How does that happen?? Lol.
