Keep Calm and Carry On

This is a mantra I rely on heavily at work…so you can imagine my excitement when I discovered they sold these historic posters (obviously I bought one).

You can read about the history here, but basically, I use it to keep me from freaking out when patient’s are about to code, or I’m racing frantically to get them to a stable state, pushing IVs and slapping defib pads on the patient…you know…day to day things.

I bought the large poster, and they sent along a mini-card too (above) which subsequently went in my wallet to remind me each and every day to KEEP CALM and CARRY ON.

Anyways, today I had work…nothing special to report.  Up and at ‘em at 5.  Starbucks at 6.  Saving lives by 7…I keed, I keed.

In case you were starting to think I am all intellectual and highbrow, here’s what I’m reading to put my super scholarly self back into perspective.

IMG_3789

Yeah, I’m deep.  But, in my own defense, my last few books have been a bit heavy, so I just wanted a no brainer, with which my mind can zone out on the subway…

(I’m only a few chapters into it, and I am struggling to keep reading it’s THAT insanely stupid)

Here are the days eats:

IMG_3790

Kale salad with brocc slaw, shredded carrots, and cherry tomatoes (the sabra hummus goes into this bad boy for a phenom mix).  Dried figgies, coconut cream pie Larabar, TJs “Go Rah” Trek Mix bar (left over from the weekend in AC – and no, I have no clue why it’s called “Go Rah”), and a home made trail mix assortment.

IMG_3791

In the 4 month old baggie: raw pistachios, raw almonds, goji berries, and raisins.

This was an interesting combo of bitelettes…I was digging the salty pistachios with the dried fruit…but the almonds didn’t see to fit.  Next time they may get sidelined – sorry boys.

As for my second attempt at massaging kale?  Well, I will consider it a success, but only because of the Sabra.  Sabra’s SO much better than Tribe.  I was indescribably happy last week when I found a store that carried them in the cute little lunch-box size.  You may recall that up until today, all my lunches contained Tribe’s mini-tubs…well, NO LONGER!  It’s safe to say that this changed my life.  I’m actually not exaggerating.   I mean – wow – talk about adding to a salad!  I think this counts as a healthy fat for Leng’s salad challenge.

**I just realized the reason Sabra is so much tastier.  Let’s take a look:

2 oz. Sabra = 150 kcals  VS.  2 oz. Tribe = 50 kcals

(Whoa, I’m just going to pretend I didn’t see that, ok?)

On the way home from work I made a WF pit-stop.  Yes, two days in a row.  I have a problem, deal with it.  Guess what I found!?!?!  (you’ll have to wait until tomorrow’s lunch to see…unless you are one of the few people I texted in my foodie bliss)

IMG_3806

Quinoa luff.  Brocc slaw luff.

IMG_3807IMG_3810

Food porn anyone?  I couldn’t resist…it was so purrrrty.

IMG_3808

I made the quinoa dish with quinoa, dried cranz, matchstick carrots, edamame, wheatberries, EVOO, s + p.  Not gonna lie, I was pretty impressed with this one.  Doesn’t it look like something you’d find at the hot bar?

The broccoli salad was only partially my own creation.  Half steamed brocc and half WF slaw (I don’t know what was in it, but it was tasty).

IMG_3809

After dinner I relocated to the bed and snacked on SO much dried fruit, my belly didn’t know whether I was storing up for the winter (yes, in August) or pregnant (I’m not for any family/friends reading).

IMG_3420

I was such a sloth, this is the only photo I could be bothered to take.  Now I’m off to bed because I have work again tomorrow.

That does look like it’s straight off the WF hot bar…yum

  2. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga)

The broc slaw looks yum! I havent been reading your blog super long, not sure if you have a vitamix, but I’d presume you have a food processor…girlfriend, you can make your own hummus. A can of TJ’s organic garbanzo beans is $1.09 and you can doctor it up with garlic, onions, tahini, red peppers, salt, evoo, or none of the above and you’ll have a boat load of hummus for like 1.25. However, being cheap will cost ya in time spent in the kitch. And you’re probably like yeah, I’ll just buy it 🙂 But anyway, I dig your blog!

Sigh. I wish I had a food processor! Unfortunately, me and my fiance share the tiniest apt (that is literally fit for a Disney cartoon fairy)…so even having a blender is pushing it in the kitchen appliance dept. At least there’s the wedding registry…one can dream right? I have managed to make hummus a few times in the blender, since yes, I am frugal, and it’s wayyyyy $$$$ to support my hummus habit, but it wasn’t nearly as tasty (and my blender sucks). And like you said, the convenience alone is worth spending the cash…

  4. blueeyedheart

Ummm PBJ?? And you could always go for a mini food processor… believe me, I have ZERO kitchen space for any more appliances, yet somehow I manage to fit in an obscene amount of new ones that I probably don’t even need!

I love insanely stupid books sometimes. Especially on the subway. Considering it’s kind of hard to concentrate when people are singing (hollering) praise and benedictions at the top of their lungs.

I love that slogan! It’s all over products here, mugs, posters, pillows, etc. I am trying to find the approptiate product to take back with me to the US as a momento of my time here 🙂 I think it is great for people like me (and you?) who um, sometimes are not able to keep calm.

  6. Lara (Thinspired)

Ha! I just looked it up on Amazon to see what products they have. Check this one out, might be more appropriate for me 😉

I actually stole a mini-FP from my grandparents kitchen since they never used it, but you can get one for $20 – literally – and it is SUPER small and light! That’s how I make my hummus 🙂 Just make a couple batches if you want to make a lot.

Also, I know you are a big runner – I’m giving away a SpiBelt (runners belt with pouch) on my new blog, which recently moved from blogger to http://www.ChicagoMarathonVal.com, if you are interested 🙂

  8. ksgoodeats

You know you’re a foodie when you get so excited about something you have to send pictures of it 😉 Thank you for RUBBING IT IN MY FACE!!! I kid, I kid!

Have fun saving more lives today!

  9. Graze With Me

Aha! I was wondering why Sabra was so much better! I’ve actually never had it (can’t find it near me) but the calorie difference explains it. Sad how that works huh? I do love Tribe though so maybe I should just stick with it….

Hah, great book, sometiomes you need to read a stupid one sometimes. One mindless one that I actually liked was called “Target Underwear and a Vera Wang Gown: Notes from a Single Girl’s Closet ” by Adena Halpern. Pretty good.

Have a great hummus-filled day my fellow hippie!

  10. allijag

I love dried fruit – I can’t sit down with the whole bag – because i will eat every last piece!

  11. julie

Ahh I love that slogan haha I feel like I should give that to Deej (my mom) for all those time she panics uh aka every second of the day.

We have SO many of those Sabra’s mini tubs in my fridge! I can’t even handle it! I think always damn Elise would be so much better with these.

hope you don’t have to use your slogan today at work 🙂

  12. elise

ahaha!! that’s great…i think i’ll stick with the more soothing slogan for now though…

  13. Diana (Soap & Chocolate)

I hope you have dug into your exciting new find by now! SOOO GOOOD.

I had some massaged kale last night myself, and it is so my new fave salad. The first time I made it, I wasn’t so sure, but it was actually the leftovers that converted me – almost better the next day! Though I’m sure that’s raw food blasphemy. Still, I so dig it now that I’m used to it and it’s worth the effort. I’m sure hummus would only make it more amazing! Especially in teeny tubs, haha! If you have sesame seeds, you might try those as a topping too – I enjoy them very much. 🙂

    Ciao sista!

  14. elise

really? whoa…amazon here i come!! that belt sounds perfect, ill be sure to stop by, thanks 🙂

  15. elise

sorry love! you know it’s because i heart you 🙂

i’m on my lunch break right now and the day still feels like i have an entire marathon left of my shift…wah wah wah.

  16. elise

yeah – that may or may not have happened.

  17. elise

the difference is worth it, though…seriously, get your hands on some sabra if you can because you’ll swear you’ll never go back to anything else again once your taste buds have been introduced

  18. elise

    haha…you KNOW it!!!

there was an article on the front of the metro today about lewd conduct on the subway…sad that i know precisely what they are talking about. nast!

oh, and i agree, i’d still rather read the same line of my book over and over and OVER again than make eye contact with the off-key trio of homeless “musicians”

  19. Missy Maintains

I agree, Sabra is wayy better than Tribe! I try to “forget” about those calorie stats haha. So funny about those subway comments above. I look for anything possible to keep my head down to avoid looking at the scary singers.

  20. lowandbhold

I’ve been denying the nutrional facts of Sabra for a long while. I’ve never had Tribe, but all hummusage I’ve ever had has pailed has paled in comparison to Sabra.

    I l-o-v-e the mantra!

Can’t wait til the big find is revealed!

  21. janetha

i agree 134%, sabra>tribe. and the little containers, again, are so so so cute. i love miniature things (i hope that is not what she said). woah, i am also going to pretend i didnt see the calorie comparison. okee dokee! haha glad you are not going into hibernation nor are you prego. hope your day is going well! xo

  22. angieinatlanta

    I love that mantra!

I’ve been looking for something to chant to myself at work!

  23. Gena (Choosing Raw)

Hey gorg! Love all of your week’s eats, as always, and especially the sabra. It kicks tribe’s ass.

  24. Marie

I’ve got no idea how I got here as I’m on a bit of a surf, but your food pics look amazing. Why am I now having an urge to make a quinoa salad? Keep up the lovely blog:-)

  25. elise

thanks!! im glad you stumbled your way here 🙂
